T o all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. LIN'rLE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harlan, in the county of Shelby and State of-Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgeons 0perating-Pans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved surgeons operating pan, and has for its ol ject the provision of an article of this class comprising parts which will be effective in use for the purposes designed, will be comparatively inexpensive in manufacture, which may be conveniently sterilized, and will include foldable features so that it may occupy small space in a physicians case.

With these and other objects in View the` invention consists of the novel. combination and arrangement of parts as described herein, pointed out by the appended claims, and as illustrated in the drawing, it being understood that changes in form, size, proportion and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, numeral 1 indicates a supporting frame, comprising a pair of front links 2 having a hinged connection at 3, and the pair of terminal or rear links 4 having the hinged connection 5 with the front links, said front links 2 being curved outwardly and longitudinally near their front, hinged terminals, as indicated at G.

The links may be constructed of any suitable material; they are rectangular in cross section, and upon their outer sides are secured studs S for seating thereon of caps or snap-buttons 9 hereafter mentioned, links 4 having terminal studs 10.

At 11 is indicated a cushion or back-rest having button-Shanks or studs 12 secured upon the lower part of its outer side, and provided with buttons 13 upon its ends Specification of Letters Patent.

which may be secured upon studs l0. In constructing cushion 11 it may have any desired filler; it, preferably, has a cover of rub ber so that it may be effectively sterilized, and has a length sufficient to span the distance between the free ends of links 4 when said links are placed parallel, the terminals of the cushion, when secured, preferably being disposed upon the outer sides of these links, as shown in Fig. 2.

When the cushion has been secured as described, a supporting frame is provided having upright walls equal to the width of the links, it being understood that the device when used is disposed horizontally or in the same manner as a bed pan; links 4 at this time will be substantially parallel, and links 2 will extend convergently from hinges 5 to hinge 3, cushion 11 being disposed at substantially a right angle to links 4; and when in use the parts mentioned are disposed in the positions described and as plainly shown in Fig. 2.

1 provide a tent or cover 14, preferably of rubber and having a shape, preferably, corresponding to the form of the frame last mentioned, and provided with snap-buttons 9 near its edges to register with studs 8, and having buttons 15 to register with studs 12. The cover has an adequate size so that when it is secured upon t-he links and cushion, it will provide a depressed containing space or basin 1G, the device as described providing the surgeons opeiating pan.

The device is especially useful for obstetrical purposes. The elongated cushion has a length greater than the crosswise measurement of the back or hips of the pen son operated upon, and preferably has a diameter greater than the width of the links employed, and when it is compressed by the weight of aperson resting thereon it will still have a diameter sufficient to provide a supporting wall for the provision of a containing space or basin 1G, mentioned.

The device may be conveniently folded to occupy a limited space as shown in Fig. 1, and on account of the curved ends 6, a rectangular containing space 17 may be formed between links 2, wherein the cushion and cover may be deposited, links 4 being folded and disposed at the sides and outwardly of links 2. This feature will be especially appreciated by surgeons or physicians since they usually have a variety of articles to carry. The links may be and preferably are constructed of aluminum plates, and all of the parts may be conveniently sterilized.

It will be understood that when the links are extended for use, and the cushion is secured thereon, these parts are to be entirely overhung by the cover, and when the edges of the cover are secured to the outer sides of the links and cushion, the device is then complete and ready for use. On account of the shape of the device it cannot be overturned since the weight of the body rests upon the cushion, and on account of their hinged connection the links will remain upright, as supporting walls for the cover.

It will be noted that the device would be operative without the use of buttons or fastening devices 8 and 9, since the tent or cover 14 rests upon and overhangs the links and cushion.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-

l. A device for the urpose described, comprising a plurality of horizontal hingeably connected supporting members, a flexible sheet having a part of its area seated upon and upwardly of the supporting members and having a depressed part disposed intermediate the connected supporting` members.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of an elongated cushion, a pair of links each having an end secured upon an end of the cushion, their opposite ends having a hingeable connection; a cover seated upon and overhanging said cushion and links and providing a depressed area intermediate said cushion and said hingeably connected links.

3. In combination, a device of the class described; apair of terminal links; intermediate links hingeably connected at one of their ends, their opposite ends being hingeably connected to an end of the terminal links; an elongated cushion removably secured upon the opposite ends of said terminal links; and a cover removably secured upon and disposed to overhang said links and cushion, said cover providing a depressed part between said cushion and said links.

In combination, an article for the purpose described; a pair of terminal links; a pair of intermediate links hingeably connected at one of their ends, their opposite ends being hingeably connected to an end of the terminal links; an elongated cushion having its ends removably secured upon the opposite ends of the terminal links and providing a containing space intermediate said links and said cushion; a flexible, impervious sheet removably secured upon said links and cushion, said sheet being disposed to overhang said links and cushion and having a depressed part seated within said containing space.

5. A device for the purpose described, comprising a pair of terminal links, a pair of outwardly curved links pivotally connected at one of their ends, their opposite ends being pivotally connected to an end of one of said terminal links, said terminal links and outwardly curved links having fastening devices thereon; a cushion adapted to have a seating between and to have a removable mounting upon the free ends of said terminal links; a flexible, impervious sheet provided with fastening devices and adapted to have a seating upon and with a depressed surface-portion disposed intermediate said cushion and said links, the fastening devices of saidV sheet adapted to register with the fastening devices of said links.

6. In combination, a device for the purpose described, comprising an elongated cushion; a first pair of links; a second pair of links; said first pair of links being oppositely disposed and each having an end removably secured to an end of the cushion; said second pair of links being outwardly curved and pivotally connected at one of their ends, their opposite ends being pivotally connected with said first pair of links; a flexible, impervious sheet adapted to have a seating upon and having a depressed body-portion disposed between said cushion and said links.
