INVENTOR NELS NELSON, or LA FAYETTE, OREGON.
SOD-TRIMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1912.
Application filed April 24, 1912. Serial No. 692,929.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELS NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Fayette, in the county of Yamhill and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Sod-Trimmer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to that class of implements which are employed in connection with landscape gardening and particularly for use in trimming the borders of lawns along concrete walks or the like.
Among the purposes of this invention is to provide an implement of the character indicated which will be more efficient and certain of operation than those usually employed, and that, too, with the expenditure of the minimum amount of power.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following de scription and the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention in operative position; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
In carrying the invention into practice in a preferred embodiment thereof, I provide a wheel 10 of any suitable size or construction adapted to roll upon or near the edge of the walk W adjacent to which the sod or turf is to be trimmed. A handle 11 havinga cross bar 12 is connected to the axle of the wheel by means of plates 13 and 1%, the same being connected rigidly to the handle by means of bolts 15 and 15 At 16 is indicated a cutter having a front cutting edge 16 inclined at a suitable angle to the vertical edge of the walk and adapted to trim from the sod S a substantially V- shaped slice, that portion of the sod which has a tendency to creep up along and over the edge of the walk, making the same unsightly. The cutter 16 has connected to its upper portion a pair of braces 17 which are connected at their upper ends in any of a series of adjustment holes 17 a to the plate 14 aforesaid by means of bolts 18, whereby the depth and position of the cutting edge of the cutter may be varied as may be required.
A turning member or-mold board 19 is associated with the cutter and is connected thereto at its upper portion by means of a bolt 20. The mold board is adapted to receive the trimmings from the cutter and throw them over upon the walk in the rear of the wheel 10, the bottom edge of the mold board being preferably curved to conform to the shape of the walk and to extend downward sli htly at 19 below the top surface thereo The rear part of the mold board has connected to it a brace 21 extendlng thence upwardly to the upper end of the frame member 14 and there connected through any of a series of adjustment holes 22 to the frame by means of the aforesaid bolt 15. The adjustment of the mold board is intended to accommodate operators of dliferent heights, and this adjustment may be made independently of the aforesaid adjustments of the cutter, the mold board be ing adapted to swing on the pivot 20 according to such adjustments. The brace 21 is twisted so as to cause the mold board to extend well over into the rear of the path of the wheel.
The several parts of the invention may be made of any suitable materials, according to the functions to be performed thereby, and the relative sizes and proportions thereof may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is D 1. In a sod trimmer, the combination of a frame, supporting means for the frame, a cutter disposed at an angle to the frame and adjustably connected thereto for varying its depth, a mold board pivoted at one end to the cutter and extending thence rearwardly below the frame, and means to connect the rear end of the mold board adjustably to the frame.
2. In a sod trimmer, the combination of a frame, a wheel to support the frame, a cutter at the one side of the wheel and disposed at an angle thereto, means to connect the cutter rigidly to the frame, a mold board pivotally connected at its front portion to the cutter between the cutter and the wheel and extending thence rearwardly and laterally in the rear of the wheel, and means to connect the rear end of the mold board rigidly with the frame.
3. In a sod trimmer, the combination with a frame, and a wheel supporting the same, of a cutter inclined at an angle to said wheel and having a front cutting edge, a pair of braces connected to the front and rear parts of the cutter and connecting the same rigidly and adjustably to the frame, a mold In testimony whereof I have signed my board connected to the inner face of the name to this specificatlon in the presence cutter, a brace extending from the rear end of two subscribing Witnesses.
of the mold board to the frame, and means NELS NELSON. adjustably securing said mold board brace Witnesses:
to the frame independently of the means for H. L. CONNER,
connecting the cutter to the frame. ALMA STOW.
