Description

G. J. EIGHHORNG BOX. APPLICATION II-LED OCT. 11, 1909.
Patented May 31, 1910.
UNITED %TAT;E%
PATENT @FFIQE.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 1910.
Application filed October 11, 1909. Serial No. 522,348.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. EIOI-IHORN, citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
In the sale of articles of merchandise and especially the sale of tobacco in packages it is desirable to keep the contents of the box from the air and prevent it from becoming too dry; and the object of my invention is to construct such a box and supply it with a transparent cover which cover is provided with a hinge removably attached to the cover and adapted to engage the box and serve as a hinge and also removably hold the cover on the box.
It consists in a body of the size desired and a cover provided with loops at opposite sides near one end and a catch or hook intermediate between the loops, also in a spring hinge adapted to pass through the loops and engage the sides of the box to serve as a hinge and also to engage the hook and hold the cover on the box.
The following specification when taken in connection with the drawings accompanying the same and forming a part hereof will describe and show the manner of construction, and the mode of operation.
Figure l is a perspective view of the body of the box with the cover and hook attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box and cover with the hinge unlocked and out of engagement with the body of the box. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the hook and cross section of the hinge and of a piece of the cover. Fig. d is a perspective view of the box showing the loops, the hook and the hinge unlocked.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in each of the figures.
Referring to the drawings A represents the sides of the box, B the ends. The box is preferably of rectangular shape and the cover is adapted to fit into and remain nearly flush with the upper surface of the sides and ends of the box. The cover is constructed of the frame D, into which is fitted a glass or other transparent material. Near the opposite corners of one end is secured loops E and a little to-one side of the center is a hook G shown in Fig. 3.
The fastener for removably securing the cover on the box preferably consists in a spring wire provided with pointed ends I, and the wire is bent into the loop K at its center. At the opposite end of the cover is a handle P.
The manner of assembling and operating my device is substantially as follows. The ends I of the fastener are passed through the loops E, then the operator grasps the loop K and pulls it toward the end of the box which action will have a tendency to contract or shorten the fastener and when the points of the spring do not project beyond the surface of the cover, the cover is placed in position and the operator eases up on the pull of the loop and the spring hinge comes into action and forces its points into the sides of the box. The operator then turns the loop to position shown in Fig. 1, and at the same time forces the fastener beneath the hook G which still further lengthens or straightens out the spring and causes it to more rigidly engage the sides of the box and also looks or presses on the cover and prevents it from opening by its own weight, but the operator can open the cover by the handle P and it will readily swing on the ends of the fastener.
If the operator desires to remove the cover he turns the loop to position in Fig. 2 out from engagement with the hook G.
Having now described my invention what ent is 1. In a box, a body, a cover, a spring removably attached to the cover and adapted to engage the sides of the box and serve to removably secure the cover in the box, and means connected with the spring, and cover for locking the ends of the spring in engagement with the sides of the box.
2. In a box, a body, a cover, a spring fastener formed of a single piece, means for removably securing the fastener on the cover, and means when the spring has been brought into engagement with the sides of the box to hold said spring in such engagement and thereby removably fasten the cover to the box.
8. In a box. a body, a removable cover, a fastener'formed of a single spring, loops near opposite sides of the cover for removably holding the fastener to the cover, and a hook adapted to be engagedby the spring l and force the ends of the fastener into en- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patgagement With the sides of the boX and hold ing the fastener to expand the spring for the cover removably secured to the box. removably holding the cover on the box. 10
