Be it known that I, DELCIE A. CLAYTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chatfleld, in the county of Fillmore, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for covering chimneys during the season when chimneys are not used, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efiiciency and vices of this character.

lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved device applied, Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the clamping devices cletached.

Much damage has heretofore resulted from the entrance of rain in chimneys during the summer time when no fires are lighted, and to protect the chimney and the walls in the vicinity of the chimney is the object of the present invention, which 0011 sists in general of a simply constructed sheet metal covering adapted to be located Over the top of the chimney and securely clamped thereto, and the construction of this cover and the means whereby it is clamped in position constitutes the present invention.

The improved device may be adapted to chimneys of various sizes and of various proportions, but for the purpose of illustration is shown applied to a conventional chimney, represented as a whole at 10.

The improved device comprises two end members 1112 and formed with inwardly directed flanges 1314. The end members 1112 are formed with their lower portions adapted to bear against the ends of the chimney and with the flanges bearing against the sides of the chimney at the ends thereof, and converging at the upper portions in conical form.

end members is the top member 15 of the improved device, which is in roof-like shape with its lower edges depending over the sides of the chimney and corresponding to and attached to the flanges 13-14 by rivets or other suitable fastening means 16-17. If preferred the fastening means may be solder or other like securing means, and it is not desired therefore to limit the invention to any specific device for securing the flanges to the upper portion.

The improved device thus far described forms an eflicient covering for the chimney, and will be made to fit the chimney closely and rest upon the upper rim thereof, as shown. Secured by rivets or other suitable fastening means 18 to the end member 11 is a clamp bar 19 having laterally directed ends 20 21 which extend over the ends of the chimney, and are provided with clamp screws 2223 which serve to tightly lock the cover member to the chimney at one end.

Secured by rivets or other suitable fastening means 24 to the end member 12 is a similar bar 25 having inturned ends 26-27 which bear over the sides of the chimney and are provided with clamp screws 2829 which operate to firmly clamp the cover member at the other end to the chimney.

The improved device is constructed wholly of metal, preferably of galvanized sheet metal and galvanized strap metal of sufficient strength to withstand the strains to which it will be subjected.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and when placed in position efl'ectually protects the chimney from rain during the season of the year when no fires are lighted.

The improved device may be readily attached and detached by simply tightening or loosening the clamp screws, as will be obvious.

The inner ends of the various clamp screws are preferably provided with relatively large bearing washers 30 to increase the bearing surface between the screws and the cover member.

What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising end members with the sides converging ancl provided with inwardly directed converging flanges, an upper member with the sides converging downwardly and outwardly and conforming to and connected upon the flanges of the end members,

clamp bars connected to the end members and formed with laterally directed terminals bearing over the adjacent portions of the upper member, and clamp screws operating through said inwardly directed terminals.

A device of the class described comprising end members and an upper member connected at its ends to the end members, clamp bars connected to the end members and formed with laterally directed terminals bearing over the adjacent portions of the upper member, and clamp screws operating through said inwardly directed terminals.

3. A device of the class described comprising end members having upwardly and inwardly converging upper portions and with inwardly directed flanges, an upper member with the upper portion diverging downwardly and outwardly and conforming to and connected upon the flanges, clamp bars connected to said end members and formed with laterally directed terminals bearing over the adjacent portions of the upper member, and clamp screws operating through said inwardly directed terminals.
