Description

mattedtctr @aient @mitra .teem Patent No. 96,115, dated october 2c, 1869.
IHPROVEMEN T IN FILTERING-SECTIONS FOR TUBE-WELLS.
The Schedule referred vto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whmn it may concern Be it known that I, EDMUND HOLDEN, of Hartford, in the county of Van Buren., and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Filters for TubeNVells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had tothe accompanying-drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. f
My invention consists of a peculiar novel const-ruction and arrangement of two slotted tubes, one fit-ted within the other, and being removable.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure I is a side view of my improved filter.
Figure 2 is a side View. of the inner tube.
`Figure 3 is a vertical section of the filter, showing both tubes in place.
Thel outer tube, seen in fig. 1, is approtection case,
intended to be attached to the tube forming the well,
by a screw coupling. The ylower end of this tube is pointed, to penetrate theearth in the usual manner 'of tube-wells. about one-twentieth of an inch wide, and from onethird to one-fourth the circumference of the tube in length, closely arranged, but without too much weakening the tube.
` The inner tube, fig. 2, is slotted in a similar manner to the protecting-case, except that the slots are much narrower. ',Ihis tube -is the filter proper, and its external diameter is less than the internal diameter of the protection case, so that a small space shall be left This case is perforated with slots A,
between them when the filter is inserted in the case, as seen in fig. 3.
The flanges B B, on the ends of the inner tube, fit the protecting-case, but so as to be easily removed for cleansing. i l Both tubes may be constructed of brass, copper,
galvanized iron,V or other' metal'not liablel to rust or corrode.
The size of the slots may be varied, to suit the nature of the soil in which it is to be used, and, if desirable, a wrapper of woven wire may surround the inner cylinder.
The manner of its operation is as follows:
The filter being placed inthe protecting-case, and this attached to the Well-tube, and driven into the ground till it reaches Water, the water enters the tube through the protection case and filter, while sand and grit are excluded.
I do not broadly claim attaching a filter to tubewells; but,
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of` A filter, constructed of two concentrictubes of cop- Witnessesi W. A. ENGLE, O. H. ENGLE.
