ADDRESS-PRINTING ATTACHMENT.
' Application filed January 10,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1, 1907.
1906. Serial No. 295.379.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Blooming Prairie, inthe county of Steele and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Address Printing Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a device for attachment to a printing-press of any construction for the purpose of printin adl dresses on papers or circulars as the Iatter are issued from the press.
The principal object of provide a simple BUoxsEN the invention is to and convenient mechanism for this purpose which shall be universal in its application and which will do away with the difliculties that are now met with in addressing periodicals, circulars, and the like.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which simi ar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. A
Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a printing-press, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a drum and connections constituting part of the invention. Fig. 4 is a plan of a carrier for the address-printing type. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the holders for the type and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
On the drum a or other movable portion of a press I locate a tappet I), which may be in many forms, but which I have shown in the form of a pinion. At each rotation of the drum or at each movement of the portion of the press to which this tappet is applied it is intended to engage a toothed wheel c and rotate it one step. Consequently the rotation of this wheel is proportionate to the amount of operation of the press and to the number of articles printed. The wheel c is mounted on a shaft d, which carries a drum e. This drum is preferably polygonal in form, so that it will serve to cause the intermittent travel of a carrier, which is in the form of an endless chain. This carrier is composed of a series of links f, each carrying a box f', provided with a cavity f 2 for receiving a slug or type g for printing the address. The links by rods f3, so that the endless chain is readily set up and completed by the plurality of links and boxes connected in this manner. The types or slugs can be introduced and changed at will to provide for any alterations that may be made in the mailing-list.
I have shown the shaft d as mounted in bearings in a frame h, carried by a projection 7c' of the frame of the press. The frame is rovided with grooves 7c', forming a track or receiving projections f 4 on theends of the chain-links and guiding them. On the projection le are other frames l, which support shafts m, carrying ilanged drums n n', over which the endless chain passes. Supported by the projection k also are a pair of inclined ways o and p, along which the endless chain moves during the operation. On the inclined plate o is mounted an inking apparatus q, and on the plate p is mounted a cleaning-pad r, the same being connected with a tank s or the like for receiving the gasolene or similar cleaning substance, which passes readily down to the pad r, composed, preferably, of felt.
Between the drums n fn the chain passes over a series of flanged wheels t, which can be as numerous as may be desired in order to permit the chain to pass back and forth and provide for any amount of circulation. As the mailing-list changes the number of these wheels will be changed. They are mounted on a frame u.
While I have illustrated a particular form of links constituting the carrier for the types, it will be understood that for these may be substituted ordinary name-plates having means for connecting them together in an endless chain, a series of erforated stencils similarly connected, or, in act, any other kind of printing devices.
The operation is very simple. As has been said, for each operation of the press the wheel cis rotated one step, and the parts are so designed that this provides for printing one name and moving the next type into a position where it can perform the printing operation the next time the drum rotates. The ink is applied to' the type in a convenient place, and they are cleaned on the felt pad r in an obvious and effective manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination with a printing-press, having a rotatable cylinder and a tappet rotatable with the cylinder, of a toothed wheel located in position to be moved by IOO TIO
said tappet, a carrier for supporting a printing device, and means for connecting the Wheel with the carrier.
2. The combination in a printing-press, of a printing attachment comprising a frame provided with grooves on the inner faces of the sides thereof7 an endless carrier supported'in the frame and comprising a plurality of connected rectangular links for receiving a form and arranged with their long dimensions transversely of the carrier, lugs on the ends of the links for engaging the grooves of the' frame whereby to guide the carrier, and means whereby the press may intermittently move the carrier.
3. The combination with a printing-press, of a printing attachment comprising a frame having grooves on the inner faces of the sides thereof, drums journaled in the frame, an endless carrier supported on the drums, and comprising a. plurality of connected rectangular links for carrying a form having their long dimensions arranged transversely of the ported in the frame, lugs on the ends of the links for engaging the grooves of the frame whereby to guide the carrier, and a connection between the press and one of the drums whereby to intermittently move the carrier.
4Q The combination with a printing-press, of a printingl attachment comprising' a frame provided with grooves in the inner faces of the sides thereof, an endless carrier suprame and comprising a plurality of connected links for supporting forms, lugs on the ends of the links for engaging the grooves of the frame whereby to guide the carrier, and means whereby the press may intermittently move the carrier.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 4o two subscribing witnesses.4
WALTER L. BUCKSEN.
