SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,115, dated October 16, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, BENJAMIN F. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheeled Plows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of improvements in the lowering, raising, and adjusting apparatus for the plow and the eolter in a riding or wheeled plow having the beam permanently mounted on the axle, and in which the plow and colter are adjustable upward and downward relatively to the beam, whereby the colter is automatically and synchronously shifted with the plow; also, in the eontrivance of the hitching attachment for shifting the pitch of the same and for using it either in rigid connection with the beam or independently thereof and in freedom for vertical play at will; and it also consists of improvements in the construction calculated to improve the efficiency and at the same time to simplify the same and economize in cost, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved riding-plow with the axle and evener in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of some of the parts with the plow-stock and colter-stock in section. Fig. 3 is a section of the beam on line as w, as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; and Fig. 4 is a section of the beam on the same line, as seen looking in the reverse direction. Fig. 5 represents a modification of the draft-adjusting device.
I construct the beam in sections,comprising the front piece, a, having the bearing-box b, for coupling the beam to the axle 0, made integral with it, the rear piece, d, having the socket e, for the spindle f of the caster-wheel g, and the middle section of two plates, h, bolted to the respective sides of the said front and rear pieces and having the slidewayj (No model.)
fitted to the exterior of one of said plates, and the staysi of the slideway j between them. which stays, slideway, and plates are bolted together, and said stays are bolted to the slideway at the top, making a very simple strong, but light and inexpensive structure for the coupling of the plow to the axle and for the vertical slideway for the plow. The stock k of the plow is fitted in said slideway and secured by the cleats Z, and it is fitted with a toothed rack, m, with which the pinion n, attached to lever 0, gears to raise and lower the plow. The lever has a stop-latch, p, to hold the plow in different positions by the notched disk q, attached to the standard.
The colter-stock s is fitted to slide vertically in a mortise through the front piece, a, of the beam, and is connected at the upper end to the end of the arm t,whose other end is rigidly attached to the plow-stock at the upper end of the latter, so that the raising and lowering of the plow automatically raises and lowers the colter at the same time and in the same measures as the plow shifts, thus enabling the adjusting of both at the same time and with one set of adjusting devices, which simplifies and lessens the work of the operator, besides being better done together,and the contrivance of apparatus is simpler and cheaper than with separate adjusting devices for each.
For the hitching device I employ the yoke a, suitably coupled at the ends 1) to the axle a, each side of the beamv and tongue connections, for applying the draft, and so that the yoke may turn on the axle for shifting higher or lower, and between the axle and the front end of the draft-yoke I couple said yoke with the beam by the cross-bar w, link x, and the bolt said link having a series of holes for the bolt, enabling the yoke to be set in higher or lower pitch, as desired, for varying the angle of the drawing traces. If it be desired to work with the yoke free of con uection with the beam, the link a; may be disconnected and allowed to hang from rod 10, the bolt being replaced for use when wanted.
In the construction of the beam I arrange the side plates, h, comprising its middle sec tion, to project forward of the front piece, a, a suitable distance, to form cheeks in a simpler and cheaper arrangement for suspending the draft-yoke, as above described, than would be afforded by any special attachment to the beam or the front piece, a, for the purpose.
The draft-yoke has a series of holes, 2, for the lateral adjustment of the evener-clevis a, according as circumstances require.
In this example I have represented the colter-stock s as a flat bar fitted in a mortise through the front piece, a, of the beam, but it may be a round rod fitted in a bored hole through said piece, and, if desired, the said piece may be cast with box-extensions on the upper or lower, or both, sides of the beam, similar to those for theaxle, to form alonger slideway for the colter-stock. The arm t may also be a rod of round or other'approved form.
The axle has the usual crank, b, for adjusting the wheels to the working condition and to the condition for the level road, and is provided with the usual adjusting-lever, 0, stoplatch d, and the stop-rack e, for shifting and setting it as required.
My improvements in the colter-adj usting device are alike applicable whether a rolling or other colter be used.
The slideway for the plow-stock is fitted with friction-rollers, asindicated by the dotted circles f, so located with reference to the thrusts to which the stock is subjected by the resistance on the plow when in labor as to have the best effects in reducing the friction of the adjusting movements.
The contrivance for adjusting the pitch of the draft-yoke may be modified by a pendant, 61, of the front piece, a, suitably perforated, in lieuof the link 00 and bolt 3/, with eye-lugs b on the draft-yoke, and the rod to arranged to be inserted through said eye-lugs and the differentholes of pendant, as represented in Fig. 5.
What I c1aim,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a wheeled plow in which the plow and colter are adjustable upward and downward relatively to the beam, of the plow attached to a vertically-shifting stock,'the colter also attached to a verticallyshifting stock, and the rigid arm of the plowstock connected with the coulter-stock for automatically adjusting the colter by and with the plow-stock, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a wheeled plow, of the draftyoke mounted at its ends on the axle, the beam also mounted on the axle and having extension forward of the same, and the pendant device connecting the yoke with said forwardextension of the axle, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a wheeled plow in which the beam is mounted on the axle by a bearing-box, of a beam consisting of the fore end piece, a,-having the aforesaid axle-bearing box formed integral with it, the rear end piece having the socket for the caster-wheel stock, and the intermediate plates, h, bolted to said fore and rear end pieces, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in a wheeled plow in which the plowstock is adjustable upward and downward relative to the beam, of the beam consisting of the fore and rear end pieces and the intermediate plates bolted to them, the slideway for the plow-stock fitted to the exterior of one of the said plates, and the stays for the slideway fitted between said platesand all bolted together through the plates, stays, andslideway, and the stays secured to the slideway above the .plates, substantially as described.
