Description

JOHN Il. GOES, OF IVOROESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE OOES NVRENOII COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,956, dated December 12, 1.899.
Application iiled .Tuly 7, 1899. Serial No. 723,022. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN H. CoEs,of Worcester, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Virenches, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and gures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the `production of a novel wrench, my improvements relating more especially to the handle end of the wrench and giving to the wrench great firmness and durability. v
In accordance with my invention the shank of the fixed jaw of the wrench is embraced by a collar which sustains the usual screw for operating the movable jaw, and said collar is provided with one or more legs which are extended along the narrower edges of the shank to substantiall y its extremity, where said legs are held closed by a suitable cap or iinishing washer or plate, one or both of said legs being locked to the shank by an expanded key carried by the leg and entering a notch or opening of the handle, or vice versa.
Figure l, in side elevation, with one of the handle-shells removed, represents a wrench embodying my present invention in the best form now known to me. Fig. 2 shows part of the shank of the wrench, with the collar and legs in position preparatory to expanding the key. Fig. 3 shows a like View with the key expanded aud part of a shell on the hand part of the shank. Fig. 4t is a section through the handle and its shells. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the shank, with the collar, legs, and cap or finishing-washer, looking at Fig. 2 from the left; and Fig. 6 shows a modification.
The fixed jaw a has a shank a', provided at one edge with the usual recess 0.2, in which may enter the usual nut l) of the screw b', and two shoulders b', accurately placed with relation to the face 2 of the fixed jaw to determine the position of thetop 3 of the collar c, which constitutes a seat for said screw, it entering a threaded part in and actuating the movable jaw cl.
The parts so far referred to, with the exception of the collar c, are and may be as usual in wrenches of the kind herein shown, and the shank mayhave a bolt-hole a4 to receive a bolt 6, which is extended through suitable shells or plates 7 8, constituting part of the Vexterior of the handle.
In accordance with my present invention I provide the shank a with one or more locking-notches e, which are entered by one or more keys e, carried by one or more of the like legs c2, extended from the collar. The extremities of these legs are notched, as at 6o l0, to leave prongs which enter the recessed inner side of the cap or finishing-washer g, having a central hole, which is iitted over a tang a6, which is upset within the hole in the cap to confine the cap lirmly and immovably to the shank, said cap keeping the inner sides f of the legs c2 against the edges of the shank. The legs and keys e' are composed of metal, and the keys may be struck by a hammer or drop and be expanded. The keys are somewhat smaller in area than the notches c. The collar and legs are slipped over the shank from its end after having applied the loose jaw, provided with the screw, onto the shank, and the upper end of the collar is abutted against the shoulders or positioning devices b2, and in this presentation the lower end of the key is in a position to pass the V-shaped shoulder l2 of the locking-notch e, and the said key (one or more) is made to enter said notches. This done the keys e' are subjected to pressure and are expanded to Iill the notch or notches, as in Figs. l and 3, iirmlylocking the leg or legs to the shank of the wrench, the joint being such as to iirinly and immovably seat the top 3 of the collar against the shoulder b2. After this the cap g may be applied and xed in position on the shank.
It Will be obvious that my invention would not be departed from by providing the legs with locking-notches, as shown in Fig. 6., letting the keys, as e4, be carried by the shank.
The legs at their junction with the lower edge of the collar are recessed, as .at 15, to leave lips 16, the recesses receiving the lips acting against the edges of the shells 7 and 8 near their upper ends, lips 17 18 of the shells entering recesses in the collar and cap, respectively.
The outer edges of the legs c2 finish flush roo with the edges of the shells and complete the exterior of the hand hold or part of the wrench.
In this invention the key will be fixed to either a leg or to the shank.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A Wrench having a shank surrounded by' a Collar having legs extended therefrom downwardly along opposed parts of the shank, said collar and legs being Confined to the shank by an expanded key fitting closely a notch, the key and notch being interposed between a leg and the shank, substantially as described.
2. A wrench having a shank provided with Collar arresting and positioning shoulders, and a notch e, a collar surrounding said shank and provided with legs, one of said legs having a connected key expanded to fill closely JOHN H. OOEs.
