' Application filed Janus To. all whom it meg, concern;
Be it known that l, JOHN E. Neon, a
zen of the United States, and a resident of] Hanover, in the county; of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and 1m roved Winding Device for Laces, oi: which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention. relates towinding devices, my more particular purpose being to provide an improved type of hand-operated winder for use in connection with laces.
More specifically stated, my invention .coinprehends a hand winder adapted for windin lace upon a spool, and further compre'hen s means for readily exchanging one spool for another.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings iorinin a part of this specification, in which simi ar characters of refer ence indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. r v
Figure l is a view partlyinfront elevation'and partly broken away, showing my improved winding 'device ready for use; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the mechanism appearing in Fig; 1,]but viewed as from a point at the leit of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail showing in horizontal section the means for locking the handle relatively to the spool; and Fig. at is a section on the line ll of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow...
Mounted upon a wall 5 is a socket G.
bracket 7' is provided with a vertical portion 8 adapted to fit into the socket 6. This socket is secured against the wall by aid of screws 9. The bracket 7 is provided with arms 10,11 integral with. it and extending in opposite directions, these arms being bent upward. The 3111110 ,is provided with a fork one prong 10*"of which extends higher than the other prong" 10 a At 12 is a latch made preferably of thick sheet metal. and provided with a foot 13. A. pin 14 extends through the latch, and into the arm 10. The latch swings upon the pin 14:, so that the loot 13 may he brought up" "over the center oi the fork, as will be understood from Fig. 2. A spool l l 'is provided with conical ends 15, and extending through this spool is a shaft 16, one end of this shaft being provided with a spiral "roove 17. A
sleeve 18 is mounted upon a t ireaded shaft 19, this shaft being integral with a handle 20.; The shaft 19 is provided with an en- "larged portion 21 and" extends through a' bearing in the'upper end. of the arm 11. The enlarged portionBl serves as a limiting stop for preventing the shaft-19 fromfhaving too great play relatively to thefarm, .11. A handle 22 is mounted upon thecranlg20 for the purpose of turning the same. At 1}) is a pin carried by the sleeve 18 and extending radially shaft 16. r
The operation of m device is as'follows: To remove the spoo -14 the latch 12 is swun sidewise upon the pin 14 as a center. The oot 13- of the latch thus clears the ad jacent endof' the'spool; The spoolcarrying with it the shaftlfi is now raised upwardly at the left according to Fig. 1. The handle 22 meanwhile being turqgd slightly, the pin 19: follows the spiral ove 17 and the shaft 16 is thus taken y out; The sleeve 18 remains tightly fitted upon the threaded shaft 19. To insert another spool, the shaft 16 is first, threaded through the spool and the end of the shaft is brought into such pointo the spiral groove 17 of the as v sition that the pin 1'9 follows thegroove 17 22 is rotated. The tape is thus wound around the spool and as the rotation continues, thespool is radually filled. The bracket 7 is lrgl'etachab e from the socket 6that is to say,
Y bodi y upward the downturned portion of this bracket is socket 6.
My invention is of peculiar value in relationto cabinets used for holding spools of laces, as it is desirable. to wind the laces upon the spoolsbefore they are inserted in the cabinet.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A. winding device for laces, comprising a socket, a bracket provided with a ortion for extending into said socket, and urther grasping the bracket 7 and raising it' readily withdrawn from the] provided with a horizontal portion and with thereof, and'a shaft'provided with a 10- from said horizontal portion, a latch mounted upon one of said arms and provided with a foot for engaging a spool, a shaft journaled upon the other of said arms and adaptedto be turned, a crank for rotatin said last-mentioned shaft, a sleeve mounte upon said last-mentioned shaft, a pin carried by said sleeve and extending internally oove for receiving said vpm, said shaft being of proper formitoiextend through a spool.
'- 1 2;, In-a Winding device for laces, the 00mloination 0f an'harm, a shaft journaled relatively to the same, a crank for turning said shaft, a sleeve mounted upon said shaft, a 15 pin carriedhy said sleeve and extending mternally thereof, and another shaft-provided with a." pirallydisposed groove for receivin 1 said p1n.. In tes imony wli nameto this specification in the presence of twofsubseribin' witnesses: f
