UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
f WILLIAM H. KREMSER, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
PLow ATTACHMENT To WAGON-GEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,975, dated May 1, 18183.
` 4 Application illeduly 24, i882. (No model.)
`To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KREMSER, of Omaha, in the county ofDouglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mechanism for Attaching Plows to Wagon-Gearing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification,
in which similar letters ot reference indicate corresponding parts in` all the gures.`
Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement, shownas applied to therearpart of a wagon-gearing. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the forwardpart of the plowbeam.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view ot one of the adjnstingslides audits guide-bars.
The object of this invention is to formsulky-- plows bylcouuecting ordinary plows with the "running-gearing of wagons.
The invention consists ina mechanism for attaching plows to wagou-geariu gs, constructed with two pairs of upright tonguedbars secured to the axle and bolster of a wagongearing by a plate placed upon the forward side of the said axle and bolster, clampingblocks placed upon the outer sides of the lower ends of the upright bars, and clamping-bolts placed above and below `the said axle and bolster.A Upon the upright bars slide blocks, to
which is hinged the bail, conuectedwith the plow-beam by clamping platesand bolts. The
, sliding blocks are connected by hinged bars with bent levers, which are provided with pawls and catch-bars, so that the plows can be readily adjusted and controlled, as will be hereinafter fullydescribed. A V
I will describe my improvement as applied to the rear part of a wagon-gearing, but the forward part of a wagon-gearing can be used if desired. a f
A represents thelwheels, B the axle, (l the au ordinary wagon-gearing.
` bolster, and D the stakes, of the rear partof i used, and which are secured at a little distance e apart to the rear @side ofthe axle B and bolster C. The upper parts'of the b ars E are secured in place by bolts F, which pass through them at the upper side of the bolster C, and through a plate,
cility.
G, placed against the forward side of the bolster C and axle B. The outer sides of the lower parts of the bars E are corrugated transversely to correspond ywith the corrugations formed in the inner sides ot' two clamping-blocks, H, one for each pair of bars E.
I are bolts which pass through the (enters ot' the clamping-blocks H and through the plate `Gr below the axle B. e Upouthe adjacent sides of thbars E ot" each pair are formed ribs or tong J, which tit into corresponding grooves K ,lformed iu the opposite sides of the sliding blocks L, so as to keep the said blocks in place as they move up aud down.
lll
To a lng formed upon the outer side of the v are hinged the hooked' ends of the bar or bail Q. The bar or bail Q is bent twice at acute angles, so that its straight middlelpart will be longer than the distance between the sliding blocksL, to allow the plow-beam R to be adjusted laterally to cnt a wider or narrower furrow, as may be desired, and also to allow the attachment to be secured to the axle and bolster nearer to or farther from their centers, as may be desired. y .e
To the upper and lower sides ot' the 'plowbeam R are secured plates S by bolts T, pass i ing across the sides of' theA plow-beam It and through lugs formed upon the end parts of the side edges of the said plates. The lugs ot' the plates `S are slotted to receive the bolts T, so
that the clamping-plates S cau be applied to wide" and `narrow V To the middle part of theupper plate, S, is bolted a cap-plate, W,`which forms therewith plow-beams with equal fai a bearing for the middle part of the bar or bail` Q. `The clamp-bearing S T W is kept in place adjustably upon the bail Q by collars V, placed e upon the said bail and secured by screws W.
To the rear arms ot' one the levers N is hin ged the forked upper end ofthe connecting-bar X, the lower end of which is secured by a bearing, Y, to the middle part of the bail Q.
With this construction, by operating the lever N placed at the vland side of the plow and provided with the connecting-bar X the plow can be raised from and lowered to the ground, the other lever, N, being` intended for leveling the plow or incliningit to one or the otherside. When the lever N is operated to raise the plow from-thc ground the plow is first turned toward the mold-board side of the plow, which causes the soil to slide oft the said mold-board, and thus allows the plow to be raised more easily.
With each of the levers N is connected a pawl, Z, sliding in .a guide-tube, ce, attached to the lower part ofthe said lever N, and connected by a rod or chain, b, with a small bent eis the drivers seat, the lower end of the standard f of which is secured to the bolster C andfaxle B by a socket or other suitable means.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to'secure byLettersPatent- 1. A mechanism for attaching plows to wagon-gearin gs, constructed substantially as herein 'shown and described, and consisting of the two pairs of tongued bars E and their fastening-plate and clamping-blocks and bolts G H F I, the sliding blocks L, connecting-bars M X, bent levers N, and the bail Q, as set forth.
2. In a. mechanism for attaching plows to wa gon-gearin gs, the combination with the axle and bars E and the sliding block L, of the bail Q, the hinged bars M X, the bent levers N, and rack-plates d, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the plow can be readily adjusted and controlled, as set forth.
WILLIAM H. KREMSER.
