Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrn GALLAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Odon, in the county of Daviess and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roll-Screen Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to apparatus for holding rolls of wire screening or cloth, or rolls of heavy wrapping paper, or other kinds of webbing in stores or factories, and permit the screen or webbing to be conveniently unrolled and divided into portions either for use or for sale, the invention having reference particularly to apparatus whereby a roll of the above-mentioned class of material may be supported rotatably and prevented from accidentally unwinding after each portion is severed therefrom.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved holder for roll goods of the above-mentioned character that may be cheaply produced and therefore be adapted for general use not only in large establishments, but in relatively small stores or factories; a further object being to provide a roll screen holder that will be adapted to be operated conveniently for preventing the goods from unrolling when unbound and placed in position for retailing the goods from the roll, as may be required.

With the above-mentioned and other ob jects in view the invention consists in a roll screen holder comprising a pair of brackets provided with spring pressed followers for engaging the roll of goods to prevent unwinding thereof, and a shaft for rotatively supporting the roll; and the invention consists further in the novel parts, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter particularly described and then pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of the improved roll goods holder as arranged for use and supporting a roll of webbing or wire screen which is partially shown in horizontal section; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the holder or specifically a side elevation of one of the brackets thereof with the follower retracted and latched; Fig. 3, a fragmentary sectional elevation on the plane of the line A A in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a sectional elevation 011 the line B B in Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a fragmentary section on the plane of the line C C in Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a sectional elevation on the line D D in Fig. 1; and Fig. 7, a fragmentary top plan in which a modified follower is shown.

Similar reference characters in the difierent figures of the drawings indicate corresponding elements or features of construction referred to herein.

In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a suitable vertical supporting base which may be a board to be supplied by the user of the apparatus, or it may comprise a post or a shelf conveniently found in a store whereby the more essential parts of the improvement are connected together operatively and supported, the essential parts comprising two brackets comprising arms 2 and 2 having supporting feet 3, 3, which when in position for use are placed against the base 1 and secured thereto by screws 4, 4c, or similar devices, the arms extending horizontally, one arm having a circular shaft-bearing 5 in its end portion and the other arm having a slotted shaft-bearing 6 in its end portion to receive a shaft 7 that the user passes through the plugs 8 and 8, On which the roll of screen or webbing 9 is wound by the manufacturer and so shipped. The arms of the brackets have horizontal slots therein forming guideways 10 and 10, one in each arm, and the slots have enlargements 11, 11, at the inner ends thereof. A pair of similar followers 12, 12, are provided that have each a guide-part 13 thereon, the guide parts being arranged slidingly in the guideways of the arms, and the guide-parts have heads 14;, 1a, thereon, one on each, the heads being in engagement with the opposite sides of the arms 2, 2, from those which are engaged by the followers. Each follower is of substantially the same thickness horizontally as the dimensions of the guideways vertically, the guide part 13 fitting closely in its guideway, and the follower is adapted to be inserted flatwise in the guideway and then moved to the enlargement at the end thereof and turned to vertical position, after which the guide-part thereof may be returned into the guideway, as will be readily understood. The heads 14, 14, serve the double purpose of retaining the followers in the arms and serving as hand holds or lugs for retracting the followers.

Preferably the followers have axles 15, 15, on their free ends on which rollers 16, 16, are mounted to bear against the rolled screen and avoid rubbing paint therefrom, or when a roll of paper is mounted in the holder the rollers may be omitted, as illustrated in Fig. 7 The followers are further guided by means of guide tubes 17, 17 suitably secured thereto and guide rods 18, 18, secured to the feet 8, 3, of the brackets, the rods extending into the tubes, and coil springs 19, 19, are placed on the tubes and seated against the followers and the feet of the brackets, so that the followers are normally spring pressed against the roll of material and prevent it from accidentally turning, and particularly prevent a loose end 9 of the material from unwinding after severing portions of the goods from the web.

In order to enable one to conveniently place a roll of goods in the brackets or remove the remnant therefrom a pair of hookshaped latches 20, 20, are mounted on the outer sides of the arms 2, 2, by means of pivots 21, 21, the latches being adapted to lean back against the base 1 when not in use and to engage the heads 14, I l, when the followers are retracted and hold them away from the roll.

It will be understood from the foregoing that the brackets may be set up in convenient places by the merchant or user thereof and may be placed at suitable distances apart -to accommodate the desired length of roll, and obviously a number of holders will be found convenient to accommodate different sizes of rolls. The user may also supply the shaft 7 which may be cut off from bar iron to the desired length and should be of proper diameter to enter the opening in the roll or in the wooden plugs that may be found therein.

In practical use the roll is always conveniently in position as in Figs. 1 and 2 with the loose end thereof hanging down at the rear, and it will be clear that the roll may be readily rotated on its shaft by hand, so as to draw out the required amount of material which may be quickly severed from the roll, and the loose end will remain in convenient position for the next cutting off operation with the loose end held by the followers, so that the goods are always held tightly in original condition on the roll.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. A roll-screen holder including a bracket having a guideway therein, there being an enlargement of the guideway at one end thereof, a follower insertible fiatwise in the guideway and having a guide-part thereon fitted slidingly in the guideway and r0- tatable in the enlargement, and a spring mounted on the bracket and forcing the guide-part away from the enlargement.

2. A roll-screen holder including a bracket comprising an arm and a supporting foot on one end of the arm, there being a shaft-bearing in the opposite end portion of the arm, a follower mounted movably on the arm between the foot and the shaft-bearing and having a roller thereon, and a spring mounted on the bracket and normally pressing the follower toward the shaft-bearing.

3. A roll-screen holder including a bracket comprising an arm and a supporting foot on one end of the arm, there bein a shaft-bearing in the arm and also a guideway between the foot and the shaft-bearing, a follower movable in the guideway and having a lug thereon, a spring mounted on the foot and seated against the follower and forcing the follower toward the shaft-bearing, a guide for the spring, and a hook pivoted on one side of the arm approximately between the foot and the guideway and movable to engage the follower when retracted at the farther side thereof from the foot.

4. A roll-screen holder comprising a base, a pair of brackets secured to the base and having slots therein, a shaft supported on the brackets, guide-members rigid on the brackets, a pair of followers mounted movably in the slots opposite the shaft and having guide-members thereon uided by the rigid guide-members, the followers having retracting lugs thereon, springs encircling the guide-members and mounted on the brackets and seated against the followers, and a pair of latches mounted on the brack ets adjacently to the base and movable into engagement with the opposite sides of the followers.

5. A roll-screen holder including a bracket comprising an arm and a supporting foot, the arm having a shaft-bearing therein, a stationary guide member secured to the foot and extending opposite the arm, a follower adjacent to the arm between the foot and the shaft-bearing, guide-member secured to the follower and movably mounted on the stationary guide member, and a spring encircling the guide members and seated against the foot and the follower to force the follower toward the shaft-bearing.
