Be it known that I, ORLO P. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hammock-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specifi cation, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in hammock supports, and by the term hammock I wish to be understood as including hammocks of all styles, either the knit or woven hammocks, or hammocks comprising a cushion or mattress with a suitable base.

The object of the invention is a simple arrangement of parts which will give a rigid and firm support for a hammock, and which may be readily taken down and set up; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.

In carrying out my invention I employ a long strip or top bar 2 preferably of wood which is supported at its ends in sockets 3 fitted over the ends of posts 4:, 5, also preferably formed from wood and which are entered into metal pockets 6 and 7 located at opposite ends of bases 8 which are connected together by a long brace 9. The lower ends of the posts t and 5 are connected with a brace 9 by stay-rods 10, 11, while the top bar is connected with the post by stay-rods Specification of Letters Patent.

The sockets 3 are preferably formed from cast metal and include a central notch 14 for the reception of the top bar and the sides of the socket form chambers to receive the mortised upper ends of the posts 4, 5. The pockets 6 and 7 comprise a plate with upwardly extending flanges between which the lower ends of the posts rest and in which they are bolted.

The hammock is hung from the top bar and as before stated, may be of any desired type. As herein shown it consists of a cushion or mattress 15 in a rigid frame which is supported at its ends by chains or cords 16 secured to the top bar. The stay rods connecting the various parts of the support are readily detached and the braces at the bottom may be readily detached from the bases 8 so that the device may be readily packed for shipment and easily set up. When in place the sockets 3 set over the upper ends of the posts 5 to inclose the upper ends and hold them together and the weight on the top bar holds the sockets down so that no attachment is necessary of the sockets to the upper ends of the posts.

I claim- A hammock support comprising two bases, a longitudinal brace connecting the same, a pocket located at each end of the said bases, a post entered into each pocket, said posts extending upwardly and inclined toward each other, socket-pieces into which the upper ends of the posts extend, said socketpieces formed with a notch, a top bar formed near its opposite ends with notches adapted to engage with notches in the socket-pieces and stay-rods connecting the top bar with the posts and the posts with the said longitudinal brace.
