TUMBLING-BARREIi.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented July 26, 1910. i
- Application filed November-'27, 1908. Serial No. 464,550.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT M. Gnnis'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Havenand State of Connecticut, have invented or disments in Tumbling-Barrels, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of tumbling barrels which are so mounted that they may be adjusted to various positions either for the tumbling operation or for filling and emptying the same; and the invention has for its object to provide tumbling barrels, of the class referred to, with screen sections at their outer ends so that when a tumbling operation is completed the barrel maybe tilted over and rotated, While in such POsllZ-lQl'h fOI the purpose of sifting out the material in which the articles to be cleaned or polished have been tumbled, and when such sifting has been effected the cover of the barrel may he removed and the tumbled articles dumped out in a clean condition, or free of the tumbling material.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 an elevation of -a tumbling barrel embodymg one form of the invention, and Fig.2 is a sectional view of a tumbling barrel embodying another form of the, invention. Fig. 3 is an end view to show the cover and detail for mounting same, and Fig. 4 is a detail edge view ofthe cover.
Referring to'the drawings, 12 denotes a tumbhng barrel, which is of well known form,.and which is provided with a screen or foraminous section 13 consisting of somewhat heavy wire mesh mounted on armsl l bolted to the barrel 12. To the-outer end of the section 13 is a ring 15 to which and to the outer end of the imperforate barrel section 12 the wire mesh may be properlyat-tached. The ring 15 is preferably pro vlded with one or more promoting hooks 16 for engagement with the rim of the cover 17, said cover being provided at its upper edge with a pin or projection 18 which may by a spring hasp 19 riveted to one of the arms 14 of the wire mesh supporting-frame. From this construction it results that the cover 17 may be readily placed in position to close the end of the' tumbling barrel, and may be quickly and easily removed, as will be understood, said useful Improvecover being preferably provided with a han- In Fig. '2 the invention is shown as being applied .to a jacketed tumbling barrel 21 rotating in a suitable bearing on a hollow axis through which steam may be admitted for the purpose of heating the barrel, such form of tumbling barrel being thus adapted for use as a drying barrel in which articles may be dried in the tumbling material after havin been tumbled elsewhere, or in which artic les may be tumbled and steam then be admitted for the purpose of drying out the tumbling material and the tumbled articles, after the tumbling operation. In this form of the invention shown in Fig. 2 the outer wall of the barrel is extended beyond the jacketed portion thereof, said extendedouter wall 22 being provided with perforations of.
any suitable size to form a foraminous portlon or screen, and this form of the invention is also provided with a removable cover 17 preferably held in place by a spring hasp 19.
" The operation of the invention will be.
readily understood from the foregoing.
Then a tumbling barrel embodying the invention is to be used for tumbling it will be placed in the upwardly inclined position shown in Fig. 2, but when a tumbling eration is completed and it is desired to Si out the tumbling material from the work or articles tumbled therein the barrel will be tilted to the downwardly inclined position shown in Fig. 1, and will then be rotated in such position untiLthe sifting operation has been completed, when the cover may be removed and the work or articles tumbled then be dumped into any suitable box or receptacle.
Having thus described my invention. I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent: A jacketed tumbling barrel mounted on a tilting axis and having its outer wall extended beyond itsjacketed portion and provided with perforations or openingsto form a screen, sald barrel being provided with a removable cover at the outer end of said screen portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix my I signature, lIl presence of twowitnesses.
v Witnesses: L. M. Fom),
GEO. H. Bnnnn.
