ROAD-WORKING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 31, 1917.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLARK S. FINGH and CLARENCE H. 7101;, citizens of the United States, residing at Dowagiac, county of Cass, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-\Vorking Machines, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to improvements in road working machines.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved road working machine which may be adjusted to meet the varying conditions and for use on roads of different character and to accomplish different objects or purposes.
Second, to provide an improved road working machine which may be adjusted to scrape from both sides toward the center, from the center toward both sides, or to either the right or the left side.
Third, to provide an improved road work ing machine adapted for the accomplishment of these results which is comparatively simple in structure and strong and durable.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our inven-' tion by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a plan view of our improved road working machine adjusted to scrape from both sides toward the center.
Fig. II is a plan view of our improved road working machine adjusted to scrape from the center toward both sides, the hinge locking bar being in position.
Fig. III is a detail plan view with the sec tions adjusted to scrape toward the left side.
Fig. IV is a detail longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line H of Fig. II, the carrying wheels being shown in inoperative position by full lines and in oper- 4 ative position by dotted lines.

Fig. VI is a detail transverse section on arranged transversely of the frame bars, and
parallel to each other and are secured to the frame bars by the pivots 5 so that the sections may be racked or adjusted on their pivots to vary the angles of the blade members, each section being independently adjusted so that they may be adjusted to bring the blade members into alinement and in clined toward one side, as shown in Fig. III,
or inwardly inclined, as shown in Fig. I,
or outwardly inclined, as shown in Fig. II. The sections are secured in their adjusted positions by the securing segments 6, which are mounted on the pivots 5 connecting one of the blade members'to the outer and inner frame bars and extending across the central bar which is provided with a clip 7 through which the segment swings. The segment is provided with holes 8 adapted to be brought into register with holes 9 and receive the pins 10 whereby-the sections are secured in their adjusted positions that is, with the scraper members in their adjusted relation. The sections are connected to each other by the hinge bars 11 joined by the hinges 12, the hinge bars being adjustably connected to the sections to permit their being separated, as shown in Fig. I, or brought together as shown in Fig. II. To accomplish thisthe hinge bars are provided with holes 13 while the central frame bars 2 are provided with holes 14 adapted to be brought into register with the holes 13 and receive the securing pins or bolts 15.
It should be noted that the two sections are so secured together by 'means of the hinge bars and the locking bar 16 that the forward end of the right hand section projects a slight distance in advance of the for ward end of the left hand section. The purpose of this construction is apparent from an inspection of Fig. III, in. which the scrapers are shown inclined in the same direction. By this construction, the scrapers are alined and present a smooth continuous surface for deflecting the dirt toward the left hand side. It is, of course, obvious that if the ends of the inner frame bars were even, the scrapers would be offset relative to one another and not in alinement so that the dirt would not pass readily from the right hand section to the left hand section.
\Vhen it is desired to lock the hinges the locking bar 16 is inserted through the holes 17 in the upwardly projecting legs of the inner frame bars 2 which are "formed of angle iron. The holes 17 in the angle bars serve the purpose of clips.
The scraper blade members 4: are preferably formed of angle iron disposed with one leg on the under side of the frame bars and the other projecting downwardly.
lVear bars 18 are preferably provided for the blade members, the same being formed of angle iron arranged over the blade members and secured thereto by the bolts 19.
To facilitate transportation of the machine we provide carrying wheels 20 which are mounted on the cranks 21 having axles or spindles 22 thereon for the wheels, the cranks being pivoted on the outer frame bar and provided with arms 23 connected by the links 2% so that the wheels on one side are simultaneously adjusted. The lever is provided for adjusting the wheels. This lever has a pawl 26 coacting with the segment 27 for holding the wheels in their operative and inoperative positions.
lVith the parts thus arranged, the machine may be conveniently adjusted for different classes of work and is found to be very efficient in the work on turn pikes, for which use it may be adjusted, as shown in Fig. III, and narrow roads where it may be adjusted, as shown in Fig. I, or in preparing roads to receive gravel and the like scraping from the center, for which purpose it may be adjusted as shown in Fig. II.
It will be noted that the clip members of the right hand section, which are secured to the inner frame members, are attached thereto at points to the rear of the points at which the corresponding clips on the other section are attached.
Since the scraper blades are equally and similarly spaced when the latter are inclined forwardly and to the right, as shown in Fig. III, they form a continuous scraping surface.
Our improved road working machine is simple and economical in structure and at the same time is strong and durable.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of the classdescribed, the combination of a pair of sections each comprising a plurality of longitudinal frame bars arranged parallel and a plurality of scraper blade members arranged parallel transversely of and secured to said frame bars by pivots so that the sections may be independently adjusted to vary the angles of the blade members permitting the adjustment of the blade members of the sections into alinement and inclined toward either the right or the left or into an inwardly or into an outwardly inclined relation to each other, a securing segment for each section, engaged by the pivots for one of the blade members to the outer and inner frame bars of the section and disposed across the central frame bar, said segment having a plurality of holes therein, an apertured clip on the central longitudinal bar embracing said securing segment, a removable pin arranged to engage registering holesv in said clip and the central longitudinal bar and said segment, section hinge bars hinged together and provided at their free ends with a plurality of holes, clips on the inner frame bars slidably receiving said hinge-bars, the central frame bars being provided with holes adapted to be brought into register with the holes of said hinge bars, a pin for engaging registering holes in said hinge bars, and central frame bar, and a hinge locking bar eX-' tending between and removably engaged with the inner longitudinal bars.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of sections each comprising a plurality of longitudinal frame bars arranged parallel and a plurality of scraper blade members arranged parallel transversely of and secured to said frame bars by pivots so that the sections may be independently adjusted to vary the angles of the blade members permitting the adjustment of the blade members of the sections into alinement and inclined toward either the right or the left or into an inwardly or into an outwardly inclined relation to each other, a securing segment for each section engaged by the pivots for one of the blade members to the outer and inner frame bars of the section and disposed across the central frame bar, a clip on the central longitudinal bar embracing said securing segment, a pin arranged through said clip and the central longitudinal bar and said segment, and means for connecting the sections permitting their adjustment:

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of sections each comprising a plurality of longitudinal frame bars arranged parallel and a plurality of scraper blade members arranged parallel transversely of and secured to said frame bars by pivots so that the sections may be independently adjusted to vary the angles of the blade members permitting the adjustment of the blade members of the sections into alinement and inclined toward either the right or the left or into an inwardly or into an outwardly inclined relation to each other, means for securing said sections in their adjusted positions, section hinge bars hinged together, clips on the inner frame bars slidably receiving the free ends of the hinge-bars, and means for adjustably connecting said hinge bars to said sections, and a hinge locking bar extending between and removably engaged with the inner longitudinal bars.
4. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of sections each comprising a plurality of longitudinal frame bars arranged parallel and a plurality of scraper blade members arranged parallel transversely of and secured to said frame bars by pivots so that the sections may be independently adjusted to vary the relative coacting relation of the blade membersof the sections, means for securing the sections in their adjusted positions, hinge bars adjustably connected to said sections, to permit their adjustment and to pivotally support them in relation to each other, a hinge locking bar extending between and removably engaged with the sections, and carrying wheels mounted on said sections to be adjusted to and from operative position.
5. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pair of sections each comprising a plurality of longitudinal frame bars arranged parallel and a plurality of scraper blade members arranged parallel transversely of and secured to said frame members by pivots so that the sections may be independently adjusted to vary the angles of the blade members, means for securing the frame bars and scrapers in their adjusted relation, hinge bars pivotally secured together at one end and means for adjustably securing their free ends to the combination of a pair of sections each comprising a plurality of longitudinal frame bars arranged parallel and a plurality of scraper blades arranged transversely to said framabars and parallel to each other, the scraper blades of one section being secured thereto forwardly of the scraper blades of the other section, respectively, pivots for connecting said scrapers to said frame bars, means for adjusting and securing said scrapers at various angles relative to said frame bars, means for securing said sections together in their adjusted position, means for securing the last named means to the inner bar of one of said-sections, and to the inner bar of the other section at a point to the rear of the point at which the securing means is attached to the inner bar of the first section. 7. In a structure of the class described, the combinationof a pair ofscraper sections pivotally secured together at their inner edges, a pair of wheels pivotally secured to the outer edge of each of said sections,
and means for actuating each of said pairs of wheels to a raised or lowered position independently of the other pair.
