In my invention I provide a novel back removably secured to the body portion of a brush and provided with means whereby the brush may be held securely without danger of injuring the fingers or hands ofthe user.`

It further consists of a back provided with a scraping device for the purpose of producinlg an efhcient and effective scrubbing utensi It further consists of other nevel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentali` ties of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective of a brush back embodying my invention. Fig. Q represents a section on line m-f-w, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a brush having a novel back secured thereto. Fig. 4f represents a section on line 'g-y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a perspective of my device in operation.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings: 1 designates the body portion of a scrubbing brush or the like, having the usual bristles 2 secured thereto. This body portion 1, as here shown, is provided with longitudinal recesses 3 in the sides thereof and also with slots 4e in the top and adjacent each end, for a purpose to be presently described.

5 designates a `novel back which I have devised for cooperation with the `body portion lof such a brush and as here shown this `back is provided with inturned sides 6 preferably curved `so asto form suitable surfaces 7, whereby the back may be `readily grasped in the hand and firmlyheld. In the present instance the sides G are provided with strucloup portions 8 forming a y1eld ing securing means adapted to engage with the recess 3 of the body portion 1. Itwill be noted that these `recesses 3 extend substantially throughout the length of the sides of the body portion 1 in order that the back 5 may be slipped on over the end, this permitting the inturned sides 6 to enter the recesses?) and properly position the yielding portions S to grip the body portion and aid in maintaining the same in position. In order to more effectually prevent the back 5 from slipping relative to the body portion 1, one end 9 of the same lis bent downwardly to form a depending strip 10, which latter fits the openings 4 in the body portion 1. As here shown I have formed this depending portion 1() about a ring member 11, whereby the utensil may be suspended when not in use.

13 designates an upwardly turned flange, preferably integral with the back 5 and here shown as of angular contour forming a scraping member which may be utilized in connection with the scrubbing operation.

In assembling thebrush and back, the latter is slipped on the body portion 1 from one end with the sides 6 engaging the recesses 3 and when the depending strip 10 comes into alinement with the slot t at one or the other end, as the case may be, the spring material 5 causes the depending strip 10 to snap into a slot 4, thereby eifectually locking the body portion 1 and the back 5 together.

It will now be apparent that I have devised a simple and effective means for holding a scrubbing brush, by means of which the fingers of the user of the article do not extend beneath the body portion 1 into engagement with the bristles, there being therefore no danger of injury to the hand by taking up splinters lfrom tlig floor or like surface.

Attention is directed to the spring action of the portions 8 when in engagement with y the recesses 3 of the body portion l of the brush, since this securing means draws the back 5 into close contact with the body portion l and thereby provides a firm holding means. Furthermore it will be noted that the ring 11 is an important feature, since besides serving as a means for supporting the device, it is also necessary as a means to draw the back into operative position on a brush and also serves to remove the depending portion 10 from one of the slots 4: when it is desired to remove the said back.

It will now be apparent that I. have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and describedI the preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described my invention, what 'Y I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

I. In a device of the character stated, a brush body portion having recesses and slots therein, a back, members on said back coacting with said recesses, and a depending member for engagement with said slots.

2. In a device of the character stated, a brush body portion having recesses in the sides thereof, a back, depending and inturned sides thereon, spring gripping members formed in each side and adapted to seat in said recesses and co-act with the walls of said recesses, and means to prevent relative movement between said back and body portion in normal position.

. 8. As a new article of manufacture, a removable back for a brush formed of a plate, depending sides thereon having inturned portions, spring gripping members formed on said inturned portions and extending upwardly toward said plate, and means on said plate adapted for engagement with a brush body to prevent relative movement between said body and said removable back.
