APPLICATION FILED APB..7,1910.
Patented July 19, 1910.
INVENTOR UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN KUKURUDA, OF SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
TICK.
Application filed April 7, 1910. Serial No. 553,918.
Specification of Letters I'atent.
Patented July 19, 1910.
erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to picks and particularly to that type of pick used by miners, quarrymen and similar laborers that re uire the points of the pick to be sha ened 0m time to time, thus necessitating t e removal of the pick head from the handle thereof.
The objects of m invention are to provide positive and re iable means for detachably holding a pick head upon the end of a handle, and to accomplish this result by a fastening device that 1s simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, and highly eflicient for safety retaining a pick upon a handle. These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing :-Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a pick constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the upper end of a pick handle, Fig. 4: is a perspective view of a detached clamping sleeve, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detached wedge, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of another detached wedge.
In the accompanying drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes a pick handle of a suitable length having the upper end thereof slitted or slotted, as at 2 and 3, the slot 3 being arranged at right angles to the slot 2 and approximately one-half the depth thereof.
t denotes an oval clamping sleeve having oppositely disposed slits or slots 5 extending body 6.
,the pick from the upper end of the sleeve to within proximity of the lower end thereof, said sleeve being of a diameter to fitupon the upper end of the handle 1 and the slit or slot whereby the sides of the sleeve can be forced outwardly for clamping purposes.
6 denotes the body of a pic head having a vertical oval opening 7 adapted to receive the oval sleeve 4, said body having oppositely disposed pick points 8.
'After the sleeve 41 is mounted upon the upper end of the handle 1 and the pick head placed upon said sleeve, a longitudinal wedge 9 is driven into the slit or slot 2 to spread the upper end of the handle 1 and the sleeve 1 and cause said sleeve to bind against the walls of the opening 7 of the The wedge 9 is provided with a slit or slot 10 adapted to provide clearance for a transverse wedge 11 adapted to be driven into the slit or slot 3 of the handle 1 and further spread or split the upper'ends of said handle 1, thus equally spreading or expanding the sleeve 4 and causing sai sleeve to firmly clamp the pick head.
The handle 1 is made of wood and the sleeve 4, wedges 9 and 11 and pick head are made of metal.
Having now described myinvention what I claim as new, is I The combination with a pick handle having one end thereof provided with a pair of intersecting slits and a pick head adapted to be clamped upon the slitted end of the handle, of a sleeve having a split end mounted upon the slitted end of the handle and adapted to be expanded to clamp the pick head with the handle, a longitudinallyextending slitted wedge mounted in one of the slits of the handle for expanding-said handle laterally to clamp the sleeve with head, and a transversely-extending wedge mounted in the other of said slits and in the slit of the slitted wedge for further expanding the slitted handle longitudinally to assist in clamping the sleeve,
and pick head to the handle.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN KUKURUDA.
