RALPH A. SMITH; OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
DARNIN Gr DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 1, 1909.
Patented July 5, 1910. Serial No. 530,878.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, RALPH A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Darning Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to darning devices.
The object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly'simple, inexpensive, durable, efiicient and conveniently handled device adapted to clamp and hold a stocking heel or other part of the stocking or other fabric in position for darning.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure l is a perspective view of the darning device in position to receive a stocking or other fabric to be held for darning purposes. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the parts clamped into cooperative relation with a heel of a stocking clamped in position for darning.
eferring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a ring provided with an arm 2, the character 3 indicating a second ring provided with an arm 4, the arms 2 and 4 being hingedly connected at their outer ends by a coil 5. The ring 3 has a cup 6 .secured thereto, which is adapted to fit within the ring 1 for the purpose of clamping the heel portion 7 or any other part of a stocking 8 or other fabric on the cup and hold it effectively for darning purposes, there being a slide element 9 adapted to slide upon the arms 2 and 4 to firmly clamp the fabric on the cup 6. The slide element 9 is provided with oppositely "disposed notches or recesses 10 adapted to receive the arms 2 and 4 when it is desired to force the arms together and firmly clamp the fabric between the ring 1 and the cup 6, as shown in Fig. 2. The cup is preferably substantially semi-spherical in shape, so that in its projection through the ring 1 it has a wedge-like clamping action upon the fabric and so as to amply expose the fabric to be darned to permit the darner to have a sufficient part of the fabric to work upon.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. A darning device comprising a piece of material coiled intermediate its ends to provide yieldable arms, each arm terminating at its outer end in a ring, a semi-spherical member fitted rigidly in one of said rings for projection into the other of said rings, and a slide mounted on said arms to draw their outer ends together and force the semispherical member into the last mentioned ring, said slide being adapted to be turned on the arms and having indentations to engage the arms to lock the semi-spherical member in the last mentioned ring.
2. A darning device comprising yieldable arms, one arm having a ring at its outer end, a semi spherical member secured to the outer end of the other arm for projection into said ring, and a slide mounted on said arms to draw their outer ends together and force the semi-spherical member into said ring, said slide being adapted to be turned on the arms and having indentations to engage the arms to lock the semi-spherical member in said ring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RALPH A. SMITH. Witnesses J. A. JONES, W. C. OSBORNE.
