Description
FRANK S. CHAPPELL, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUNDLE OR. PACKAGE TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1910.
Application filed. December 10, 1909. Serial No. 532,484.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. GHAPPELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bundle or Package Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in package ties or fasteners and has for its object to provide a fastener by which packages of all kinds may be readily tied or bound up and also untied without injury to the device whereby it may be used over again on other packages.
The invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangementand combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the appended claims.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing my invention as applied to a package in wrapping or secluring position. Fig. 2 is a sectional detai Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral 1 represents a plate preferably of sheet metal having an elongated eye 1 to which is secured one end of a fastening tape 2, as indicated at W. To the opposite edge of the plate 1, is pivotally secured a substantially S shaped member 8 having its pivotal connection preferably ef fected by turning over integral tongues 1 of the plate around the central bar 3 of the member 3. A portion of the plate between the tongues 1 is bent up and serrated to form backwardly turned teeth as indicated at 1. The portions or bars 3*, 3, of the S shaped member are parallel with the central portion and with each other as shown. This provides two open loops with their openings oppositely disposed. In fastening or tying apackage the plate is placed upon the top of the package and the tape passed around the package and inserted first through the open end of one loop and then through the open end of the opposite loop and then drawn tight around the package when the two portions 3 and 3 cause the tape to be held in engagement with the teeth or prongs, thus securing the package.
The openings of the loops in opposite directions prevents any accidental disengagement of the tape, but it may be easily removed by pulling the tape fromunder one bar whereafter it may be easily disengaged from the teeth and then from the other bar.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A package or bundle fastener comprising a plate having a suitable flexible tape secured at one edge thereof, and a substan tially S shaped member having its central bar or portion pivotally connected to the opposite edge of the plate the outer and central bars or portions of the said member lying in the same plane substantially as described.
2. A package or bundle fastener comprising a plate having a suitable flexible tape secured at one edge thereof, and a substantially S shaped member having its central bar or portion pivotally connected to the op posite edge of the plate, the outer and central bars or portions of the said member lying in the same plane said plate having gripping teeth in proximity to the point of pivotal support of the S shaped member to grip a tape passed beneath the outer arms of the S-shaped member.
3. A package tie comprising a plate having a flexible tape secured to one edge thereof, a substantially S shaped member having three parallel bars lying in the same plane, integral tongues at the ends of one edge of the plate encircling the central bar and integral teeth or projections from the edge of the plate between said tongues to grip a tape passed beneath the outer arms of the S- shaped member.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK S. GHAPPELL.
