To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEHEMIAH B. CRosBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented Improvements in Combined Shade and Pole Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a shade and pole bracket which may be secured to window casings without the use of screws and without marring the casings, which may be placed on either side of the casing and may be readily removed, replaced or transferred and which shall be adjustable to provide for varying widths of shades.
With these and other objects in view I have devised the novel bracket of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification, reference characters being used to indicate the several parts.
Figure l is a front elevation showing my novel bracket secured to a window casing as in use, a curtain pole and shade being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 2 a side elevation corresponding therewith; Fig. 3 a similar view showing the shade and pole brackets reversed as when used for inside shades and hangings; Fig. 4: a rear view of the bracket detached; Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 in Fig. t; Fig. 6 an elevation illustrating a form adapted for pole brackets only; Fig. 7 a vertical longitudinal section of Fig. 6; Fig. 8 an elevation illustrating a form adapted for inside shades only; and Fig. 9 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 8.
1O denotes a window casing, 11 (see dotted lines) a curtain pole and 12 (see dotted lines) a shade.
The essential feature of the invention is that the base plate 13 is attached to the casing by a fixed, inwardly-facing L-shaped prong, indicated by 14, and a movable inwardly-facing L-shaped prong, indicated by 15, and that a cam 16 is provided on the face of the plate for forcing the movable prong toward the other prong, thus causing them to grip the wood of the casing firmly and lock the base plate securely in place.
The simplest application of the invention is the form illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, which is especially adapted for inner shades, so called; that is for shades secured within and operating within the casing as distinguished from outer shades, so called, which are secured to the outer face of the casing. In Figs. 8 and 9, fixed prong 14: is placed at the upper end of the base plate and the cam is pivoted at the lower end thereof, the cam being in all cases provided with a handle 17 for convenience in operation. 18 denotes a shade bracket which is L-shaped and is shown as adjustably secured to the head 20 of a slide 19 by means of a set screw 21 which passes through a slot 22 in the head and engages the base plate of said shade bracket. The slide is retained in place by guides 23 upon the base plate and carries the movable prong 15 which extends through a slot 24 in the base plate. The cam bears against the lower end of the slide and is adapted to force it upward driving the movable L-shaped prong forward, and also moving the base plate downward slightly so that both prongs are forced into the wood of the casing, locking the base plate securely in place. In detaching the base plate the cam is of course turned backward to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 8 leaving its short diameter in alinement with the slide which drops down. The base plate is placed in position on the casing, the prongs driven into it by a slight blow and then the cam is turned to the full line position in Fig. 8, which looks the base plate securely in place. The shade bracket may be adjusted inward or outward to compensate for variation in the width of shades by loosening set screw 21 and moving the bracket inward or outward as may be required and then looking it in place by tightenting up the set screw.
The form illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive is adapted to carry either an outside or inside shade, also a curtain pole. The fixed prong is located near the lower end of the base plate and the cam at the upper end. 25 denotes the shade bracket which is L- shaped as before and slides transversely in guides 26 at the lower end of the base plate to compensate for varying widths of shades. In case an inside shade 1s required with a base plate upon the outer face of the casing it is simply required to reverse the bracket, that is change it from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3. The bracket is locked in position after adjustment by means of a set screw 27 which engages the base plate and the head of which engages the bracket. 28 denotes a pole bracket which slides transversely in guides 29 at the upper end of the base plate. The pole bracket may be reversed, as shown in Fig. 3. The movable prong in this form is carried by a slide 30 which passes under the pole bracket and between the guides, the prong extending through a slot 31 in the base plate. The bracket is locked in position after adjustment by means of a set screw 32 in the slide, the point of which bears against the base plate and raises the slide therefrom when the set screw is turned inward, clamping the pole bracket in the guides, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. In this form the cam bears against the upper end of the slide. In attaching the bracket the cam is turned backward, set screw 32 loosened, the slide raised and the prongs driven into the wood of the casing as before, after which the cam is turned to the locking position as in Fig. 1, which forces the slide downward, drives the movable prong into the wood and also raises the base plate slightly so that both prongs are locked in the wood as before.
The form illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 differs from the other forms in details only. The slide, indicated by 33, has no function other than carrying the movable prong. It is retained in place'by a guide 34 and the prong extends through a slot 35 in the base plate, the fixed prong being at the upper end of the base plate as in Figs. 8 and 9. Near the upper end of the base plate is an oscillating pole bracket 36 carried by a plate 37 which 1s pivoted to the face plate as at 38. The lower end of plate 37 is an arc of a circle of which the pivot is the center. Pole bracket 36 is locked in position by a washer 39 carried by a thumb screw 40 which passes through another washer 4:1 and engages the face plate. Stops 42 at the ends of the arc engage washer 4:1 and limit the oscillation of plate 37. In putting in a pole, thumb screw 40 is loosened and the bracket swung into position to receive the end of the pole,-as indicated by dotted lines. The bracket with the pole therein (there being of course a similar bracket on the other side of the casing) is then swung to place and locked there by tightening up the set screw, as-shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
It will-of course be obvious that the shade and pole brackets in the several forms may be adjusted and'in the form illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive may be reversed without loosening the base plate.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a base plate havin .its under face provided with a fixed attac ing prong, a movable member mounted on the outer face of said base plate and also provided with an attaching prong on its under'face,
said base plate beingprovided with a slot through which the last mentioned prong projects, and means mounted on the outer face of said base plate for shifting said movable member.
2. The combination with a base plate having an inwardly-facing prong, guldes and a slot, of a slide lying between the guides and having an inwardly-facing prong extending through the slot, a sliding bracket passing through the guides transversely above the slide, a set screw in the slide whereby it may be raised to lock the bracket and a'cam acting on the slide when the set screw is loosened to move the slide and lock the base plate.
3. The combination with a base plate provided with a slot and having its under face provided with a fixed prong, the outer face of said base being provided with guides, of a slide mounted between said guides and having a prong extended through said slot, a cam mounted on the outer face of said base and arranged to move said slide, a transversely arranged bracket engaging said guides, and means for locking said bracket.

The combination with a base plate provided with a slot and having its under face provided with a fixed prong, the outer face of said base being provided with guides, of a slide mounted between said guides and having a prong extended through said slot, a cam mounted on the outer face of said base and arranged to move said slide, a transversely arranged bracket engaging said guides, and a set screw carried by said slide to lock said bracket.
5. The combination with a base plate provided with a slot and having its under face provided with a fixed prong, the outer face of said base being provided with guides, of a slide mounted between said guides and having a prong extended through said slot, a cam mounted on the outer face ofsaid base and arranged to move said slide, a transversely arranged bracket engaging said guides, and means for moving said slide away from the face of said base to lock said bracket.
