HOSE-CLAMP APPLIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1913.
Application filed January 26, 1912. Serial 110. 673,565.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose-Clamp Appliers, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to rovide a tool for bending wire, particular y adaptable for use in bending wire around hose.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of amain bar, having one end thereof adapted for engagement with the medial portion of the wire and the other end thereof provided with a bearing, a clamping member mounted to slide on the main bar and a screw rod secured to the clamping plate and mounted to slidably extend through the said bearing, the outer end of the screw rod being provided with a handle, threadedly engaging the screw rod and adapted to turn thereon to move the clamping member toward or away from the inner end of the main member.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line P 1 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a main plate 10 having one end thereof grooved to form a notch 11, inclined guideways 12 being formed on the main plate 10, adjacent the notch 11, a laterally extending apertured bearing 13 being provided at the other end of the said main plate. Mounted to slide on the upper side of the main plate 10 is a clamping member 14, having stirrups 15 secured to the body thereof, and extending around the sides of the main plate 10 to retain the clamping. member 14 in slidable engagement with the main plate.
The sliding plate 14 is provided with a plurality of 'vertically extending slots 15', in'which are mounted to swing segmentally shaped clamping members 16, having their under sides serrated, the mentioned slots 15 being substantially in horizontal alinement with the guideways 12 formed at the forward end of the main plate 10. Rigidly secured to the body of the clamping member 14 is a screw rod 17 extended rearwardly to slidably pass through the opening in the bearing 13, a handle 18 being threadedly mounted on the free end of the screw rod 17 and rotatable on the screw rod, the said handle being adapted to abut against the handle 13.
In the use of my device a piece of wire 19 is looped to form a portion 20 and the wire is then bent around a hose 21, the notch 11 being engaged with the portion 20, the ends of the wire being passed over the guideways 12 and through the slots 15 to be engaged by the serrated under sides of the clamping members 16. Now by turning the handle 18 on the screw rod 17, the handle abutting against the bearing 13 will move the clamping member away from the notch 11, toward the bearing 13, thus tightening the wire 19 around the hose 21. When the wire has been sufiiciently tightened, the ends of the wire are cut, adjacent the portion 20 after the mentioned ends are bent around the portion 20, thus rigidly securing the wire to the hose and rigidly coupling the hose to the shank of a nozzle or the like.
I claim In an implement of the class described, a base member having guide-ways formed on one end thereof, a member slidably mounted on the upper side of said plate and provided with a plurality of vertical slots opening out through the upper edge thereof, said slots being disposed in horizontal alinement with the guide-ways of the base member, means secured to the under side of said member and embracing said plate for retaining the member to said plate, and clamp ing members mounted in said slots and adapted to swing in a direction toward the opposite end of said base member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES E. BLAKE.
