SMOKING-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1910.
Application filed October 8, 1909. Serial No. 521,673.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. E'r'rnu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gisne, in the county of Wayne, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in smoking pipes, and has for its object to provide a simply constructed device of this character which may be readily cleansed when required.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The improved pipe comprises in general three portions, an inner portion including the bowl and stem of glass or similar compound or material, an outer casing preferably in two separable parts, and a mouthpiece engaging over the stem. The glass portion comprises a body 10 from which the stem portion 11 extends from one side near the bottom and with a downward projection 12, the latter having a central opening communicating with the bowl. The outer sup- 13-1& and with a two-part extension 15-16 extending over the portion of the stem 11 which is located next to the bowl. The members 13-14. may be of any suitable material such as wood, pressed fiber, or the like, and are provided -with downwardly projecting portions 17-18 bearing over the downward projection 12 of the bowl. The outer casing members thus conform to the bowl and its projection and likewise to the stem 11, as shown.
Fitting over the stem portion 11 is a combined mouth-piece and stem protecting member 19 which bears at one end against and exact description of the inventhe portions 15-46 of the casing, and through the opposite end of which the stem 11 projects for a short distance as shown at 20. The upper portions of the casing members 13-14= are externally threaded to receive an internally threaded band 21 while the adjacent ends of the members 15-16 and the mouth-piece are externally threaded to receive a coupling band 22. The lower portions of the extension 17-18 of the casing members lid-14: are likewise externally threaded to receive a cap 23 which thus forms a closure to the bowl, as shown. The parts are thus firmly bound together by the bands 2122 and the cap 23, and the whole device comprises a simply constructed pipe which may be employed in the ordinary manner, the tobacco being inserted into the bowl 10, and the smoke drawn through the stem 11. The projecting portion 12 forms a receptacle below the line of the orifice of the stem 11 for the precipitation of the nicotin and other similar matter, so that this deleterious matter is not drawn into the mouth of the smoker. The accumulation of the nicotin and the like can be readily removed by simply detaching the cap 23. The bands 22 and 23 may be readily removed to enable the parts to be separated and the bowl 10 and its stem 11 cleansed when required. The members 1011 being of glass or the like can be readily cleansed when required, and the pipe kept pure and sweet.
The improved device may be constructed in any suitable size or form without material structural changes.
If required a non-conducting filling, such as asbestos or the like, may be employed between the casing members 13-1a and their stem portions 1516 and the bowl 10 and its stem 11, as represented at 24.
What is claimed is 1. A smoking pipe comprising an inner structure including a bowl and a stem, a separable outer casing bearing over sai bowl, a mouthpiece extending over said stem, the free end of said stem being extended beyond the free end of the mouthpiece, members together, and detachable means for coupling the casing members to the mouthpiece.
2. A smoking pipe comprising an inner detachable means coupling the casing muse structure including a bowl and 2t stem, said a cap Connected to said Casing members and bowl extending below the stem andprovlded ormlng a closure to said bowl 0r1fice.-
