HORATIO B. WEAVER, 0F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
.Latas Patent No. 96,369, dated Novanta 2, 15869.
- IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may con'cem.. I 'Bc it `known that .1, Hoekrro B. WEAVER, of. Hartford, in the county of Hartford, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks; and I'V do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to thc-accompanying drawings, andto the letters of reference-marked thereon; The nature of my invention consists jin` providing, within a lock-case, a disk, connected'to a concentric ring by means of a circular connectiominarked F in the drawing, said disk and ring being so arranged as to admit of a partial revolution, under certain conditions ol their attachments, and providing, with-in or between the said connected disk and ring, anylnumber of concentric and eccentric rings 4or tumblers that it' may be desirable to employ. I
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. Figure l isa plan of a lock-case, showing the part-s of the lock by dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a sectionof the lock on line 1 2, fig. 3. Figure 3 is a view of the lock with the cover-plate removed, and shows the parts in their locked position.
Figures 4 and 5 are two views of the disk and connected ring and circular tumblers, marked 4l, 2, 3, 4.
A is the case of the lock. B is the bolt of the lock.
C is one of the fences in the lock. D is another of the fences .in the lock, and both fences lare attached toithe lock-case.A
E isa circular projection from the ring a', as shown in igs. 1, 3, 4, and 5.
F is a connection between the disk a and -ring a. la is the disk, andv a is the ring, between which are the tumblers 1,2, 3, 4. One of the tumblers is a con,- centric ring, while vall of the others are eccentric, let the number bev more or less. f I
b isa stud. around which are wire springs ff. One
end of each spring rests against the inner side of the lock-case, and the other'end of each -spring against one ofthe tumblers, 1, 2, 3, 4. i l
The oliioe or purpose of these springs is to cause the notches which are in theedges ofthe tumblersto engage the end of the fence D, as it ishy'mcans of this fence D that the bolt B is held in the'locked po? i sition, through the mediumcf the circular projection E, the disk a, the ring a', connection F, the tumblers 1, 2, 3, 4, and the springs ff, around the stud b.
C is a pin, inserted in the disk a, and its purpose is thrown too far on to the fence D,'by the springs f f,-
which rest against thetumblers opposite to the fence D.
d is a stem to receive the barrel of the, key, in the operation of locking and unlocking the bolt B, and is inserted in the centre of disk a.
e is a pin that passes through the ring a. and through the tumblers 1, 2, 3, 4, and also into the disk a. The tumblers are pivoted upon pin e, and are held by it in place.
By referring to the drawing, itwill beseen that'a recess in the lock ofthe lock-case' is provided for the disk a to turn in, as'upon a pivot.
The disk a, and ring a', together with the tumblers 1, 2, 3, 4, occupy all the space between the projecting partof the holt B and the lock of the lock-case, and are then kept in place in the recess referred to between the ends of the fences C and D. At the same time, by the use ofthe proper key, theythe disk, ring, and tumblersare free to make the partial revoV` lution in the locking and unlocking the bolt B.
The operation is as follows:
Insert the key through the cover-plate of the lock,
on to the stem d. Turn to the iight, until the key strikes the pin C, before referred to. At this point, all of the tumblers, 1, 2, 3, 4, will be lifted from their contact with the fence D, but not far enough to eugage the fence C. AConsequently,'the diskA a, connection E, ring a', and projectiony E, being all connectedA together, are free to, and can he partially rotated in the recess above referred to .in the back of the lockcase. As the boltB is provided 'with a receptacle for the projection E,.the continuous turning of the key I will carry back the bolt B. By the use of an improperv key, the tumblers would not he properly placed in relation to the fences C and D; consequently the bolt B could not be drawn.
I claim as my invention, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of disk a, ring a', connection F,
with the circular notched tumblers 1, 2, 3, 4, and thelfences'C and D, the whole'operating together in the manner and for the purpose specified.
' ,j VHORATIO WEAVER.
