WILLIAM F. ARMSTRONG, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-EIGHTI-I TO BLISS A. MCNALLY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
PRINTING DEVICE.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM F. Amr STRONG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,-
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a printing device, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device lthan can be easily attached to a paper roll holder for printing upon the paper as it is unwound and withdrawn from the holder.
Another object of this invention is to provide a printing device that can be advan tageously used by grocers and similar merchants for placing advertisements upon wrapping paper or bags.
A stillfurther object of this invention is to provide a rotary printing device wherein provision is made for automatically inking the type roll.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are obtained by a printing device that will be hereinafter described in detail and then claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of the printing device as connected to a paper roll holder. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the printing device. Fig. 4 is a horizontal view of a portion of same. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of an inking roll partly broken away. Fig. 6 is an end view of a hand printing device partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 7 is an enlarged elevation of a portion of the same. Fig. 8 is a cross sectional View of a portion of the hand device.
In the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a base plate for standards 2 and revolubly mounted in said standard is a roll of wrapping paper 3.
4 denotes a spring held pivoted shearing plate 4 supported by the standards 2, said plate corresponding in length with the roll of paper 8 and normally held in engagement with said roll whereby as paper is unwound it can be easily torn or severed from the roll. These parts are common to paper Specification of Letters Patent.

upon the paper as it is withdrawn from the roll.
5 denotes hinged members supporting a longitudinal bar 6, said hinged members being suitably connected to the bar 6 and to the plate 4. Attached to the bar 6 is a longitudinal casing 7 having the end walls 8 thereof longitudinally slotted, as at 9 for spring pressed bearing blocks 10. The blocks 10 are adapted to engage the spindles 11 of a tubular inking roll 12, said roll being perforated as at 13, and covered with a pad 14. One of the spindles 11 is provided with a bore 15 normally closed by a threaded plug 16, said plug being removed when it is desired to till the inking roll 12.
Revolubly mounted between the end walls 8 of the casing 7 is a type roll 17 having the periphery thereof provided with type 18, and the type is supplied with ink by theroll 12 normally bearing against the type. The means for holding the roll 12 against the type roll 17 are located in the grooves 9, and such means as springs 19 are preferably employed.
'Ihe end walls 8 are provided with resilient guards 20 normally resting uponthe roll of paper 3, these guards supporting the type roll 17 out of engagement with the roll 3, except when a piece of paper is being re moved from the roll 3. The operation of removing a piece of paper has a tendency to raise the plate 4 and cause the type roll 17 to engage the roll of paper 3. This 1s due to the fact that the guards 20 normally support the type roll 17 just clear of the paper roll, and as the free end of the paper forming the roll is lifted to cut the same, the knife 4 is lifted therewith, and being connected to the bar 6, pressure sufficient to overcome the tension of the guards 20 is exerted against the casing 7, so as to cause the type roll to be moved into engagement with the paper, and as the knife 4 is held elevated by the paper during the time a strip of paper is being withdrawn and cut pli', the type roll will revolve and make 1mprints on the paper during such revolution.
The hand device shown in Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive is similarly constructed with the exception that the longitudinal bar 6 is provided with a handle 2l, and a spiral spring 22 is located at one end of the type roll 17 for returning the type roll to its normal position after it has been used, thereby preventing an advertisement from being printed backward.
My invention is applicable to various types of paper holders and can be used for numerous purposes, and While in the drawings there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is to be un derstood that the structural elements thereof can be varied and changed as to the shape, and manner of assemblage Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having new described my invention What I claim as new, is:
l. 1n a printing device for paper rolls, the combination With a frame for the paper roll, and a paper shearing knife pivotally supported from the frame and normally engaging the paper roll, of a printing device comprising` a casing overlying the paper roll, a bar secured to said casing at its lower end and hinged to said paper shearing knife, a type roll journaled in said casing t the forward end thereof, an inking roller also journaled in the casing and engaging the type roll, and resilient guards carried by the casing and engaging the paper' roll for normally supporting the type roll free from engagement With the paper roll.
2. In a printing device for a paper roll, the combination with a frame for the paper roll, and a paper shearing knife pivot-ally supported from the frame and normally engaging the paper roll, of a printing device comprising a casing overlying the paper roll and hinged to the paper shearing knife, and a type roller carried by said casing and held normally free from contact with the paper roll and adapted to engage the paper roll when the shearing knife is lifted out of engagement With the paper roll.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of tivo Witnesses.
WILLIAM F. ARMSTRONG.
