WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19,1915.
Applicationfiled May 25, 1914. Serial No. 840,901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. HANNsz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hondo, in the county of Medina, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel and efficient wrench adapted for various uses, but especially adapted for removing and applying vehicle axle nuts.
' Another object is to provide a wrench of this character which will retain its grip on the nut so that danger of slipping is eliminated.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. 7
In the drawings: higure 1 is an elevation of a wrench made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the wrench and a nut to which the wrench is applied. Fig. A is an end elevation of the wrench.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, there is shown an elongated bar which has a central enlarged portion, 10 and the narrow handle portion 11 extending longitudinally from the opposite ends thereof. Formed centrally on one of the larger faces of the portion 10 is an outwardly extending inclosing wall 12 which forms the nut receiving socket 13. In two of the opposite sides of the wall 12 are formed openings 14C in which are arranged the pins 15 carried by the weighted members 16, which members are disposed outwardly of the wall. Adjacent the apertured wall, and through the enlarged portion 10 are formed elongated openings 17 in which are mounted brackets 18 carrying thereon thecentrally pivoted levers 19. One end of each of the levers is pivotally connected with one of the members 16, as clearly shown. The other ends of the levers are disposed on the other side of the portion 10 and are directed inwardly toward each other as at 20 and then away from the member 10 in parallel relation toform the finger pieces 21. Connected to each of the levers 19 adjacent its point of juncture with the portion 20, is a spring 22, the other end of which is secured to a lug 23 on the face of the member 10.
The nut 24. is provided with openings or sockets 25 which receive the pins 15 when the nut is engaged in the socket 13. p
To apply the wrench to the nut, the finger pieces 21 are pressed together so as to withdraw the pins 15 from within the openings 14. The nut will thenreadily slip intov the socket 13, and upon release of the finger pieces, the pins will enter the openings in the nut. The wrench is then firmly held on the nut and the rotation of the-wrench to screw or unscrew the nut readily accomplished without danger of the slipping of the wrench from the nut.
What is claimed is:
A wrench comprising an elongated bar having a central enlarged portion provided with a receiving socket formed on one face of the enlargement and extending therefrom, the opposite walls of the socket member having openings, the enlargement having openings at opposite sides of the socket member, levers disposed through the openings of the enlargement and centrally pivoted therein, pins carried by the levers and engaged through the openings of the socket member, handle members on the other end of the levers and disposed at the other side of the enlargement and springs connected to the handles and to the enlargement for rocking the levers on their pivots and holding the pins engaged through the openings of the socket member.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signa- Witnesses:
'JACOBH. MnYnRs,
J. W. CRow.
