SUSPENSION-COUCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 2, 1908.
Patented. May 31, 1910.
Serial No. 451,320.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspension-Couches, of which the following is a specification.
Suspension couches are known in which there are side pieces having at their ends end pieces and the body passes over the frame under the end pieces and is then attached to suitable suspension means. The side pieces may fit through pockets or hems in the body at its sides.
Objects of the present invention are to provide for adjusting or forcing the side pieces apart so as to tighten the body and to provide for permitting the side pieces to be brought together as for convenience in shipment.
The invention will be claimed at the end hereof but will first be described in connection with the embodiment of it selected for illustration in the accompanying explanatory drawings in which Figure 1, is a perspective view showing the side pieces of the frame. Fig. 2, is a plan view of the under side of the frame illustrating mechanism embodying features of the invention. Figs. 3 and 4, are sectional views drawn to an enlarged scale and illustrating details of parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5, is a top or plan view illustrating a construction embodying a modification of the invention, and Fig. 6, is a perspective View illustrating details of construction shown in Fig. 5.
In the drawings 1 and 2, are the side pieces of the frame at the ends of which are end pieces. In the construction shown in Figs. 24:, inclusive, the end pieces 1 and 2, are provided with hooks 3, that receive the end pieces 4. Interposed between the side pieces 1 and 2, are means for adjusting them apart. These means comprise a link 5, pivoted to the side pieces 1, and to the central portion of a lever 6, to one end of which is pivoted a bolt 7 The side piece 2, is provided with a socket 8, that detachably receives the end of the bolt so that the lever 6,
. may be turned up into substantial alinement with the link 5, and thus push the bolt 7 against the end of its socket thereby spreading the side pieces 1 and 2, apart. The pivotal connection between the link 5, and lever 6, is made adjustable as by means of the thumb nut bolt and slot connection 9, and by so adjusting this pivotal point the extent to which the side pieces are pushed apart may be increased or diminished. When the bolt 7, is withdrawn from its socket or keeper by turning the lever 6, in the other direction, the parts may be placed side by side for shipment. As shown the shanks of the hooks 3, are castings one of which is provided with the socket 8, and the other of which is provided with a pivot for the link 5, and with a lip 10, having an inturned flange 11. The lip receives the end of the lever 6, and the flange 11, serves to prevent its accidental displacement.
As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the castings 12 and 13, need not be fitted with hooks but are fitted with sockets 14, and one of them is fitted with an adjusting screw 15, the point of which extends into the socket. The end piece 16, at one of its ends is fitted in the socket 141, and at the other of its ends abuts on the point of the screw. A sleeve 17, is shown at this end of the end piece as encircling the latter and extending into the socket. The end piece 16, may be removed so as to permit the side pieces to be brought together and the screw 15, affords means for adjusting the side pieces apart.
lVhat I claim is:
1. The combination with the side pieces of a suspension couch of castings applied to the ends of said pieces, and means detachably connected to the castings to permit of the side pieces being arranged side by side and said means adapted to operate upon the castings to adjust and hold the side pieces apart, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the side pieces of a couch of castings applied to the ends of the side pieces, a bolt, keeper or socket connected with one of said castings, a link pivoted to the other of said castings, a lever pivoted to the link, and a bolt pivoted to the lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
JAMES B. PATTERSON.
