ALBERT D. CARDINET, OF FBUITVALE, CALI ASSIGNMENTS, TO CABDINET FOUNTAI CALIFORNIA.
FORNIA, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE N BRUSH COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF FOUNTAIN-BRUSH.
Application filed March 13, 1909, Serial No. 483,303.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. CARDINET, citizen of the United States, residing at Fruitvale, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain- Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fountain brushes especially adapted for painting, and the principal object of the same is to provide a simple and the supply of liquid to the brush so that there will be no waste and also so that the liquid will not be caused to flow in too great quantities for an even spreading over the surface to be painted.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will, of course, bereadily understood that the essential features thereof are susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and which is shown in the accompanying ings wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the improved fountain brush, the brush cap thereof being removed. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is side elevation, partly in section, of the brush cap.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates the body of the fountain brush which is preferably in the form of an elongated tube, one end of which is thickened and interiorly threaded as indicated at 2 and provided with a flat annular edge forming a seat for a gasket 3. A plug cap has its body 4-. exteriorly threaded for engagement with the threads of the end of the tube, the threads of said body being flattened or notched at one side as indicated at 5 to form an air duct which extends the full length of one side of said threads and communicates with the interior of the tube as shown in Fig. 2. The upper portion of the threaded body of the plug cap is provided with an annular flange seat or recess the outer edges of which depend on the outer edge of the gasket, as indicated at 6, so that when the plug cap is screwed to position on the tube 1, said gasket will be entirely surrounded. The other end of the tube or body 5 has a concaved bottom 7, said bottom bedraw- Specifieation of Letters lE'atent.

ing preferably integral with the body and being thickened and terminating in an integral tube extension 8 which alines with a central opening 9 formed through the bottom of the tube or body 1 and which communicates with the center of the concaved portion thereof.
The plug cap may be of metal or other convenient material and is provided with an elongated valve stem or rod 10 which projects through the tube or body 1 and has a pointed end which acts as a valve when forced into the central opening 9 of the bottom of the tube or body 1. Said stem may be shrunk or otherwise secured to the plug cap.
A tube or sleeve 11 surrounds the tubular extension 8 of the bottom of the body 1 and is secured in place thereon by means of an outturned annular end flange 12 which abuts against the lower surface of said bottom, and has glued or otherwise fastened thereon the bristles 13 forming the brush. Said bristles are held close to their tube by means of the tapering casing (14) and at its enlarged end is provided with internal threads 15 which engage with external threads formed upon the lower portion of the bottom 7. The threaded portion of the brush sleeve 11 may be externally milled or roughened as indicated at 16 to facilitate its re moval from its brush-holding position.
T o fill the body of the brush with liquid, the plug cap is unscrewed which withdraws its stem from engagement with the opening formed through the bottom of the body, and the liquid may be poured in, the outflow of the liquid being limited by means of the closely compacted form of the bristles. When the desired quantity of liquid has been put into the body, the same is sealed by screwing the plug cap into position, which causes its rod to enter and seal the central opening or outlet formed through the bottom. When the brush is to be used, the necessary air supply may be obtained by loosening the plug cap so as to relieve the binding engagement of the same with the gasket 3.
The brush sleeve 14: is exteriorly threaded as indicated at 17 for engagement with the internal threads 18 of one end of a brush cap 19, so that the brush may be inclosed by said cap when not in use.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the invention is a simple one and that through the described sealing plug cap and its stem, the flow of the liquid from the body may be readily controlled, so that there Will be no Waste of the same.
WVhat I claim as my invention is A fountain brush, consisting of an elongated tube With a bottom end and tubular extension integral with the tube, said bottom and tubular extensions having a central passage Way a sleeve on said tubular extension secured to the bottom of the tube, bristles secured to said sleeve, a detachable tapering casing secured at its upper end to the bottom of the tube,
and holding the bristles together at its lower end, a detachable cap at the upper end of the tube adjustable thereon to control the admission of air to the tube, and a valve stem connected to the cap at one end and at its other end controlling the opening in the bottom of the tube.
In testimony whereof I, hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT D. CARDINET.
