Application filed March 2, 1909. Serial No. 480,892.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonun H. FAnMnio, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence- Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a clamp for wire fences, and more particularly to a clamp for securely fastening cross .wires or strands together at their crossing points.
The object of this invention is the production of a wire clamp for fences, which is simple in construction, efficient in operation and consist of a colnparatively small num'- ber of parts.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means for facilitating the securing of cross wires vtogether at their crossing points.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a fence, showing my improved Wire clamp for fences applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an end view of one of the clamp devices; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal scction of the clamp; Fig. 4 is Aan elevation of another embodiment of my invention; and, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of said modification.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 designates a vertical strand or wire and 2 a longitudinally extending strand and these strands are securely lfastened at their junction points by means of a clamp-device 8. The clamp-device 3 comprises, preferably, a hollow body portion 4, which is provided with a transversely extendin aperture 5, through which is adapted to be positioned, or passed, the vertical strand 1. The body portion 4 is also provided with a longitudinally extending slot 6 in which is adapted to Iit the longitudinally extending wire 2, and said slot extends far enough into the body portion so as to allow the transverse, or longltudinally extending strand 2 to bind against, or engage, the vertical strand 1. The slotted end of the body portion 4 is screw-threaded as at 7, and upon this screw-threaded end is adapted to be threaded a nut 8, which nut when threaded upon said end will bind the ldevice constructed in accordance with the .present invention the cross wires can be firmly held in engagement with each other, and held thereon in a set position by means of the clamping action of the nut upon the longitudinally extending strand. Although the vertical strand 1 is shown passing through the transversely extending aperture 5 and the longitudinal strand 2 extending through the longitudinal slots 6, the position of said strands can be reversed and the longitudinally extending strand can be passed through the transversely extending aperture and the verticalstrand can be passed through the longitudinally extending slot, as the position of the wires is immaterial for the clamping action of the same will take place without regard to special arrangement of said wires.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modification of my invention, which shows a clamp provided with a solid body portion 4,
through which passes a transversely extending aperture 5a. Extending from one end and intersecting with said transversely extending aperture is a longitudinallyI extending slot- Gt7 similar tothe slot illustrated in Fi 3 of the preferred embodiment. The en of the clamp, which is provided with a longitudinally extending slot tapers and threads are formed upon said tapering portions, as at 7a, and it will be obvious that a binding or clamping action will be exerted by having said ends tapering and the sides will be more easily drawn together by having said end tapering.
What I claim is:
1. As an article ofmanufacture, a wire clam for fences, comprising a body portion provided with a transversely extending aperture, one end of said body portion screwthreaded, and provided with a longitudinally extending slot intersecting said transverse aperture, said aperture and said slot being adapted to receive cross wires, and a nut adapted to be threaded upon said t-hreaded-end for drawing the sides of said clamp toward one another and clamping said wires together. y
2. As an article of manufacture, a wire `clamp for fences, comprising a slotted body portion, said body portion provided with a transversely extending aperture near the center thereof, said body portion rovided with a threaded tapering end rovi ed with a slot formed in said tlireade end and intersect` ingzsaid transverse aperture said apertured threaded end constituting jaws, said aper-j ture adapted to receive a vertical strand, said slot adapted to receive a longitudinal strand, and a nut screw-threaded upon said end and adapted to draw the jaws toward one another, and clamp said Ver-tical strand in en gagement with said longitudinal strand.
