WIRE-CABLE CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 6, 1910.
."atented Jan. 24., 1911.
serial No. 565,355.
to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in wire cable clamps, the object of my invention being to construct a simple, inexpensive device which can be readily clamped on to or removed from a wire cable for connecting devices to such cable, and which, when applied to the cable, will not kink or injure the same when strain is applied to the cable.
My device is especially useful in connecting the cable to heavy loads.
For the above purposes my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention applied to the end of a cable; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal mid section of Fig. 2; Fig. t is an enlarged, cross section taken on the line l1 1 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing: 1 indicates the main casing of the clamp which is preferably cast out of malleable iron. yThe said casing is provided with parallel walls or flanges 2 and, projecting laterally from said walls or flanges 2, are the side flanges 3.
4 indicates the space or opening between `the walls or flanges 2 which extends longitudinally throughout the casing and is closed at its bottom by a .Wall 5.
The flanges or Walls 2 terminate in an enlarged portion 6.
The clamp may be constructed of various sizes, that is to say for use on various diameters of wire cable, and in such cases it is only necessary to have the opening or space between the Walls or flanges 2 of sufficient width to accommodate the required diameter of cable.
The top edges of the flanges or walls 2 are `provided with recesses 7 and with openings in which a removable bolt or pin 8 is located.
9 indicates a filler block which is positioned between the flanges or walls 2 in the space or opening l, the lower edge of which is positioned away from the 'all 5 to accommodate the insertion or passage of a wire cable such as 1() between :its lower edge and the wall The said filler block t) is provided with an enlarged rounded end 1l corresponding in shape with the enlarged portion (3 ol" the flanges or walls "2. r1`he filler block 9 is provided throughout on its bottom and top edges and enlarged portion 11 with a semicircular groove 12, the groove in the cned. casing 1 between the walls or fianges 2 by means of rivets 13.
Formed in the enlarged portion t3 of the flanges or walls 2 and through the enlarged portion 11 of the filler block 9 is an opening in which opening a bolt 111 is located for the purpose of securing a clevis 15 to the clamp.
The flanges are provided with openings 1G in which are located the screw threaded ends of the clips 17, said clips 17, when drawn, will be seated in the recesses 7 as illustrated in Figs. 1 2, 3 and 5.
In applying my clamp to the end of a cable I proceed gei'ierally as follows: The free end of the cable is threaded through the opening beneath the filler block and passed around the enlarged portion il l. of the same, disposed on the corrugated or roughened top edge being corrugated or rough- The filler block t) 1s secured 1n the.
face of the liller block,A passed beneath the pin S and then folded upon itself beneath` the clips 17. rl`he clips 17 are then tightened clamping the overlapping portion of the cable on to the portion of the same lying directly beneath it. The clips 17, or more specifically speaking, the under sides of the bows thereof are corrugated or roughened.
From this construction and operation it will be seen that the terminal portion of the cable is clamped and held between two roughened or corrugated surfaces and that the cable is clamped tightly between the enlarged portion 11 of the filler block and the pin 8, and when strain is applied to the cable it will be taken up practically before it reaches the abrupt bend of the cable over the pin 8, in other words, the greater part of the strain will be taken up or transmitted to the enlarged portion 11 of the filler block.
It will thus be seen that my clamp can be easily and quickly applied and removed from a cable and will not injure the cable and thus increase the lite of the cable.
I claim:
l. A clamp7 comprising a casing7 a filler block located in the casing7 an opening between the lower edge of the filler block and bottom wall of the casing, a bolt positioned in the casing above the ller block and a series of screwthreaded clips mounted in said casing.
2. A clamp, comprising a casing7 a liller block provided with an enlarged rounded end disposed in said casing, the lower edge of which is spaced apart from the bottom wall of said casing, a bolt located in the casing and spaced apart from the top edge of the filler block, a section of cable einbracing the filler block and said bolt and a series of clips mounted in the casing, for securing the cable over a portion only of the margin of the iller block.
3. A cla1np comprising a casing having laterally projecting flanges and. an enlarged end, a filler block having an enlarged end, the said vfiller block being located in said casing, a bolt located in the casing, a section of cable embracing the filler block and said bolt, and screw threaded clips located in said casing, for securing the cable over a portion only of the margin of the filler block.
4l. A clamp, comprising a casing having laterally projecting ilanges and-an enlarged end, a ller block having an enlarged end, the said filler block being located in said casing, a bolt located in the casing, screw threaded clips embracing the casing and having their ends secured in said flanges, a section of cable embracing the filler block and said bolt and secured by said clips over a portion only of the iller block, and a clevis secured to the casing.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specication, in presence of subscribing witnesses.
JAMES J. PIPER.
