' ROAD-SGRAPER.
Specification 13f Letters Patent.
fnitcntcd.
Apalication filed March 12, 1910, Serial-No. 58.!?.
Toollwhom it may concern:
Be it known that; 1' TTfiAM'lEL llicnrmnsox, n citizen of the United States, residing at Hoover, in the county oi. Cass and Shite of Indiana, have invented new and useful In:- prmcinents in Roatl-tcrupci's, of which the following'is a specification.
This invention'rclules to road graders and scrapers and has particular reference to :in improvement in n devicc of that kind granted me by Letters Patent Number iliflli), 01am: December T, 1909.
In llimpntcnt above t'errcd to, l em-- ployed :1 pair of'divergent scraper blades, and :1 pair of bearing shoes located in aidvzince of thcoutcr sides of the blades. The function of tho shoes being to sustain the hlmi'cs in :1 variety of positions upon the road surface or to hold the vforward portions of the blades wholly uspended ulmvc the road surface. The chief disiulvnntuge of this constinction resided in the fact that owing't'o'thc uriangenient' of the shoes upon a; common shaft that when the lutt'cr' was turned both blades were moved siniultanc ously, and practice proved when the device was passing over an inclined road that the construction which operated both blades simultaneous ineli'ective-ly produced the nest rcsult'si The present invention tlierefom aims to remedy thisdefect by mounting the bearing shoes upon a pair of shafts, each operatedscraper blades diverged throughout their entire length, and practice proved that this structure would cause the device to skid or produce sidc draft during the operation of the scraping. In. order to correct this defect, I'havc flexed the forward portions of the blades inwardly and parallel with the central line of draft, so that during the operation of scraping, by virtue of these ara-llel portions, the forward ends of'the Eladcs will engage with the ground in such a manner that lateral movement of the dc vice will be positively prevented.
With these and other objects inview, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certainvdetails of construction and arrangemenlr of parts hercinafter fiully described, illustrated in tho accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the, appended claim, it being raider-stood that various clmngcrr in the form. proportion, size zunl minor details of the device may he made, Within the scopeof ihc appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the :nlvnnnigcsof the invention.
in the accompany drawings forming-a pars of the specification, in igure 1; is a plan VlQW of the grader shown in thc'patent above referred t and sisoshowingniy improved hlndes and shoes. Fig. is 21 .cllonni front elevation on the line 2-i2- of l: in; i.
,. .l 7 a nnnilnr numer of references are enithronghout.
As shown in in previous patent, the dcvice comprises a substantially triangular frame, the divergent side bars of which are ldesignated by the numeral 5. Adjacent to their forward ends thcsc side bars are bent inwardly, as shown zit 6, and are parallel with each other and are connected together by it cross piece E". The rear ends of the bars rc connected by a cross piece 8, and a similar cross piece 9- is arranged intermodinte the end cross The rear portion of the implement is supported by 2i pair of toothed Whcels 1i) and-11 journalcd upon the opposite ends of an axle 12 carried by a supportingflhar 13 and reinforced therctln'ongh by 14. The wheels are arranged at a suitable distance in the remof the cross bar 8, and 2t supportingbar 21 projects forwardly in the central line of the implement through it-shaped brackets 15 and 16, which fastened "to the cross bars 8 and Side arms of these brackets are each formed with on {d ning series of openings for the passage of fastening pins 17 which extend, through the a :icent portion of the bar 13, by means of v .iich said bar may hc udjustuhly secured lit: ditto-rent elevaticns to support the rear portion of the implement. The cross bars 7 and 9- &rs con nected by parallel longitudinal brace bars 18 and 19, and the brace bars 8 and 9 are connected by cross brace bars 20 and 21, the parts being bolted or otherwise rigidly secured together to form an exceedingly strong and durable structure. An arcuate bracket 22 is securedto and arranged rearwZardly from the rear cross projecting bar 8, and is provided with harrow teeth 23 to ike same as that; shnwn inthe aforemem $101186. patenfi wanted ma and, 'I lay nhum i -hat the runner sshqmg mu if? may be "and b tum'in 01w, tha bundles Hi 21 pair oflmzking 3G. and 211 pmject 111g inrwardiy fmm and plwtally azmmecwd By use: Of Making bums; mi? this character fine j sm'wad arms may be sqcmed 112 any desired PDSlfiOII.
