SHIPPING-CARD HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enterprise, in the county of Harrison and State of \V est Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shipping- Card Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shipping card holders, and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will be designed for attachment to a coal car or the like containing a shipment of coal or material and to provide a novel form of retaining means for holding the distinguishing card or one designating the point from which the coal or material was shipped.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better set forth, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the card holder. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown a card holder comprising a member 1 provided at its sides with spaced flanges 2 which are disposed in spaced relation to the body portion of the member to form vertical guideways 3. At the bottom, the member 1 is provided with a horizontally disposed stop shoulder 4 provided with a rabbeted portion 5. The body of the member 1 is provided with a centrally located cutaway portion 6, and at the sides of the said portion 6 the body of the member is grooved vertically to form guideways 7. At the bottom of the cutaway portion 6 the member 1 is provided with a horizontally disposed stop 8 having a rabbeted upper portion 9 and lying in a plane above the stop 4;. The guideways 3 and 7 herein described form receptacles for receiving distinguishing cards 10 and 10 which are clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The body portion of the member 1 is provided with a centrally located thumb receiving passage 11 which is thus arranged to provide for the free manipulation or handling of the cards. The side edges of the member 1 are grooved longitudinally as shown at 12 and are arranged to receive clamping straps 13 secured to the side wall of the car shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. The straps herein described provide simple and novel means by means of which the card holder can be held to the car, but in some instances it is preferable to secure the holder to the car by means of bolts or other suitable fastening devices, and for this reason I preferably form in the member 1 a series of bolt receiving passages 14 and a series of nail receiving passages 15 which latter devices are preferable when the holder is used in connection with a car having a wooden hopper or body. The construction of the member 1 is such that the inner receptacle formed by the grooves 7 opens directly into the outer receptacle formed by the grooves 3 and the inner receptacle is located within the boundaries of the outer receptacle. Incident to the fact that the shoulder 4 is disposed outwardly and beneath the said shoulder 8 and in this manner access can be conveniently gained to the cards by Way of the thumb re ceiving passage 11.

The straps 13 are offset at their upper ends to form stops 13, and at the lower ends the said straps are also offset to form stops 14. These stops are so positioned with respect to the upper and lower edges of the card holder that the said holder is efiectively held against vertical movement, the straps being associated with the holder in such manner to absolutely prevent loss of the same.
