Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. SPEN- CER, citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding-Sales-Book Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates particularly to duplicate sales books, but has for its object broadly to provide improved means for detachably holding pads or book filling leaves.
To the above ends, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which villustrate the invention, designed for use as a duplicate sales book with carbon holding attachment, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with some parts sectioned, showing the improved device; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 002 m2 of Fig. 1, some parts being broken away; and Fia- 3 is an enlarged view partly in side elevation, partly in section and with some parts broken away, showing the metallic parts of the improved device.
In this preferred form of my invention, the pad clamping device is secured to one end and the carbon holding device to the other end of a thin sheet metal plate 1, having at its lower end a laterally bent and folded flange 2.
The pad clamping device is made up of a pair of clamping plates 3 having at their lower edges opposing clamping teeth 4 and having at their upper edges hinged flanges 5 that project approximately at right angles to the respective clamping plates 3. These hinge flanges 5 have axially alined bent hinge lugs 5a through which a hinge pin 6 is passed to pivotally connect the two clamping plates. This hinge pin or bolt 6 is located midway between the two clamping plates 3, with its said axis at the intersection of the planes of the two hinge flanges 5, so that the hinge lugs 5a are one-half inside and onehalf outside of the planes of the said two flanges 5. The hinge lugs 5a are located in pairs and are spaced apart to afford clearance for a torsional spring 7 which surrounds the intermediate portion of the hinge pin 6. This torsional spring 7 at its ends (see Fig. 1) acts against the backs of the hinge flanges 5 and exerts force which tends to throw the two edges of the clamping plates 3 together.
One of the clamping plates 3 is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the upper end portion of the reinforcing back plate 1 and extends transversely from one edge to the other thereof. The free or outer clamping plate 3, at its intermediate portion, is provided with an upturned lip 8 which affords a finger piece, by means of which said clamping plate may be pivotally moved away from the relatively fixed clamping plate.
The numeral 9 indicates the pad, which is of the standard or any suitable construction, but preferably of the type wherein the leaves are connected to a binding head 10 and are perforated where they join the said binding head.
The clamping plates 3 should be of such width that when the pad head 10 is .forced against the inwardly bulged portions of the hinge lug 5a and is clamped by the teeth l4, the perforations of the leaves of the pad will be slightly below the said teeth 4. It is here important to note that these inwardly bulged hinge lugs 5EL afford a stop for the upper end or head of the pad, regardless of whether the clamping plates 3 are opened or closed beyond parallel positions. Also, with the hinge that connects the two plates 3 intermediate of the two plates, the said clampin plates are made eicient to hold a pad either when opened up wide or when nearly closed, sothat the range of the holding capacity thereof is greater than with the said hinge located at any other place.
The carbon sheet 11 is adapted to be held at its lower edge against the clamping flange 2, by the transverse portion of a clamping bail 12, the prongs of which are provided with inturned trunnion-like ends 13 pivotally connected to the reinforcing back plate 1. Preferably, the said trunnions 13 are thus pivotally connected'to the plate 1 by reversely bulged or pressed bearings 14 formed by slitting the said plate 1 and pressing the adjacent parts 14 in reverse directions. This affords a simple, efficient and cheap construction. The trunnions 13 of the bail 12 may be engaged and disengaged With the said bearings 14 by lateral springing movements of the arms of the bail.
The parts so far described in themselves constitute a complete and operative device, but they are preferably employed in connection with a suitable folding cover. This cover is preferably made in the customary way and comprises stiftn cardboard plates 15 covered With leather or cloth 16 and connected at their upper ends by a flexible web 17. The metal reinforced back plate 1 is secured to one of the said cardboards 15 and is incased by the covering 16 of the latter. This metal back plate 1, as is evident, very greatly reinforces the cover to which it is applied, and affords a device of great durability and which will not be accidentally broken. I-Iitherto, in duplicate sales books of this general character there have been employed metallic carbon holding devices and metallic pad clamping devices that were independently secured to the cardboard cover in such manner that a Weakness was developed in the cardboard cover at the places where the said metallic devices were connected thereto. As is evident, the metal plate affords a rigid connection between the carbon holder and the pad clamping device which is entirely independent of the cover, and, furthermore, very greatly reinforces the cover to Which it is applied.
The device above described has in practice been found highly efficient for the purd poses had in view.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a metal plate having at one end a laterally bent clamping flange and having in its body above said clamping liange bearings formed by slitting said plate and bulging the slit portions, and a clamping bail coperating with said clamping flange and having inturned trunnions seated in the said bearings of said plate, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pair of cover members connected by a flexible web, of a thin metallic reinforcing plate secured to and eX- tending from end to end of one of said cover members, said metal plate having at its lower end a clamping flange, a clamping bail pivotally connected to said reinforcing plate and coperating with the clamping flange thereof to hold the carbon sheet, and a pair of hinged springpressed pad clamping plates, one of which is rigidly secured to the upper end of said reinforcing plate, substantially as described.
