J. S. CURRIE.
STALK CUTTER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 21. I913.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915.
THE NORRIS PETERS 60.. FHOTOVLITHOH WASHING MN. 0, v
STALK-GUTTER.
Application filed July 21, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. Comma, citizen of the United States, residing at Ginsite, in the county of Cottle and State of Texas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Stalk-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stalk cutters employed in connection with plows and like implements, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of de vices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which may be readily applied without structural change to plows and like implements of various forms and sizes, and which may be adjusted to meet the conditions of the soil and of the stalks and like growths to be operated upon.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a conventional plow including the beam moldboard and standard with the improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the improved device with the beam in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cutter supporting beam.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device is attached to the beam of the plow in advance of the moldboard, and is adjusted vertically thereon as required.
The device is readily applicable to any of the various forms of beams manufactured, and it is not desired to limit the invention to any specific form of beam, but for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a conventional wood beam represented at 10 with the standard 11 share 12 landside 13 and moldboard 1 1, these parts being of the usual construction.
The improved device includes a supporting yoke formed with a horizontal upper portion 15 and depending terminals 16. The horizontal portion is secured beneath the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 780,235.
beam at its forward portion by eye bolts-17 clamp plate 18 and clamp nuts 19. By this means the yoke is firmly secured to the beam and may be adjusted longitudinally thereon to any required extent. At their lower ends the depending terminals 16 of the yoke are flattened and provided with a plurality of apertures to receive pivot pins 20. Mounted to swing upon the pivot pins 20 is a frame including end members 21-22 and a front member 23. At their rearward ends the end members 21-22 are mounted to swing upon the pivots 20 while the front member 23 is provided intermediate its ends with spaced ears 24- in which a standard 25 ispivotally united at 26. The standard 25 extends upwardly and bears against the beam 10 at one side and is firmly clamped thereto by a U bolt 27 a clamp plate 28 and clamp nuts 29. By this means the standard is firmly clamped to the beam and adjustable vertically thereon to correspondingly adjust the frame 212223. The frame member 21 is provided with an intermediate bearing 30 while the end member 22 is provided with a similar bearing 31.
Mounted for rotation in the bearing 30 by a stud 32 is a spider-like device comprising a hub 33 and arms 34, while a similar spider'like device is mounted for rotation by'a stud 35 in the bearin 31 and comprising a hub 36 and arms 3 Any required number of the arms 34137 may be employed, but generally four will be used as shown. Opposite pairs of the arms 34-37 are united by a cutting blade 38, the blades preferably being set slightly tangential to the studs 3235 as shown in Fig. 1. The down-turned terminals 16 and the standard 25 are so disposed that the cutting edges of the blades 38 operate relatively close to the top of the ground or slightly into the ground, and thus efiectually sever stalks and similar growth in advance of the plow.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied to beams and similar implements without structural change in the same.
The improved device may be applied to walking or riding plows or to ordinary turning or shovel plows, and will be held down to its work by the suction of the moldboard and share as they pass through the ground.
The eye-bolts 17 and the parts cooperating therewith constitute fastening means for securing the yoke to thesupport or beam 10. In this connection it is obvious that the fastening is adjustable lengthwise of the beam 10 and such adjustment may be utilized for effecting the vertical adjustment of the rear end of the supporting frame provided With the chopping mechanism. It is further noted that the yoke has its horizontal member 15 mounted in the eye of the fastening and adapted to engage the under side of the beam 10, thereby, serving as auxiliary means for securing the fastening and the yoke in the required adjusted position. The arrangement is such as to admit of lateral adjustment of the yoke so that the chopping mechanism may be positioned to the best possible advantage With reference to the track of the ploW shovel. 7
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
1. In combination, a support, a fastening extending across the support and adjustable lengthwise thereof and having an eye at1ts .loWer end, a yoke having its horizontal member fitted in the eye of the fastening and adapted to engage the support and assist in securing boththe fastening and yoke in the required adjusted position, a supporting frame provided With chopping mechanism having both pivotal and adjustable connection at one end With the upright members of the said yoke, a standard having the 0pposite end of the supporting frame pivotally connected thereto, and means adjustably connecting the standard to the said support. V
2. In combination, a support, eye-bolts at the sides of the support, a yoke having its horizontal member mounted in the eyes of the eye-bolts, and adapted to engage the support, means connecting the eye-bolts and acting in conjunction With the horizontal member of the yoke to secure the eye-bolts and yoke in the required adjusted position, a U-shaped supporting frame provided with chopping mechanism having its side members pivotally connected With the upright members of the said yoke, a standard having pivotal connection With the supporting frame at the end remote from the pivotal connection of such frame with the yoke, and means adjustably connecting the standard with the support.
3. In combination, a beam, eye-bolts arranged on opposite sides of the beam, a yoke having its horizontal member mounted in the eyes of the eye-bolts, and engaging the under side of the beam, means connecting the upper ends of the eye-bolts and acting ointly with the horizontal member of the bolt to secure the eye bolts and the yoke to the beam 1n the required adjusted position, a U-shaped supporting frame provided with chopping mechanism having its side members pivotally and adjustably connected at one end with the upright members of the yoke, a standard pivotally connected With the opposite end of the yoke, and means adjustably connecting such standard with the beam.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
