To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ITHLEL SAN- ronn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Printing Devices, of which-the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand-printing devices.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of the nature stated embodying such characteristics that it may be readily and expeditiously adjusted to hold type interchangeably for the printing of different names, addresses, or names and addresses, cards, or other matter.
Another object of the invention resides I in the provision of a hand-printing device whose type carrying and adjusting parts may be quickly assembled and positively hold the type in position for accurate operation in the printing process of letter heads and other stationery.
With the above and other objects in view, the presentinvention consists in the co1nbination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device in its open position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line (Z-C6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device opened. Fig. 1 is an end view of the device closed. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the closed device.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a type receiving section embodying a bottom a, a side I) and ends 0, each end having an inwardly tapering perforation 2 for a purpose presently explained. Cooperating with the section 1 is a cover section 3 having a false cover a spaced from the cover proper as shown;
Projecting from theside Z) of the section 1 is an arm 5 whose free end is adapted to fit between the ears 6 of the arm 7 projecting from the cover section 3. These ears 6 of the arm 7 are arranged at a right angle to the latter and are slotted, as at 8 to slide upon the pin 9 passed therethrough and also through the free end of the arm 5, whereby the sections 1 and 3 are hingedly connected together, and whereby, by virtue of the slotted ears 6, the cover section 8 may be adjusted with respect to the section 1, so that one or more rows of type 10 may be held between the sections, the sections having the projecting portions 11 and 12, respectively, which form finger pieces or handles for the convenience of the operator in using the device. Thus when the cover section 3 is thrown over the type receiving section 1, the sections may be held firmly together by the operator who grasps the thumb or finger pieces 11 and 12, as should now be well understood.
In the use of the device the types 10 are placed within the receiving section 1 with their printing ends projecting slightly therefrom, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. When the desired type has been disposed in the type receiving section a follower 13 is disposed at each end of the bank of type, and in order to hold these followers in tight engagement with the bank of type at the ends of the latter, I provide suitable clamping devices 14:, each clamping device consisting of a resilient head 15 and outwardly diverging arms 16 whose outer faces are serrated, as at 17, to engage the inner edges of the inwardly tapering perforations 2 in the ends of the type receiving section. Each clamping device 14. is the same in construction and is preferably formed of a single piece of material, as shown, so that the head 15 and arms 16 are resilient, and whereby, by forcing the arms 16 together, the clamping devices may be pulled outwardly through the perforations 2 when desired.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when the followers 13 are placed in proper position, that the clamping devices may be pushed inwardly into engagement therewith and that they may be thus operated without forcing the arms 16 together, although to disengage the heads 15 of the clamping devices from the followers, it is necessary to force the arms 16 together so that they may clear the inner edge of the openings 2. Thus the line of type may be removed, and obviously while but a single row of type is shown, two or more rows may be employed, the alining adjustment of the section 3 with the section 1 permitting of the use of the device with one or more superposed lines of type. I thus provide a suitable frame for the reception of the type, the frame being composed of sections adjustable with relation to each other so that one or more rows of type may be operatively held by the frame. I also provide an exceedingly simple, durable, inexpensive and efficient device, whose parts are so constructed that in its entirety or with certain parts eliminated, it may be used as a printers galley, that is, the type receiving section is capable of this last mentioned function. It will therefore be understood that I do not limit myself to one field of use.
What is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, a type receiving section having tapering openings, followers disposed in the section upon opposite sides of the type, a cover section cooperating with the aforesaid section, and clamping elements passed through said openings and engaging the followers to hold the latter in tight engagement with the type said clamping elements depending on said openings to hold them in operative relation with said followers.
2. In a device of the character described,
a type receiving section having tapering openings, followers disposed in the section upon opposite sides of the type, a cover section cooperating with the aforesaid section, and clamping elements passed through said openings and engaging the followers to hold the latter in tight engagement with the type, the clamping devices having two surfaces for interlocking engagement with the said openings.
3. In a device of the character described, a type receiving section having tapering openings, followers disposed in the section upon opposite sides of the type, a cover section cooperating with the aforesaid section, and clamping elements passed through said openings and engaging the followers to hold the latter in tight engagement with the type, each clamping device including a head and a pair of normally diverging arms.
4:. In a device of the character described, a type receiving section having tapering openings, followers disposed in the section upon opposite sides of the type, a cover section cooperating with the aforesaid section, and clamping elements passed through said openings and engaging the followers to hold the latter in tight engagement with the type, each clamping device including a resilient head and a pair of yieldable arms whose outer edges are serrated for interlocking engagement with the said openings.
5. In a device of the character described, a frame having inwardly tapering openings at each end, followers disposed in the frame upon opposite sides of the type, and clamping elements passed through said openings and engaging the followers to force the latter into tight engagement with the type said clamping elements depending on said openings to hold them in operative relation with said followers.
6. In a device of the character described, a frame having an inwardly tapering opening at each end, followers disposed in the frame upon opposite sides of the type, and spring clamping elements passed through said openings and engaging the followers to force the latter into tight engagement with the type.
7. In a device of the character described, a frame including a bottom and ends, each end having an inwardly tapering opening, and a spring clamping element having slidable movement through each opening of each end and also having yieldable engagement with the corresponding opening to hold the type in operative position.
8. In a device of the character described, a frame including a bottom and ends each end having an opening, and clamping devices passed through said openings to hold the type in operative position, said devices having yieldable engagement with said openings to prevent accidental dislodgment,
thereof.
9. In a device of the character described, a type receiving section including a bottom, a side and ends, the ends having inwardly tapering openings therein and said side having a projection, a cover section having a false cover spaced therefrom and also having a pair of arms terminating in a pair of slotted ears, a pin passed through said slotted ears and first mentioned arm whereby the sections may be pivoted together, followers in the type receiving section, clamping devices passed through the openings in the ends of the type receiving section to hold the type in operative position, and finger pieces carried by the sections.
10. In a device of the character described, a type receiving section including a bottom, a side and ends, the ends having inwardly tapering openings therein and said side having a projection, a cover section having a false cover spaced therefrom and also having a pair of arms terminating in a pair of slotted cars, a pin passed through said slotted ears and first mentioned arm whereby the sections may be pivoted together, followers in the type receiving section, clamping devices passed through the openings in the ends of the type receiving section to hold the type in operative position, and finger pieces carried by the sections, each clamping device including a resilient head and yieldable arms.
11. In a device of'the character described, a type receiving section including a bottom, a side and ends, the ends having in wardly tapering openings therein and said side having a projection, a cover section having a false cover spaced therefrom and also having a pair of arms terminating in a pair of slotted ears, a pin passed through said slotted ears and first mentioned arm whereby the sections may be pivoted together, followers in the type receiving section, clamping devices passed through the openings in the ends of the type receiving section to hold the type in operative position, and finger pieces carried by the sections, each clamping device including a resilient head and yieldable arms, the arms being serrated for cooperation with the inner edges of said openings to prevent accidental dislodgment of the clamping devices.
12. In a device of the character described, a type receiving section having tapering openings, followers disposed in the section upon opposite sides of the type, a cover section pivotally connected to the aforesaid section and cooperating with the latter, and clamping elements passed through said openings and engaging the followers to hold the latter in tight engagement with the type.
13. In a device of the character described, a type receiving section having openings, followers disposed in the section upon opposite sides of the type, a cover section pivotally and slidably connected to the aforesaid section and cooperating with the latter, and clamping elements passed through said openings and engaging the followers to hold the latter in tight engagement with the type.
14. In a device of the character described, a type receiving section, followers disposed in the section upon opposite sides of the type, a cover section having a false cover and cooperating with the aforesaid section, and clamping elements engaging the followers to hold the latter in tight engagement with the type.
15. a type receiving section, followers disposed in the section upon opposite sides of the type, a cover section pivotally and slidably connected to the aforesaid section, and ad justable clamping means engaging the followers to hold the latter in tight engagement with the type.
16. In a device of the character described, a type receiving section, followers disposed in the section upon opposite sides of the type, a cover section provided with a false cover and adjustably connected to the aforesaid section so that the false cover may be disposed in different positions in the first mentioned section, and clamping means engaging the followers to hold the latter in tight engagement with the type.
17. In a device of the character described, a frame having inwardly tapering openings, at each end, and a clamping element passed through each opening to hold the type in operative position, said clamping elements each including a toothed portion adapted to engage the corresponding opening to prevent accidental outward movement of the clamping element.
