BASE FOR POLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AIRUS B. MCIVTILLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Vernon, in the county of Jennings and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bases for Poles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a base for a pole, or the like, to which the pole is detaohably secured, and has for an object to provide such a device whereby the decaying of the lower ends of the poles is prevented and which will at the same time rigidly support the pole.
The invention has for another object the provision of a novel fastening means whereby poles may be secured to the improved base in a rigid manner, the improved looking means requiring but little time to effect the positioning and the removing of the same.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved base having the pole attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the base disclosing the lower end of a pole secured thereto. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the base disclosing in section a pole attached to the same, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower end of a pole cut for engagement with the base.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates the body portion of the base which comprises an elongated and flattened member, preferably formed from concrete or a like plastic material, and which is provided with a foot 11 which is projected forwardly from the body portion 10 at the lower end thereof to form a firm engagement in the ground for the base. The lower end of the base 10 is preferably gradually re duced, while its upper end is provided with flanges 12 which are formed along the opposite edges of the base 10 having outer beveled edges to form continuations of the reduced portion of the base 10. The portion of the base 10 included between the flanges 12 is flattened to provide an inner wall which coacts with the inner faces of the flanges 12, the inner faces of the latter be- 111g slightly flared outwardly to support the lower end of a pole 13 which is applied thereto.
As will be seen from Fig. 5, the pole 13 is provided with av shank 14 which is formed by cutting away the lower portion of the post at three sides of the same to form angular faces upon the shank 14 which are adapted for snug engagement between the flanges 12. By the reduction of the lower end of the post 13 a shoulder 15 is formed which engages upon the upper flattened face of the base 10 and serves as a support for the post. A U-shaped bolt 16 is employed for securing the post 13 upon the base and is engaged through the shank 14 in apertures 17 which are arranged in vertical alinement and extended entirely through the shank 14. The arms of the bolt 16 are projected from the shank 14 through the body portion of the base 10, the threaded extremities of the bolt 16 being terminated outwardly of the rear face of the body 10 and receiving suitable clamping nuts 18. A portion of the wire 19 is engaged about the base 10 and against the outer face of the shank 14 in order to further hold the same in position. The upper end of the base 10 carries a band 20 which is formed of a strip of metal encircled about the base 10 and turned outwardly at its adjacent end to form lips 21 through which is disposed a clamping bolt 22 for securing the band 20 in position. The band 20 is engaged about the base 10 in flushed relation to the upper edge thereof and is thereby seated against the shoulder 15 at the forward side of the shank 14. In this construction it is observed that the base 10 is provided with a longitudinal and angularly formed slot in the forward face thereof for the reception of the rectangular shank 14 of the pole 13. In this manner the pole 13 is prevented from turning with respect to the base and therefore a solid connection is established between the two.
In use the base 10 is inserted in the ground to such an extent that the upper portion thereof, only is above the surface. The pole 13, or post, is secured to this upper portion and may be detached therefrom without the necessity of removing the base 10 from the ground. As the base 10 is formed from a practically non-corrosive material the same said shank, a U-shaped bolt extended through said shank and said base, and a band engaged about the upper end of said base and said shank.
2. A support for a pole including an elongated and flattened base, flanges formed at one side of said base and adjacent the edges 7 thereof for the reception of the pole therebetween, a U-shaped bolt engaged through the pole and through said base, and a length gf wire wrapped about said pole and said ase.
3. A pole support including a shank formed upon the end of the pole, an elongated base engaged about said shank, a length of wire wrapped about said shank and said base, a U-shaped bolt engaged through said shank and said base and a band carried by said base for engagement about said shank.
4:. In a support as specified the combination with a pole, of a shank formed upon the lower end of said pole, a shoulder formed at the upper end of said shank, a base disposed about said shank and depended therefrom, a U-shaped bolt engaged through said shank and said base, clamping nuts engaged upon the extremities of said bolt for con tracting said shank toward said base, a length of wire wound about said shank and said base, a band engaged about the upper end of said base and said shank, lugs formed upon the adjacent ends of said band and a clamping bolt secured to said lug for contracting said band.
