To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ARTHUR M. DAVIS.
and BURT F. DAVIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mold-Forming Machines; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en-- able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in mold forming machines.
One object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character having an improved construction and arrangement of adjustable pattern plate supporting and operating devices.
Another object is to provide an improved construction and arrangement of adjustable pressing mechanism and means whereby the same is actuated to pack the sand into the mold flask and around the pattern.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of our improved mold forming machine; Fig. 2 is a side View of the same with parts broken away and in section; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a vertical cross sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on a large scale taken through the pattern plate, one of the mold flasks and the adjacent parts, showing the construction and arrangement of the ramming board or sand packing mechanism; Fig. 6 is a similar view of the pattern plate and mold flask showing the manner in which the pattern plate and pattern are lowered from the flask and sand mold; Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the same; Fig. 8 is an enlarged view of one of the sand packing or ramming blocks showing the manner in which the pressure of its operating spring is adjusted.
In the embodiment of the invention we provide a supporting frame 1 which is preferably provided with rollers 2 whereby the same may be readily moved from place to place. The frame 1 comprises end members 3 which are connected together near their lower ends by longitudinally slotted cylin- Specification of Letters Patent.

der supporting bars 4 and at their upper ends by a stripping plate 5. The stripping plate 5 is provided with apertures corresponding to the shape of the pattern and through which the pattern is projected and retracted in forming the mold as will be hereinafter more fully described. Supported on the slotted bars 4 of the frame are vertically and laterally adjustable cylinder supporting plates 6 having on their opposite corners pairs of lugs having depending supporting and adjusting screws 7 which project through the slots of the bars 4. and have arranged thereon above and below said bars adjusting and fastening nuts 8. By means of the nuts 8 the plates 6 may be raised or lowered to the desired vertical adjus'tn'ient and the plates may also be adjusted laterally in either direction and fastened by the nuts in their adjusted position.
Secured to the plates 6 are vertically disposed cylinders 9 in which are slidably mounted pattern plate supporting and operating pistons 10 with the upper endsof which are engaged pattern supporting plates 11. Revolubly mounted in suitable bearings 12 formed on the lower side of the cylinder supporting plates 6 are piston operating shafts 13 on which and in line with the cen ter of the piston are formed cams or eccentrics 14 with which are engaged sleeves formed on the lower ends of piston rods 15 which project up into the pistons and are pivotally connected thereto by pivot pins 16 as shown. On one end of the shaft 13 are fixedly mounted crank handles 17 whereby the shafts and the eccentrics thereon are turned to project or retract the pistons thereby raising or lowering the pattern plates and patterns of the mold. On the opposite ends of the shafts 13 from the crank handles 17 are adj ustably secured stop members 18, said members being preferably in the form of short crank arms having on their inner ends sleeves which are engaged with the ends of the shaft and may be fastened in adjusted positions thereon by set screws 18 or other suitable fastening devices whereby the operation of the shaft by the crank handles 17 will be limited and the projection of the pistons and raising of the pattern plates and patterns thus controlled or regulated.

the sand in the mold flasks and around the pattern when the latter has been brought to the proper position for forming the mold. The pressing mechanism consists of guide casings 19 which are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the opposite ends of the frame 3 of the machine and have arranged or formed integral therewith on one edge thereof vertically disposed rack bars 20. Slidably mounted in the opposite edges of the casings 19 are adjustable rack bars 21 on the offset upper ends of which are arranged upwardly projecting presser bar supporting screws or threaded shafts 22 with which are adjustably engaged the ends of a presser bar 23, said bar having on its ends spaced parallel lugs 24 provided with alined apertures through which the screws pass loosely. On the screws 22 above and below the lugs 2a are adjusting nuts 25 by means of which the bar 23 is adjusted to the proper position for operating the ramming board or packing mechanism hereinafter described. Arranged in the casing 19 between and in operative engagement with the rack bars are presser bar operating pinions 26 to which are fixedly connected the inner ends of operating handles or levers 27 whereby the pinions may be turned in the casings 19 thus projecting and retracting the pressing mechanism. By providing the fixed racks 20 and connecting the slidable racks 21 therewith through the loose pinions 26 the adjustment or movement of the racks 21 will be multiplied by the rotary movement and vertical travel of the pinions when operated by the levers 27 thus providing for the quick operation of the pressing mechanism.
The ramming board or sand packing mechanism with which the presser bar 23 is operatively engaged comprises a frame or casing 28 open on its under side and having disposed therein a series of closely arranged packing or ramming blocks 29 which may be of any suitable shape and which are herein shown as being rectangular. Each of the blocks 29 is provided with an upwardly projecting stem 30 which projects through and is slidably mounted in the upper side of the frame or casing 28 and is provided in its upper end with a transversely disposed stop pin 31 which prevents the disengagement of the stem from the frame. The lower ends of the stems are reduced and secured in the lower ends of the block 29 and said stems are preferably threaded as shown. On the threaded portions of the stems 30 are nuts 32 between which and the inner surface of the top of the frame 28 are arranged coiled springs 33 through the medium of which a yielding pressure is applied to the blocks when the frame 28 is depressed by the presser bar of the pressing mechanism hereinbefore described. By adjusting the nuts 32 the pressure of the frame 28 against the blocks 29 may be regulated and the sand thus packed more or less firmly around the pattern.
In the operation of the machine the mold flasks 34: which may be of the usual or any suitable form -are placed in position over the opening in the stripping plate 5 and the forms which may be of any desired construction are placed in position and seoured to the pattern plates 11. The pistons are now operated in the manner described to raise the pattern plates and patterns up through the stripping plate thus projecting the patterns up into the flasks of the mold as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. After the patterns have thus been arranged the flasks 34; are filled in around the pattern with sand, after which the ramming board or pressing mechanism 28 is placed in the flasks and on the sand. The pressing mechanism is now operated to engage the pressing head 23 with the frame 28 of the ramming board whereby the latter is depressed and the blocks 29 therein thus forced downwardly through the 1nedium of the springs 33 thereby tightly packing the sand around and over the pattern. By constructing and arranging the blocks 29 and operating the same in the manner described the sand will be uniformly packed over the uneven or irregular surface of the pattern. After the sand has thus been properly packed the piston operating devices are reversed and the piston and pattern supporting plates together with the patterns thereon thus lowered through the stripping plate and out of engagement with the sand mold as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
By means of a machine constructed as herein shown and described it will be readily seen that various shapes of pipe fittings and other hollow castings may be quickly and accurately formed.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention claimed.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is:
1. A mold forming machine comprising a main supporting frame, a pattern supporting plate, means to raise and lower said plate, patterns on the plate, mold flasks around said patterns, ramming boards adapted to be engaged with said flasks, each comprising a frame open at its lower side,
a series of packing blocks operat-ively arranged in said frame, stems on said blocks and projecting through the upper side of the frame, block operating springs arranged on said stems, spring adjusting nuts arranged on the stems whereby the pressure of said springs is regulated, and a pressing mechanism engaging said frames whereby the latter are actuated to depress said packing blocks.
2. In a mold forming machine, the combination with a supporting frame, a pattern supporting plate therein, means to raise and lower said plate, the patterns, and the mold flasks; of a ramming board comprising a frame, a plurality of packing blocks slidably mounted in said frame, springs arranged between said blocks and frame whereby the pressure of the latter is yieldingly imparted to said blocks, a pressing mechanism comprising casings pivotally connected to the ends of said main frame, fixed rack bars in said casings, adjustable rack bars having a sliding engagement with the casings, pinions between and having an operative engagement with said rack bars, operating handles on said pinions, and presser bars having an adjustable connection with said rack bars and adapted to be brought into engagement with the frame of said ramming board, for the purpose set forth.
3. A mold forming machine comprising a main supporting frame, supporting wheels arranged thereon, a stripping plate forming the upper end of said frame, a pattern supporting plate, means to raise and lower said plate in the frame, patterns arranged on said plate, mold flasks arranged around said patterns and adapted to receive the sand for forming the mold, ramming boards adapted to be engaged with said flasks, said boards comprising a boX or frame opened on its lower side, a series of packing blocks operatively arranged in said frame, stems arranged on said blocks and projecting through the upper side of the frame, block operating springs arranged on said stems, spring adjusting nuts arranged on the stems whereby the pressure of said springs is Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents regulated, a pressing mechanism comprising vertically movable presser bar supporting and operating members, a presser bar adjustably secured to said members, and means whereby said members are raised and lowered thus bringing said presser bar into and out of engagement with the frame of said ramming board whereby the latter is actuated to depress said packing blocks.

A mold forming machine comprising a supporting frame, a pattern supporting plate arranged therein, means to raise and lower said plate, patterns adapted to be engaged with said plate, mold flasks arranged around said patterns, a ramming board com prising a frame, a plurality of packing blocks slidably mounted in said frame, springs arranged between said blocks and frame whereby the pressure of the latter is yieldingly imparted to said blocks, a pressing mechanism comprising casings pivotally connected to the ends of said main frame, fixed rack bars arranged in said casings, adjustable rack bars having a sliding engagement with the casings, pinions arranged between and having an operative engagement with said rack bars, operating handles formed on said pinions whereby when the latter are turned and will be caused to travel up and down said stationary racks and to thus multiply the movement of the adjustable racks, bar supporting screws arranged on the upper ends of said adjustable racks, presser bars having an adjustable connection with said screws and adapted to be raised and lowered by the movement of said adjustable rack bars to bring said presser bar into and out of engagement with the frame of the ramming board whereby the latter is actuated to depress the blocks therein.
