Description

A H. NEWPHER.
WINDOW FRAME. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 27, 1909.
Patented July 19, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT onrron ALFRED H. NEWPHER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE ADAMS & WESTLAKE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
WINDOW-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1910,
Application filed September 2'7. 1909. Serial No. 519,700.
To all whom it mayconccrn. I
Be it known that I, ALFRED H. Nnwrm-zn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in \Vindow-Frames, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates more especially to window frames made of metal and in which the stile plates are adjustable toward or away from the sash for the purpose of more easily securing a proper fit of the sash, and especially to provide t'or adjustment when the frame is not accurately made.
The invention consists in a structure such as is hereinafter described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail elevation of the window and its frame, the side members of the latter being shown partly in section; Fig-2 is a perspective of the stile-carrying bracket members used in connection with the jamb; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
A lower window Sash is shown at 10 and an upper sash at 11. The jamb members 12 of the frame are formed of channel bars; the web of the bar constituting the outer face of the jamband its side flanges 13, H, standing inwardly toward the sash. The stile-plate 15. carrying stops ,as 16, IT, 18, are secured to the cross bars 19 of a plurality of U-shaped brackets, the side armsQO, 21, of which bear against the inner faces of the side flanges 12-3. '14: ot" the jamb members. and
. are. secured thereto by means of screw bolts 2L. 1'3, setting through elongated slots in one of the attached members, as shown, these slots being located in the arms of the brackets. The stiles are secured to the brackets by means of screws, as 24. In order to adjust the stile plates toward or away from the sash, the nuts 25, 26, carried by the screw bolts 22, 23, are first loosened and after the plate has been brought to the proper position are again set up tight.
Any-suitable means may be employed for locking the, nuts 25, 26. For this purpose so there is shown a screw 2?, setting through a suitable aperture '28, in the bracket member 19, and bearing upon one face of the nut to prevent its displacement.
When the frame is slightly out of true, the two jambs being out ot'parallel, the stileplates are brought into parallel relation by adjusting either the lower bracket of one janib or upper bracket of the other jamb, or both, as may be required.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a window frame, in combination, a jamb having instanding flanges, a plurality of U-shaped bracket members having their side arms between and bearing against the -jamb flanges bolts securing such arms to the flanges and setting through elongated openings in one of such parts, and a stile plate carried by the bracket. members.
2. In a window frame, in combination, a jamb U-shaped in cross-section, bracketsv bearing against the inner face of an outstanding arm of the ainh, and secured there to by a bolt passing through elongated slots in one of the mei'nbers, and. a stileplate J5 cured to the brackets.
