CONRAD ROBERT ANDERSON, OF WEST DULUTI-I, MINNESOTA.
RATCHET-VRENCB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CONRAD ROBERT ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Test Duluth, in the county of St. Louis, States of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in RatchetlVrenches; and 1 do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ratchet wrenches.
The object of the invention is the production of a ratchet wrench which is simple and cheap in construction and highly efcient in use, and to this end the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top elevation of a ratchet wrench constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, an edge view of same, Fig. 3, a sectional View of the ratchet wheel of the wrench; Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of the work-engaging socket adapted to be engaged by the ratchet wheel; Fig. 5, a longitudinal section of the work engaging socket; and Fig. G, a modified form of the work engaging socket; and Fig. 7, a detail view showing a modified form of construction of the handle of the wrench with t-he spaced arms between which the ratchet wheel is mounted formed integral with said handle.
Referring to the drawings, the wrench is shown as comprising a stock 10 having a handle 11 provided at one end, and a pair of parallel spaced arms 12 and 13 projecting from the other' end. Journaled between the arms 12 and 13 is a ratchet wheel 1-1 provided centrally with a squared bore 15 which has provided in its wall a continuous groove 16 for a purpose to be presently described.
Pivoted between the projecting arms 12 and 13 are the oppositely disposed pawls 17 and 18, the inner ends of which are adapted to be normally forced outwardly by the spring 19 disposed between the ends of said pawls and between the arms 12 and 13.
Speccation of Letters Eatent.
Application filed December 9, 1909.
Patented May 31, 1910.
Serial No. 532,232.
Mounted on the stock 10, for a rotative movement, adjacent the inner ends of the pawls 17 and 18 is a sleeve 20 which is provided with a laterally extending lug 21 adapted to alternately engage the inner ends of the pawls 17 and 18 said sleeve is rotated, whereby the outer end of eit-her pawl may be held out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel.
Betachably mounted in the squared bore 15, of the ratchet wheel, is a work engaging socket 21 also provided with a squared bore 22 and with diametrically opposite, corresponding' longitudinal grooves 23 and 21. Mounted in the groove 23 and projecting beyond one end of the socket is a leaf spring provided with a laterally projecting lug 2G, while a corresponding leaf spring 27, provided with a laterally projecting lug 28 mounted in the groove 241. rfhe lugs 26 and 28 are so disposed that when the socket 21 is inserted in the bore 15 said lugs will enter the groove 1G under the influence of the expansive force of the leaf springs 25 and 27 and thus lock the socket on the ratchet wheel. 1n order to detach the socket it will only be necessary to grip the projecting ends of the springs 25 and 27 with the lingers and press same toward each other so as to draw the lugsV 2G and 28 out of the groove 1G when the socket can easily be withdrawn from the ratchet wheel.
If desired the handle of the wrench may be constructed of two longitudinal sections 30 and 31 which have their corresponding ends reduced at adjacent faces to form the parallel spaced arms 32 and 33 between which may be mounted the ratchet wheel of the wrench and other necessary elements. This form of handle is clearly illustrated in Fig. 7.
vVhat is claimed isz- A ratchet wrench comprising a stock, spaced arms extending from one ond of said stock, a ratchet wheel journaled between said arms having a transverse bore therethrough the wall of which is provided with a continuous groove extending transversely of said bore, a work engaging socket adapted to be detachably inserted in t-he bore of the ratchet wheel and comprising a tubular member correspon ding in cross section to the bore of the ratchet wheel and having oppositely disposed longitudinal grooves in the outer face thereof, a normally expanded respect to the stock when said stock is oscilleaf spring mounted in each of said grooves lated n one direction. 10 projecting beyond one end of said member, a In testimony whereof, I ax my signalug in each of said springs adapted to enter ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
