To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county. of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Hammock- Supports, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like numerals on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to hammock or other supports and preferably of the general type disclosed in my Patents No. 641,038, dated Jan. 6, 1900, and No. 805,815, dated November 28, 1905.

In order that the principles of the invention may be readily understood, I have disclosed a selected embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a portion of a hammock support embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with parts broken away, representing both ends of a hammock support embodying my invention.

In that preferred embodiment of my invention selected for illustration, the hammock or other sup-port is composed of a backbone or ridge pole 1 and legs 2, 8, ar-

ranged in pairs at each end portion of the backbone and preferably adapted to be detachably connected thereto, so that the parts may be readily shipped in a knock-down condition and assembled .at the point of destination. The ridge pole 1 may be of suitable construction and material, and may if desired be provided with means for adjusting or varying its length as indicated in said atents. If desired, each of the legs may Be split or divided at its upper end and may be made as shown and described in said patents or in any other suitable manner.

I have herein represented two pairsof legs 2 and 3, but it will be apparent that the invention may be embodied in structures containing but one pair of legs or any desired number of pairs.

The legs, whether arranged in one or more pairs, are adapted to be detachably connected with the backbone with capacity to swing into open or closed position and may be provided with any suitable means adapting them for preferably detachable connection with the backbone. In Fig. '1, I have represented a collar 4 adapted to sllp on or off an end of the backbone and to engage the same in such manner as firmly to connect the parts. Each of the legs 2 and 8 is preferably provided with a bracket 5. Each bracket 5 is of suflicient length to engage both parts of the split or divided leg 2 or 8 as shown in Fig. 2. Engaging each bracket 5 and opposite laterally projecting portions of the collar 4 are pivotal pins 6 connecting the collar and legs with capacity for swinging movement of the latter. The collar 4 is here represented as provided with a lower loop 7 to receive a hook 8 or other device from which one end of the hammock is suspended.

As here shown, each of the brackets 5 is provided with a laterally projecting shoulder 9, preferably of the full length of said bracket and which when the legs 2 and 3 are swung into open position together assume such a position with relation to the top of the collar 4 as to permit the insertion of the end of the backbone 1 within the collar and resting upon said shoulders 9, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The elongated shoulders 9 provide an effective support for the backbone.

In order to provide means to take up or compensate for shrinkage or swelling of the parts if they be made of wood or analogous material, and also to provide adjustable means to control and limit the opening movement of the legs, I have in this embodiment of my invention provided each collar 4 with a plate 10 adapted to be received within the collar, preferably at the upper end thereof, and to be supported by adjustable means, such, for example, as screws 11 threaded into the collar and upset at their lower ends as indicated at 12, but loosely connected with the plate 10, so that the screws may be rotated to raise or lower the plate. It is apparent that but a single screw or other adjusting means may be provided for each collar, and also that if a plurality of screws or other adjusting devices be employed they may each co-act with a separate plate. It is, of course, apparent that other types of adjusting means may be employed to accomplish the results herein set forth.

It is apparent that in use the backbone or ridge pole 1 is clamped or firmly supported and held between the plate 10 at its upper edge and the shoulders 99 at its lower edge and that the elongated shoulders 9 form the base of a channel to receive the backbone 1 and serve most effectively to clamp it in position. It is apparent that the plate 10 may, if desired, be adjustedin position prior to assembling the parts, or that it may be adjusted after the collar 4: has been slid upon the backbone and the legs 2- and 3 opened to the desired extent.

It is apparent that not only the legs 2 and 3, but the backbone 1 may be made of metal, in which case the collar 4, if it be employed, may be directly connected to the legs 2 and 3 and the use of brackets be avoided.

Having thus described one illustrative em bodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.

I claim 1. A hammock or other support comprising in combination a backbone or ridge pole, supporting legs arranged in pairs, means to connect said legs with the backbone with capacity to open and close, and adjusting means co-acting with said backbone to limit the opening movement of said legs.

2. A hammock or other support comprising in combination a backbone or ridge pole, supporting legs arranged in pairs, means to connect said legs with the backbone with capacity to open and close, and adjustable means engaging said backbone to limit the opening movement of said legs.-

3. A hammock or other support comprising in combination a backbone or ridge pole,

supporting legs arranged in pairs and adapted to be assembled with or detached from said backbone and having capacity to open and close, and means adapted to be positioned prior to assembling said backbone and legs to vary the opening movement of the latter.

4. A hammock or other support comprising in combination a backbone or ridge pole, supporting legs arranged in pairs and adapted to be assembled with or detached from said backbone with capacity to swing into open or closed position, and means carried by said legs and adapted to be set prior to assembling said legs and backbone, and upon assembling the same to co-act with said backbone to control the amount of opening movement of said legs.

5. A hammock or other support comprising in combination a backbone or ridge pole,

a collar to be assembled with or disengaged from said backbone, a pair of legs swingingly connected to said collar, and adjustable means carried by said collar to control the outward swinging movement of said legs.

8. A hammock or other support comprising incombination a backbone or ridge pole, a pair of legs adapted to be assembled with or detached from said backbone with capacity to swing'into open or closed position,

and means co-acting with said backbone to control'the opening movement of said legs.

10. A hammock or other support comprising in combination a backbone or ridge pole, a pair of legs adapted to be assembled with or detached from said backbone with capacity to swing in open or closed position, and relatively adjustable means to engage opposed portions of said backbone to vary the extent of opening movement of the legs.

11. A hammock or other support comprising in combination a backbone or ridge pole, a pair of legs connected to the backbone with capacity to swing into open or closed position, and adjustable clamping means coacting with said backbone to control the amount of opening movement of said legs.

12. A hammock or other support comprising in combination a backbone or ridge pole, a pair of legs connected to the backbone with capacity to swing into open or closed position, each leg having spaced upper portions and elongated shoulders carried by the upper end of each leg, extending longitudinally of said backbone, and spanning the spaced upper portions of said legs, thereby together to present an elongated channel base for the reception of the backbone.
