WALTER Gr. POTTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PROOF-PRESS. t
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May M), titt.
Application filed. June 17, 1909. Serial No. 502,780.
To all who/m 'ii 'may concern:
T g Be it. known that l, il .i1/rim (l. Porrnn, a
citizen of the United ttates, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and :State of illinoisy have invented certain new and useful linprorenients in Proof-Presses, ot' which the follo\\fing is a speeitication.
The object of this invention is to produce a prooiI press of simple construction which may be conveniently and rapidly operated.
ln the aeeomlninying drawings, Figure l is a Side elevation ol a proof press embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmental longitudinali vertical central section through the machine. taken upon the plane ot' dotted line B 25 or' Fig. i. lfig. Je is a transverse vertical seetion through the n1achine. Fig. 5 is a fraginental View of a paper stop.
'l'he vframe l may he of any suitable construction. it is herein shown as eomprisimg a table 2. legs I. and braces -l-. Extending longitudinall)v o't' the table 2 are tracksv or rails 5 upon whleh 1s slidably mounted a t'orm hed t3. Ait the ends oi' the form bed are lianges T, either or both ol whieh may be removable for (antrenienee in placing upon the form hed the matter from which an impression is to he talten. rl`wo .side Hannes or rails t5 extend lonejilinlinally ol` the hed and projeet some distance beyond one. end oi' the latter. lligidly attached to the outer sides oi" the. railsl H are rack liars' il.
'lwo ybraeltets l() are 'rigidly lixed to opposit@ sides: ol the table 2 and hare bearingsy ll at. their upper ends to reeeive. eeeentrie hearingr bloelis l2. ln .said bearing)y blocks is rotatably supported a. shaft. 12E on which is rigidly fixed an impression cylinder l-i haring` ygear rings if lixed uponils endsl in position to mesh with the racks Sl. An openingq lo tliaig. 3) 1s formed in'thenpcriplnry of the eyhnder lll. .i packmfb li' of paper or other Isuitable material is seenred upon the periphery ol the cylinder lll by menus of elamping,A plates 1S and lt) and serews 2t).
'.lhe ehnnpinpl plate i9 may hare projections- 21 thereon, as shown in Fig. 5, to Jform stops for one end of the sheet. of paper. lin order to clamp said end of the paper, l provide a rot-k shaft extending longitudinally of the cylinder within the opening 16, said shaft carrying` a number ofpspring fingers 23 extending into position to clam the paper between their .outer ends an the periphery of the roller adjacent to the clamping plate lt). Upon one end of the shaft. 22 is lixed an operating arm 24. A. spring, 25 attached at one end to the free end of said arm and at its other end to the side of the cylinder ,il tends to roel( the shaft 22 to clamp the paper. l
A eranh 2U tixed to one end of the shaft. 1?v provides means for rotating the impresj don cylinder t-,t and reciprocating;` the form To .the eccentric bearing blocks 12 are tixed arms 2?, the outer ends of which are connected by means of links 28 with arms 29 fixed upon a rook shaft 30. Stops 3l sup-- ported upon the braces d limit the downward movement ol' the eeeentric-operating yarms 2T. A treadle 32 lixed. to the rock shaft 3() provides means for rocking the arms 2? and the eccentric bearing blocks 'l2 to raise the cylinder lul out. oli position to Contact with a form placed upon the bed G, but'J not far enough to disengag'e the gears l5 from tl' racks t). Suitable. means, such. as a sprint 33. 'is provided for holding the cylinder la in its lowered position during the taking of an impression. Cooperating stops 3l and 35 upon the cylinder lt and one of the brackets It), respeetively, limit the rotary movement ot the cylinder and the reciproeatory movement of he forni bed in either direction.
Siti is a har entendit@ from one of the braelietsl lo to the other and serving, to hold up the end oi' the paper so that said end shall not drop onto the form and. cause a slur.
When a prooi" is to be taken, the crank 26 is rotated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. l until the stop '34 engages the stop 35, when the form bed will be at the righlliand limit` of its movement and the paper clamp willbe. at the right-hand side of the cylinder il; One end of a sheet of paper is then plat-ed in the clamp, with the sheet. lying across the top oiI the. cylinder. The crank.
2O is'then rotated in the reverse direct-ion, rotating the impression cylinder, moving the. form bed to the left, and drawing the sheet of paper between the cylinder and the form on the bed. W hen the sheet has passed between the cylinder and the forni it may be removed by opening the paper clamp. The operator then raises the oy inder by-means ot' the treadle 32 and returns the cylinder and the form bed to die starting position by rotating ,the crank 26.
The paper clamp is opened by raising theA arm 24.
The matter from which an impression is to be taken may be secured upon the bed 6 in any common or preferred Way, or may be left loose thereon.
I claim as my invention:
In a proof press, in combination, a I table; a form bed slidable on said table; a bracket secured to each side of said table; i bearing blocks rotatably mounted in said brackets; an impression cylinder having its journals eceentrically mounted in said bearinf blocks; a driving connection between said cylinder and said form bed;stop means on one of said brackets; means on said cylinder arranged to engage said stop means to limit j the rotation of the cylinder and the movement of the form bed; an arm fixed on each I of said bearing blocks, said arms being arranged to rotate said blocksto move said impression cylinder toward and away from the form bed; means tending to hold said `arms in position to hold the limpression cylvinder on the form bed;
and means-for moving said arms in the opposite direction.
2. In a proof press', in combination, a table; va form bed slidable on said table and having a rack bar secured thereto; a bracket I secured to each side of said form bed and having bearing openings therein; bearing blocks rotatably mounted 1n said openings;
the sliding movement o'f'l the form bed; an A arm fixed to each of said bearing blocks, said arms being arranged lo rotate said blocks to move said in'ipression cylinder away from the form bed; a rock shaft mounted in said table; arms connecting the 'free ends of said arms with the first mentioned arms; a treadle fixed on said rock shaft for moving said arms in the direction to raise said impression cylinder olf the form bed; and a sprmg engaging one of said arms and tending to hold it in'position to keep said cylinder in contact with the form bed.
