HANDLE FOR MASSAGE APPARATUS.
Specification'of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 4, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS A. MCCALL and CHARLES M. SIEBERT, Jr., citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Massage Apparatus; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in handles for pneumatic massage apparatus and comprises essentially a hollow handle made up of sections in which a filter or screen, such as a sponge or analogous material is positioned, and is adapted to filter the air passing through the handle. f
The invention comprises essentially a handle having a contracted neck with perforations therein which may be conveniently regulated by the thumb of a person holding the handle or by means of a turning plug operated by the thumb of the operator in order to regulate a vibratory suction produced by connecting the handle to a vacuum apparatus.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the' appended claims.
We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of our improved suction handle for vibratory massage apparatus. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the handle. Fig. 3 is a view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a slight modification of the invention. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the modied form, and Fig. 6 is a detail view showing a modified form of the aperture for regulating the suction.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and B designate two sections of the handle which have threaded connections, and C is a screen held the section A and the end of the threaded.

To the contracted end of the section B a tube F is connected which in turn is adapted to communicate with the vacuum chamber of the massage apparatus, not shown. The section A has a contracted neck portion H having a cylindrical chambered portion H in which is mounted a turning plug I having a diametrically disposed opening J therein through which communication may be had between the passageway N forming the shank portion of the socket N for holding the cup J, and the interior of the section A which communicates with the vacuum chamber through the pipe described. It will be noted that the circumference or periphery of the valve I is provided with a groove I, circumferentially formed and adapted to form a means of communication between the perforations K and the passageway in the handle when the valve is turned,
in certain positions. A series of perforations, designated by letter K, are formed in the cylindrical wall of the chambered portion of said neck and regulated by the turning plug, as shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, or by means of the thumb of the 'operator in the form shown in Figs. i to 6 inclusive of the drawings.
Referring to Fig. l of the drawings, it will be noted that a stirrup shaped operating member, designated by letter S, is fastened by means of the screws S to the opposite ends of the turning plug I and the ends of said member' S terminate in the points L which cooperate with the shoulders T at the ends of the recess T2 in the wall of said neck to limit the rotary movement of the turning plug. The cup O or any other attachment may be held to the socket member by inserting the shank portion O thereof within a gasket Q, which is seated within the socket member in the manner shown.
Referring to Figs. 4: and 6 of the drawings, it will be noted that the turning plug is dispensed with and either a series of perforations K are afforded over which the thumb of the operator may conveniently move while the hand of thev operator holds the handle or an elongated slot K2, as shown in Fig. 6, may be provided, which slot may be regulated by moving the thumb back and forward to regulate the force of the suction. ln said modified form, the end of the neck terminates in a contracted portion A2 adapted to receive a resilient cup A3.
By the provision of a handle having the means for regulating the suction as shown and described, it will be noted that the strength of the suction force may be conveniently regulated either by the operator moving the turning plug by the thumb held in its natural position while the hand ygrips the handle or in the modified form by the operator moving his thumb backward and forward over the perforations or elongated slot, thus regulating the vacuum force in the same manner. By the provision of a handle embodying the features of our invention, it will be apparent that one hand of the operator holding the handle may regulate the force of the vacuum without the use of an additional hand for regulating valves about the vacuum apparatus, leaving the other hand of the operator f-ree for other uses.
What we claim to be new is l. A handle for massage apparatus made up of sections fitted together and provided with suitable filtering means, said handle being adapted to communicate with a vacuum pump, one of the sections of the handle being provided with perforations to regulate the force of the vacuum.
2. A handle for massage apparatus made up of sections fitted together and provided with suitable filtering means, said handle being adapted to communicate with a vacuum pump, one of the sections of the handle be ing provided with perforations, means mounted within one of the sections of the handle and movable relative to said perforations to regulate the vacuum force.
3. A handle for massage apparatus made up of sections fitted together and provided with suitable filtering means, said handle being adapted to communicate with a vacuum pump, one of the sections of the handle being provided with perforations, a turning plug mounted within one of the sections of the handle and adapted to open or close communication between the interior of the handle and the atmosphere to regulate the vacuum force.

A handle for massage apparatus made up of sections fitted together and provided with suitable filtering means, said handle being adapted to communicate with a vacuum pump, one of the sections of the handle being provided with perforations, a turning plug 4mounted within one of the sections of the handle and adapted to open or close communication between the interior of the handle and the atmosphere to regulate the vacuum force, and means outside the handle for operating said turning plug.

A 'handle for massage apparatus made up of sections fitted together and provided with suitable filtering means, said handle being adapted to communicate with a vacuum pump, one of the sections of the handle being provided with perforations, aturning plug mounted within one of the sections of the handle and adapted to open or close communication between the interior of the handle and the atmosphere to regulate the vacuum force, and stops for regulating the movement of said plug in opposite directions.

A handle for massage apparatus made up of sections fitted together and provided with suitable filtering means, said handle being adapted to communicate with a vacuum pump, one of the sections of the handle being provided with perforations, a turning plug mounted within one of the sections of the handle and adapted to open or close communication between the interior of the handle and the atmosphere to regulate the vacuum force, a member fixed outside the handle and fastened to the end 4of said plug and adapted to be actuated to turn the lug.

A handle for massage apparatus made up of sections fitted together and provided with suitable filtering means, said handle being adapted to communicate with a vacuum pump, one of the sections of the handle being provided with perforations, a turning plug mounted within one of the sections of the handle and adapted to open or close communication between the interior of the handle and the atmosphere to regulate the vacuum force, a member fixed outside the handle and fastened to the end of said plug and adapted to be actuated to turn the plug, the ends of said member cooperating with shoulders upon thecasing to limit the movements of the plug in opposite directions.

A handle for massage apparatus made up of sections fitted together and provided with suitable filtering means, said handle being adapted to communicate with a vacu um pump, one of said sections having a contracted neck portion which is perforated and terminating in a socket, and a cup fitted to said socket.
9. A handle for massage apparatus made up of sections fitted together and provided with suitable filtering means, said handle being adapted to communicate with a vacuum pump, one of said sections having a cylindrical chambered portion, the wall of which is apertured, an apertured turning plug mounted in said chambered portion, and means outside the handle for turning said plug.
