Description

G. OSBORNE.
ROAD SCRAPER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 18. l9l6.
Patented July 23, 1918 INVENTOH ATTORNEY WIT ESSES GEORGE OSBORNE, 0F CUTLER, WISCONSIN.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Application filed April 18, 1916. Serial No. 91,966.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon OSBORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cutler, in the county of Juneau and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to road scrapers and the primary object of the invention is to provide a road-scraper that will obviate the small ridges and furrows which occur Where the ordinary road scraper is employed and which will contain means for adjusting an auxiliary scraper blade carried by the device whereby a smooth and even road-bed may be formed by the scraper.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a road scraper which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following descrip tion and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the road scraper.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the cutting blade in one position in full line and in another position in dotted lines.
The front scraper 1 and the rear scraper 2 are preferably formed of wood and are spaced apart in parallel relation to each other and are adapted to have their scraping edges lie on the ground in the same horizontal plane. Supporting bars 3 are provided which are bent at right angles at their ends to provide securing flanges 4: which are fastened to the scrapers by means of rivets or bolts. The spacing bars 3 are connected to the scrapers adjacent the ends thereof and are provided intermediate their ends with brackets 5. An auxiliary scraper blade 6 is arranged between the front and rear scrapers and is transversely curved and provided with a cutting edge 7. Attached to the scraper blade 6 at the rear thereof is an arcuate supporting arm 8 which is provided with a plurality of apertures 9 through which a bolt 10, carried by the bracket 5, is extended and secured to the supporting arm by the nut which is screw threadedly mounted on the end of the bolt 10. The cutting blade 6 is, by this construction, adapted to be adjusted so that the cutting edge 7 may be disposed forwardly to a greater distance and at a greater angle for more effectively operating on roads of different grades.
It has been found by experience that the ordinary scraper consisting of front and rear scrapers does not thoroughly even the road-bed inasmuch as the small ridges are left by the front scraper and passed over by the rear scraper and it is to obviate this defect that the auxiliary scraper blade 6 is provided. When the center blade strikes the ridge in the road-bed the entire weight of the device is upon the cutting edge of the scraper blade and the ridge will thereby be removed and the following or rear scraper will smooth over the ridge after it has been cut by the auxiliary scraper blade.
Any suitable device for pulling the scraper may be employed and for the purposes of illustration, 1 have shown a staple 11 secured to the front scraper to which are connected the draft chains 12 connected at their free ends by a ring 13 to which the draft animals for pulling the device are attached.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable road scraper has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes or modifications in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
I claim:
In a road scraper, the combination of front and rear scraper blades, supporting bars having securing flanges fastened to the proximate surfaces of the said scraper blades, brackets mounted upon the said supporting bars intermediate their ends, an
rality 0? equally spaced vapertures and enarm for permitting adjustment and swinggaged wlth the edges oi: thesaid supporting 111g movement of the Sitld. auxiliary blade. 1
bars and With the said bracket for pre-. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature venting longitudinal movement of the said in presence of two witnesses.
auxiliary scraper blade, and a removable GEORGE OSBORNE. fastening element carried by each bmcket XVitnesses:
and adapted for reception in any of the ALVIN J. GRAB,
said openings in the adjacent supporting i M E SOHUMANN.
we at of this patent may becbtalned for five cents each, byaddressing the Commissioner of Patents,
