Be it known that I, CHARLES M. MoLEoD, a subject of the King of England, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois; haveV inventedn certain new and useful Improvements in a Sample-Holder, of which the following is a description.

My invention belongs to that class of devices known as sample holders, packages or the like, designed to hold sample pieces of fabric. The holder is particularly designed for the use of salesmen in carrying and displaying their lines of fabrics or the like and has among its objects the production of a simple, convenient, efficient and durable holder of the kind described for use whereever found applicable.

To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure l is a plan view of the holder opened, with several samples arranged therein, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same showing in the dotted lines a part folded back upon itself.

Referring to the drawings in which my preferred form of device is shown, 1 represents the holder cover, particularly that part of the holder which may be termed the back thereof, which is extended at one end, as at 2, and arranged to fold back upon itself to form a cover. The cover 2 is preferably of sufficient length to reach to the opposite end of the back when folded, as indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 2. If desired, the opposite end of the back member l may also be extended slightly, as at 3, and folded back to form a flap. The holder comprising the back, cover and flap may be made of any suitable material, preferably of a se1niiiexi` ble material as distinguished from a limp or stiff material.

The samples 7, 8, 9, etc., are preferably arranged each with one end positioned at the free end of the holder and secured thereto. As shown, they are positioned between the flap 3 and the back and may be secured therein in any suitable manner, as shown, by rivets or staples 4. The samples are preferably of such a length as not to extend beyond the free end of the cover 2 Specification of Letters Patent.

when the holder is opened, and if desired, may be of varying lengths or stepped, as is clearly shown in the drawings.

If desired, the cover part 2 may be notched proximate to the free end, for ex"- ample as at 5, which facilitates the opening of the holder to display the samples. Then so notched the salesman or one displaying the samples may open the holder, using one hand in doing so by grasping the holder back at the notch and letting the cover and samples drop to open the folder. It is of course obvious that if the cover did not extend entirely to t-he free end of the back the notch in the cover would be unnecessary.

When the holder is constructed and the samples arranged substantially as shown and described, the samples do not extend beyond the free end of the cover when the holder is open or closed, so that the goods are in all 7 cases protected by the holder. In opening the holder the end 3 may be held and the extended part dropped, thereby easily and quickly as well as fully displaying the contained samples, and in closing or folding the cover the samples may be folded with the cover, that is, in opening or closing the samples follow the cover and it is not necessary to unfold or fold the samples separately, either as a whole or individually. As a matter of fact the one displaying the samples need not touch the same in opening or closing the folder or displaying the samples. In displaying the goods a number of sample holders may be opened and arranged as desired, for example, side by side, the construction being such that they will remain open so that all the samples may be displaved at the same time without any necessity of holding or weighting down the covers.

Having thus described my invention it is obvious that various immaterial modications may be made in the form, arrangement or construction shown or described without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction, ar rangement or combination of parts, or uses shown, described or mentioned.

lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A sample holder of the kind described comprising a single piece body member of benda-ble material, said body member having at its upper edge a return flap portion 1 adapted to lie flat upon the body portion to receive samples between the flap portion and the body portion, said body portion being bent substantially midway of its ends upon itself to form a cover member, and the elower upon the body portion will assume a position over the return flap at'the upper edge 10 of the body portion, whereby said return iap lmay be engagedby the finger at lthe revcessed portion of the cover member to release the cover member and therebyexpose then-samples. y n
