FEED-BAG.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN F. HAMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Bags, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in feed bags, the object of the invention being to provide a feed bag composed of canvas or other flexible material securely held between clamping rings, and which may be removed from the rings as desired.

A further object is to provide an improved feed bag with an internal ring of flexible material, located near the upper end of the bag to prevent the animal from drawing feed out of the bag by the movement of his head.

A further object is to provide a bag of this character with a cover also of flexible material, which may be secured in closed position by snap buttons or other suitable devices, so that the bag may be effectively used as a package or receptacle for the feed, and be stored away in the vehicle to be ready for use when desired. 7

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a. view in vertical section. Fig. 2, is a top plan view. Fig. 3, is an enlarged fragmentary view in section, illustrating my improved mechanism for expanding the inner clamping ring. Fig. 4, is a broken sectional plan view illustrating the ring spreadlng mechanism. Fig. 5, is a view of the inner clamping ring, and Fig. 6, is a view of the clamping lever.

1, represents my improved feed bag proper, which is preferably composed of canvas or other suitable material, and shaped as shown most clearly in Fig. 1, that is, the bag is circular in horizontal section and has a gradual reduction of diameter from its upper to its lower end, so that the side walls incline inwardly from their upper to their lower ends, so that the feed in the bag always gravitates to the center in convenient reach to the animal. secured by lines of stitching 2, forming a smooth, double, thick, upper edge 3, as illustrated.

To hold my improved bag in circular form, and afford an attachment for supporting means for the bag, although none are shown, I provide two clamping rings 4, and 5. These rings 4, and 5, are 'of different diameters, and preferably curved in cross section as illustrated. The outer ring 5, is a solid ring, but the inner ring 4, is a split ring, and a link 6, is mounted to slide on a button or rivet 7, secured to one member of the ring 4, and engaging, at one end, against a shoulder or tongue 8, integral with the other end of the split ring, and when moved by a cam lever 9, the ring may be spread or permitted to contract. This cam lever 9, is provided with an arm or finger hold 10, and when in the position shown in Fig. 3, the link has been moved longitudinally to spread the split ring, and securely clamp bag 1, between the rings 4, and 5. If the lever is swung back, the elasticity of ring 4, will contract the ring and permit the release of the bag or the removal of the ring. As above stated, these rings serve for the attachment of any suitable form of bag supporting means, and enable the bag to be removed and replaced as desired.

A ring of flexible material 11, is secured within the bag near its upper end by means of a line of stitching 11, and this ring forms an internal annular flange which prevents the feed from being tossed up the sides of the bag and out, or in other words it operates to check waste, and compel it to fall back to the bottom of the bag.

12, represents a cover which is of circular form and adapted. to fit over ring 11, and this cover 12, and the ring 11, are provided with cooperating members 13, and 14, constituting snap buttons to secure the cover in closed position. One portion of the cover, however, is permanently fixed by a line of stitching 15, so that the cover forms a permanent part of the bag.

Vith my improved feed bag, when a team starts out in the morning, the proper quantity of feed for the mid-day meal may be deposited in the bag, and the cover 12, secured by its snap buttons in closed position, the bag can then be placed in the vehicle and when desired may be removed, the cover thrown back and the bag placed in position for feeding.
