To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERT C. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of 01110, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding- Books, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in manifolding pads for salesbook purposes and the like.

It pertains particularly to a manifold book for making triplicate copies of a record and in which two separate pads or sections of slips are employed.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sales book embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, illustrating a step in the operation of the book. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing a set of slips in position to make a triplicate record.

In the drawings, 1 indicates as an entirety a base for supporting and holding, properly positioned relative to each other, two pads or. sections of leaves, the lower one of which is indicated by 2, and the upper one by 3. The opposite ends of these leaf sections 2 and 3 may be connected to the base 1 in any suitable manner.

The section or pad 2 is preferably composed of a plurality of superposed sets of duplicating slips, each set formed from a single sheet of paper folded intermediate of its ends along a transverse line 4 to form an original slip 5 and a duplicate slip 6, somewhat longer than the original slip. For the purpose of easy detachment, the sheet of paper may be perforated or weakened along the line 4:. The free ends of the duplicate slips 6 are suitably connected or held together, as indicated at 7 When desired, each of these slips may be weakened along the transverse line 6 near its upper end, for

facilitating its detachment from the pad.

The pad or section 3 is composed of a series of superposed single slips 8 suitably connected together preferably at their lower ends, as indicated at 8. Each one of these single slips 8 may be perforated or weakened along a transverse line 8*, to facilitate the detachment of the slip, if desired.

9 is a transfer sheet of any suitable composition and construction. Preferably it is connected at its upper end to a holder 9 which also serves as a separating plate or shield between the lowermost slip of the sect1on 3 and the uppermost slip of the section 2, and is disposed relative to the section 2 so as to leave exposed above it a portion 5' of the original slips 5 of each set of duplicate slips composing the section 2.

10 is a transfer sheet, also of any desired composition and construction, suitably connected at its upper end to the upper end of the section 2, and of a length substantially that of the duplicate slip 6.

11 is a cover for the pad, suitably connected to the upper end thereof and extending beneath the base 1 and being foldable along a transverse line 11', so as to allow its free end to be thrown over on top of the leaf sections 2 and 3.

In order to facilitate the operation of the I book without the necessity of disturbing the transfer sheets 9 and 10, these sheets may be notched or recessed, as indicated at 9 and 10, respectively, to expose the free ends of the slips immediately beneath them.

In operation, with the parts as shown in Fig. 1, the slip 8 of the pad 3 which lies immediately beneath the transfer sheet 9, serves as a triplicate slip. The operator grasps the exposed upper right hand corner 5' of the original slip 5 of the set of duplicate slips uppermost in the leaf section 2, and draws it forward and upward from beneath the leaf section 3, and then rearward, as indicated in Fig. 2, until the duplicate slip 6 attached thereto is positioned beneath the transfer sheet 10. Then the operator throws forward and downward the said original slip 5, so that it rests upon the transfer sheet 10, and the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, ready for transcription upon the slip 5 of any desired data.

After the record has been made the original and duplicate slips 5 and 6 may be detached from the book, either at the same time or separately, leaving the transfer sheet 10 above the transfer sheet 9, as shown in Fig. 1, and the triplicate slip 8 may be removed from beneath the transfer sheet 9 and folded back, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, or detached from the pad 3, as desired.

It will be noted that no handling of the transfer sheet is required in the operation of the book, which is extremely simple and rapid. In the event that it is desired to dispense with either or both transfer sheets and have the under surfaces of the original and duplicate, either or both, coated with suitable transfer material, the arrangement of the slips is readily adaptable for this purpose. Where this is done, the leaf section 3 operates as a shield between the slips of the section 2 upon which transcription is being made, in the operation of the book, and those which are beneath the section 3.

WVhat I claim is 1. In a manifolding book, the combination of a section or pad comprising a series of superposed sets of slips, each set having two slips connected together at their lower ends, the lowermost slip being the longer of the two and the upper ends of the original slips of the said sets being free and the upper ends of the duplicate slips of the sets being suitably held together, a second section or pad comprising a series of superposed slips arranged upon said first section to expose the upper ends of the longer slips of the said set of slips comprising said first section, and means arranged to hold the said sections or pads properly positioned relative to each other.

2. In a inanifolding book, the combination of a section or pad comprising a series of superposed sets of slips, each set having two slips connected together at their lower ends, the lowermost slip being the longer of the two and the upper ends of the original slips of the said sets being free and the upper ends of the duplicate slips of the set being suitably held together, a second section or pad comprising a series of superposed slips arranged upon said first section to expose the upper ends of the longer slips of the set of slips comprising said first section, means arranged to hold the said sections or pads properly positioned relative to each other, and suitable transfer medium between the two slips of the set of sli s in use, and between the lowermost slip of said set and the1 uppermost slip in said second section or P 3. In a manifolding book, the combination of a section or pad comprising a series of superposed sets of slips, each set having two slips connected together at their lower ends, the upper ends of the original slips of the said sets being free and the upper ends of the duplicate slips of the sets being suitably held together, a transfer sheet suitably held to be interposed between the slips of each of said sets when in use, a second section or pad arranged upon said first section and comprising a series of superposed slips, a second transfer sheet arranged to lie upon the uppermost slip of said second section and between it and the lowermost slip ofthe set of slips of said first section in use, and means arranged for holding the said sections properly positioned relative to each other, the

said means permitting the withdrawal of a set of slips of the first section from beneath the said second section. Y

4. In a manifolding book, the combination of a section or pad comprising a series of superposed sets of slips, each set made from a piece of paper folded intermediate of its ends to form two slips connected together at their lower ends of which the original slip is short-er than the duplicate slip, a second section or pad comprising a series of superposed slips arranged upon said first section to expose the upper ends of the longer slips comprised in said first section, means engaging the upper ends of the said longer slips and also engaging the said slips of the said second section to hold the sections or pads properly positioned relative to each other, a suitable transfer medium to be interposed between the slips of each set of slips of said first section when they are in use, and a suitable transfer medium interposed between the duplicate slips of said set of slips in use and the top slip of said second section.

5. In a manifolding book, the combination of a section or pad comprising a series of superposed sets of slips, each set having two slips connected together at their lower ends, and the original slip of each set being shorter than the one to which it is connected, a second section comprising a series of superposed slips arranged upon said first section so as to always leave exposed above the upper ends of said second section a portion of the original slip of the topmost set of slips of the first section, and means arranged to engage the upper ends of the longer slips of said first section and the lower ends of the slips of said second section to hold the said sections properly positioned relatively to each other.

6. In a manifolding book, the combination of a section or pad comprising a series of superposed sets of duplicating slips, the slips of each set being suitably connected together at their lower ends, and the original slip being shorter than the duplicate slip, a second section or pad of slips arranged upon said first section to leave exposed above said second section a portion of the original slip of the topmost set of slips of the said first section, and means arranged to hold the said sections or pads properly positioned relatively to each other.

7. In a manifolding book, the combination of a section or series of superposed sets of duplicating slips, the slips of each set being suitably connected together at their lower ends, and the original slip being shorter than the duplicate slip, means engaging the upper ends of the duplicate slips of the said sets to hold the said sets of slips in pad form, a second section or series of slips arranged upon said first section to leave exposed above Cir the said second section a portion of the original slip of the topmost set of slips of said first section, means arranged at the bottom of said second section to hold the slips thereof in pad form, and means arranged to hold the said sections or pads properly positioned relatively to each other.

8. In a manifolding book, the combination of a section or pad comprising a series of superposed sets of slips, each set having two slips connected together at their lower ends, the upper ends of the original slips of said sets being free, and the upper ends of the duplicate slips of said sets being suitably held together a transfer sheet suitably held to be interposed between the slips of each of said sets when in use, a second section or pad arranged upon said first section and comprising a series of superposed slips, a transfer sheet arranged to lie upon the uppermost slip of said second section, and between it and the duplicate slip of the set of slips of the said first section in use, the upper end of said last described transfer sheet be ing suitably held in position adjacent to the upper ends of the slips of said second section, and means arranged to hold said sections properly positioned relatively to each other.

9. In a manifolding book, the combination of a section or series of superposed sets of slips, each set having two slips connected together at their lower ends, the original slip being shorter than the duplicate slip, means engaging the upper ends of the duplicate slips to hold the said sets of slips in pad form, a second section of slips arranged upon said first section to leave exposed above said second section a portion of the original slip of the topmost set of slips of said first section, means arranged at the bottom of the said second section to hold the slips thereof in pad form, means arranged to hold the said sections or pads properly positioned relatively to each other, a transfer sheet arranged to lie upon the uppermost slip of said second section, and between it and the duplicate slip of the set of slips of the said first section when in use, the upper end of said transfer sheet being suitably held in position adjacent to the upper free ends of the slips of said second section and having a cutaway portion to expose one corner of the said slips, and a transfer sheet suitably connected at the upper end of said first section and arranged to be interposed between the slips of the uppermost set of said first section and having a cut-away portion arranged to expose a corner of the original slip of the first section beneath it, and a corner of the uppermost slip of the second section.
