SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,945, dated December 13, 1881.

To all whom it may concer-a Be it known that I, HENRY O. MOORE, of Tama City, in the county of Tama, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 isaperspective view of my improved scraper as arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper side of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of said device, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the swiveled clamps used for connecting the scraper to the draft-beam.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the gures.
The design of my machine is to enable roads to be easily constructed and kept in proper shape; and to this end it consists, principally, inthe means employed forconnecting the scraper to or with the draft-beams and for varying the cutting-angle of said scraper, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter speciiied.
It consists, further, in the means employed for connecting the scraper to or with the frame ofthe machine, and varying its angle with relation to the line of drait, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, further, in the combination of the scraper, connectin g mechanism, and elevating devices with the frame of the machine, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
It consists, iinally, in the means employed for preventing side draft of the scraper, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described.

Arranged transversely beneath the frame described, between the front and rear wheels, is a scraper, G, which has a length somewhat greater than the track of the machine, and longitudinallyastraightface, and transversely has a curved face, its concave side being in front.
Upon the rear side, at or near the upper edge, near the ends of the scraper Gr, is a U-shaped bar, H, which is so secured to the scraper as to allow it a swivelin g movement upon said scraper, `and at its'ends it is threaded and provided with nuts h, and said ends spanned by means of a clamp, h', the arrangement being such as to enable said bar to turn upon the crown of the bend as a bearing, so as to present the opening between its arms at any desired angle oblique to a horizontal plane. Pivoted upon the king-bolt d is a plate, I, which has two divcrging arms, t' and i', that have unequal lengths and extend rearward. Within the rear end of each arm t' and fis pivoted one end of a bar, K, which at its opposite rear end, lc, has a downward and forward curve, and fits into one of the clamps, H, where it is securely held by screwing up the nuts h, the said curved portion or end k being caused to correspond to and embrace the convex rear side of the scraper G.
The construction of the rear end of the draftbar K enables the vertical angle of the scraper G to be varied at will, to accomplish which it is only necessary that the clamps H be loosened, and said scraper turned upward or downward upon said bar until in the desired position, after which the tightening of said clamps again secures said scraper in place. The unequal lengths of the arms z' and i enable the scraper G to be set at an oblique angle with relation to the line ot' draft, while the draftbars K have equal lengths, while by the em ployment of bars of different lengths, or by providing one or both of said arms with a series of pivotal springs that have relatively different distances from the king-bolt d, any desired angle may be secured. It will be observed that in changing the angle of said scraper IOO the rear ends of said draft-bars swivel within the clamps H and adapt themselves to any change of relative position. The scraper thus attached to the frame of the machine is free at either end to move vertically in order to conform to the undulations of the ground, its connection with said frame being flexible; but in order that such vertical movement may belimited, and that, when desired, said scraper may be raised from contact with the ground, the following described means are employed, viz: Two levers, M and M, having an L shape in side elevation, are pivoted upon the inner faces of the rails A and A in such position that when their long arms are placed vertically and their short arms extend horizontally rearward the ends of said short arms will be in line with the upper edge of the scraper G. Iivoted to and extending between the rear end of the short arm of each lever M aud the upper edge of the scraper G is a rod, an, which connects said parts together, and enables the end ot' said scraper to which said lever is connected to be adjusted vertically with relation to the frame ofthe machine, to effect which result it is only necessary that the upper arm of said lever should be moved forward or rearward. A suitable stop device being provided for each lever, the latter may be locked in place, so as to hold said scraper at any point between the limits of its motion.
In order that the scraper Gmay be prevented from dropping below the lower limit of its motion, and at the same time left free to rise and pass over an obstruction, a chain, N, is secured to each of its ends, and extends upward to and is connected with a hook, O, that projects outward from the adjacent rail.
IVhen the machine is used for trimming one side of a road the outer end of the scraper requires to be lower than its inner end, and such adjustment is eifected by means of the chains N, which are lengthened or shortened as required. A third chain, I), attached at the rear outer end of the scraper G, and from thence extending to and engaging with a hook, Q., that projects from the rear axle, E, operates to prevent said scraper from being twisted by the greater pressure against its lower edge than against its upper part.
In order that side draft of the scraper may be prevented, a bar, R, is secured at one end upon the frame of the machine, and extends diagonally outward and forward in front of the rear end of said scraper, an angle-iron, S, be-
- ing attached to the side rail, A, and extending beneath said bar for its proper support at such point.
From the outer end of the bar R a chain, T, extends rearward to and is connected with the upper edge near the rear end of the scraper G, and operates to prevent side movement of the latter and to hold it rmly to its work. After the soil has been worked upon the shoulder of the road the scraper G may be adjusted to a position at or near a right angle with the line of draft, and the central part of said road worked, if desired.
Having thus` fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In combination with the scraper G, having a vertically-convex rear side, and having swiveled therein the clamps H, the draft-bars II, provided with curved rear ends, 7c, which conform to and embrace the rear side of said scraper, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. As a means for connecting the scraper G to or with the frame of the machine, the pivoted plate I, havin g diverging arms t' and i', the draftbars K, provided with curved rear ends, 7c, and the clamps H, swiveled within the convex rear side of said scraper, said parts being combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. In combination with the frame of the machine, the scraper G, the pivoted plate I c' i', the draft-bars K 7c, the lifting-levers M, the connecting-bars m, the chains N, and the hooks O, all combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In. combination with the scraper G, the bar It, projecting diagonally from the frame of the machine in front of said scraper, and the chain S, extending between the latter and the outer end of said arm, ksubstantially as and for the purpose specified.
