WALTER P. MOORE, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
ROAD-SMOOTI-IER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 14, 1911.
Patented Dec. 12, 1911. Serial No. 633,084.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER P. MOORE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Smoothers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to road drags or road smoothers, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which will efiicient-ly smooth or level a road, one that will be strong and rigidly constructed and one in which old wagon tires may be utilized to form the road engaging elements.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a road drag or smoother, constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the road engaging members.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals 5 and 6 designate crossed bars to which a substantially diamond shaped frame 7 preferably of tubing, is secured. The bar 6 at its forward end has a clevis 8 attached thereto to provide means for the attachment of a swingle-tree or other means for drawing the drag along the road to be smoothed.
The actual road engaging elements 9 are preferably formed of wide wagon tires and may be formed of discarded Wagon tires if desired, these tires being cut away at 10 to leave openings at the rear sides of the road engaging members, to permit the escape of any dirt that collects inside of said members. The members 9 are disposed with theirconvex closed faces toward the front of the drag, these faces causing the dirt to move in opposite directions and around the sides of said members, it being apparent that a portion of the path of movement of the front member is overlapped by the path of movement of the members in the rear thereof, whereby the road is efficiently smoothed. It will be apparent from an inspection of the drawing that a drag of this character may be very economically manufactured and will be very rigid and strong. The members 9 are secured to the frame 7 by means of fastening devices 11 which pass through the frame 7 and through L-shaped lugs 12 carried by the members 9.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, 'it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
In a device of the character described the combination with a pair of bars crossed at right angles to each other and united to a diamond shaped frame the extremities of said bars being secured to the diamond shaped frame at the corners of said frame, of a plurality of scraper elements lying beneath the said diamond shaped frame, each of said elements comprising the major portion of a circle, having their open portions disposed rearwardly, and means for securing said scraper elements to the diamond shaped frame and to said bars, said scraper elements being disposed in such manner that the rearmost of said elements overlaps the path of movement of the scraper elements in front of it.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER P. MOORE.
