I 'a citizen of the 'United States,
'which I will now FREDERICK H. MOORE, OF MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOILET-PAPER FIXTURE.'
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
- Application led October?, 1914. Serial No. 865,459.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. MOORE, and a resident of Melrose, in the county of-Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new -and useful Improvements in Toilet- Paper Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for supporting a rolled web of toilet paper which is/transversely weakened at intervals and for dispensing paper 4from said web in lengths determined by the lines of weakness in the paper, the web being broken by an outward pull on its leading end when a predetermined vlength has been withdrawn from the roll.
The invention has for its object ,to pro-- vide a simple and effective device for thisv purpose, and it consists in the improvements proceedto describe and claim. f
Of the accompanying'drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 represents a plan view of a fixture embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents an end view ofthe same; Fig. 3-represents a plan view 4of the base, one of its spindle-supporting arms, the spindle, and the drum; Fig. 4 represents a view of the'other spindle-supporting arm removed from the base; Fig. 5 represents a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2;l Fig. 6 represents a view of the innerside of a portion of one of the spindle-supporting arms; Fig. 7 represents a section on line 7 7 of Fig. 5. l
The same reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all theviews.
4In the drawings, 12 represents a base adapted to be secured to a suitable support, which may be either horizontal or ver' tical, preferably the latter. One end of the base has an' outwardly projecting arm 13 lrigidly secured to the base, j
14 represents a spindle engaged at one end with the arm 13 and held thereby against rotation, the spindle'proj ecting'k over the base 12 and being preferably detachably connect ed with the arm 13. As here shown, the spindle is provided with a transve pin 14a, the ends of'which project into sockets 15 at opposite sides' of an orifice 13 formed in the arm 13 to receive one end of the spindle 14.- 16 represents a cylindrical drum adapted to rotate orf Vthe spindle 14 and having end pieces or heads 17 in which are orifices formed to fit loosely on the spindle. The drum 16 is adapted to engage a roll 19 formed by Winding a'web of toilet paper on a cylindrical core 20, the core being of relatively thick paper or paper board, Vand the drum being formed to'. closely fit the interior of the core. The engagement of the drum with the roll should be such that the roll cannot slip or turn independently on the drum. I prefer to provide the drum with an outwardly projecting tooth or projection 21 adapted to enter a slot cut for its reception in the core 20, as indicated by Figs. 5 and 7, said slot and tooth constituting coupling members whereby the drum is rotated when a pull is exerted on the leading end of the web.
22 represents a helical spring, one end 23 of which is secured to the spindle 14 by being inserted in an orifice tin the spindle, while the other end 24 is secured to the drum by being inserted in an orifice in one of'the heads 17.
26 represents an arm having hinge members 26 connected by a pintle 27 with a hinge member 12. on the base 12, said arm having a recess 28 adapted to receive one endA of the spindle 14. Said spindle end is provided with a vspring latch 29 and the arm 26` is provided with a keeper 30 adapted to engage said-latch when the arm is swung to the position shown by Fig. 5. When the arm is displaced, the drum and spindle are exposed at one end of the device so that a roll may be moved endwise into engagement with the drum, and a core 30 from which the paper has .been removed may be Withdrawn-from the drum.
The arrangement of the spring 23 is .such that when an outward pull is exerted on the leading end 19a of the web the resultingv sol rotation of the roll and of the drum engaged therewith Will compress the spring and gradually increase its tension. The spring is therefore caused to offer a gradually increasing resistance to the unwinding of the paper from the roll, and this resistance is so proportioned to the spacing of the .transverse weakenedlinesA 19b of the paper that the leading end portion of the web will'be breken away along one of said weakened lines Whensaid line passes from the periphery `of fthe roll. Provision is therefore made, for preventing the detachment of more than a predetermined length ofthe web by a pull exerted at any one closely 'against the internal surface ofthe drum 16. The rotationof the drum caused by a pullon the web contracts the spring while it is being put under increased tension. When the spring reacts its convolutions expand and act as a brake to arrest the backward rotation of the drum by contact with its internal surface, so that the drum is ar rested in a predetermined position, and liability of bending or breaking the spring, particularly at its ends, which are attached to the drum and spindle, is avoided.
The hinged arm 26 is securely conned by the engagement of the keeper 30 with the latch 29, said parts constituting interlocking members which are arranged to be covered and rendered inaccessible by a roll 19 in place on the drum.- To permit the manipulation of thelatch 29 and the displace-v ment of the arm26, it is necessary to tear away a portion of the core-20.- This can be done only after practically" the entire roll of paper'is removed from the core, hence provision is made for preventing the theft of any substantial part of the roll. The length of the drum is considerably less than that of the core of the rolled web and the space between the arms 13 and 26, when the latter is in its operative position'. The latch 29 projects from one end of the drum, as shown by Fig. ,5, so that when the core is torn away the latch is exposed between the drum and the hinged arm 26, and maybe conveniently displaced to release said arm.-
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. A fixture for supporting a transversely weakened rolled web of paper, comprising' a fixed s indle, a drum adapted to engage the rolle by breakage. of the web at one of its lines A web and rotatable therewith by -a pull on the leading end of the web, and
of weakness is caused after a predetermined length has been withdrawn from the roll, the spring being adapted to rotate the drum backwardly after each breakage of the web,
'a xed spindle, a drum adapted to engage the rolled web and rotatable therewith by a pull on the leading end vof the web, and a helical spring engaged at one end with the spindle and at the other end with the drum, and having its convolutions normally in contact with the inner surface ofthe drum,
said spring being contracted out of contact with the drum by a forward rotation of the drum caused by a pull on the web, until breakage fof the webvoccurs, and then reacting to rotate the drum backwardly,I and at the same time expanding to cause its convolutions to act as a brake and arrest the backward rotation of the drum in a predetermined position.
3. A toilet paper fixture comprising a base, a fixed arm at one end of the base, a
non-rotating spindle lattached to said arm,
a roll-engaging drum rotatable onthe spindle, a spring engaged at oneiend'with the spindle and at the other end with the drum, and adapted to yieldingly oppose forward rotation' of the drum, an armV hinged to the opposite end of the base, and provided with a keeper, the drum being shorter than the spindle andthe space betweenthe said arms when the `hinged arm is in its operative position, so that a portion of the spindle is exposed between one endy of the drum and the hinged arm, land a latch attached to the' Aspindle and extending along the exposed portionl thereof to engagesaid keeper, the exposed portion of the spindle and the latch being arranged to be covered by a rolled web of paper on the drum.
testimony whereof I have affixed my slgnature, 1n presence of two witnesses.
l FREDERICK H. MOORE. Witnesses: C. F. BROWN, P. W. PEzzETTI.
