' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIUS H. ScHLerLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Me-' tallic Case for Coflins, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in metallic cases for cofiins which are so constructed as to be air and water tight, and may be quickly and readily sealed or opened, and conveniently handle The objects of my improvement are, to provide a strong and substantial case in which may be placed a coflin containing a body for shipment; to provide a case which will withstand the Wear and tear of shipment, and will be proof against water or fire; to aiford means for readily and quickly sealing the said case in such way as to comply with the health laws orregulations of health boards or other authorities; and to provide a case which may be used not only in the shipment of a body, but may also be used, if desired, in the burial of the same. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the metallic case showing the cover in place. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal cross-section of one of the ends of the case taken on a plane cutting one of the clamps, and with an'unimportant portion broken away. Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal cross-section of one of the ends of the case, with an unimportant portion broken away.

Throughout the several views similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts.

The sides 1 and the ends 2 are made from sheet metal with panels stamped or pressed in the same as shown at 3 and 4: respectively. The bottom 5 is made from sheet metal and is preferably plain or without panels. The lower edges of the sides 1 and also their end edges, and the lower edges and side edges of the end pieces 2, and also the side and end edges-of the bottom 5 are bent outwardly,-

In the assembling of the parts comprising the case the outwardly bent edges along each seam are disposed in parallel relation to each other and a strip of composition packing 8 Y is placed between them. A separate corner guard 9 having integral spaced members is then placed upon the outwardly bent seam edges, the said edges with the packing between them being inoluded' between the spaced members of said corner guard, and holes are then drilled through said guard, edges and packing at appropriate intervals. Fastening devices, as rivets 10, are then employed to draw the guard and edges into close engagement forming a tight joint between the outwardly bent edges and the packing 8, producing a neat and smooth finish upon the outside of the case and greatly strengthening and bracin it.

It will be understood that the four bottom seams and the four corner seams of the case are constructed in the manner; justdeseams the case will be water and air tight.

Along the top edges of the sides and ends,

the metal of said sides and endsis bent outwardly at an abrupt right angle, returned to the general plane of said sides and ends, and

then bent at an abrupt right angle into said plane again, producing the folded projecting flange 11, whlch extends entirely around the case. The short portion bent into the plane of the sides and end forms a retaining flange 12, which also forms the extreme upper edge. of the sides and ends.

The cover of the case is made from sheet metal and may be provided with the pressed panel 14 for the purpose of improving the appearance and adding to the strength of the cover. The four edges of the cover 13 arebent downward at right angles to the general plane of the said cover, formln the continuous flange 15. This flange 15 1s so arranged as to just clear the edge of the flange 11. Upon the flange 11 is placed a. strip of packing 16 which is of such size as to fill the rectangular space between the flanges 11 and 12 and the cover 13 with the integral flange 15, and the said packlng 1s of such thickness as to extend sllghtly above. the flange 12. It will be understood that the packing 16 is continuous and extends entirely around the case. Suitable clamps are arranged at intervals along the top of the case for the purpose of fastening the cover 13 to the case and clamping or pressing the same toward'the flange 11 thus forming a tight joint with the packing 16.

Suitable handles should be arranged on the sides and ends as illustrated in the drawings for convenience in lifting and moving thecase, and if desired handles may also bearranged upon the cover for eonvemence 1n placing or'removing the same.
