SHOLL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COLLAPSIBLE DRINKING-CUP.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 1, 1399. Serial No. 530,892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be" known that I, Max SHOLL, a citizen of the .United States, residing at Chicago,. county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Drinking- Cups, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to drinking cups and structed as to adapt the-same to be collapsed or foldedinto a small compass for The object of my invention is the pro vision of a drinking cup of the character mentioned which can be folded so as to adapt the same for carriage in the pocket or an ordinary hand urse, which will be effectual in use, and 0 strong, durable and Other objects will appear hereinafter.
terized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the M invention will be more readily understoo byreference to the accompanying drawings/forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view partially in section of my improved drinking cup showortion are preferably two flexible members 2, the same being formed preferably of a chemically pure suitable waterproof paraflin or oiled paper. Interposedcentrally between said members 2 is ric 3 of dimensions considerably. less than those of the members 2. The bmpheral.
'edge portions of. said members 2 and 3 are bent upwardly and crimped to form the lateral substantially perpendicular, preferably slightly flaring, walls 4 of the cup. In-
Patented May 10, 1910.; I
closing the body 1, the same being secured as by stitching to the upper edge thereof is an outer tubular casing 5- of a foldable nature and possessing morerigidity and firmness than the members 2 and 3. .In the formation of the body l a templet 6 of a frusto-conical shape is preferably employed. With such employ ment, the members2 and 3 relatively arranged as before stated, are placed centrally upon the upper extremity of said templet. The peripheral edge portions of said mem-- bers are then bent downwardly, as shownih Fig. 7, and crimped, this bein readily effected by the fingers, at
pre erably. four points designdted as 7, as c early shown in Fig. 5, into conformity with the contourof said templet. This being done the tubular-f casing 5 is slipped over said templet and members 2 and 3, whereupon the latter and the former, up being removed from the templet, may he s ve to ether as before stated. The upper edges of the members 2, in this arrangement it will be found, project in a ragged manner above the upper edge of the casing 5. By means of a pair of scissors or a like vtool these edges may evidently be I readily trimmed to register with said edge of said casing, as illustrated in the drawings. Said casing as seen preferably rojects below the lower extremity of t e body '1' whereby the bottom of the latter is protected against injury or puncture.
Vitn the provision of a cup of such con-I struction, the same by first upwardly indenting the bottom of the body 1 as shown in F igl .3, may be readily lapsed to a position as shown in Fi 2, in
which position the same ma: he rea ilym serted into the pocketor any other suitable place for carriage. By forming thebody of the cup of two thicknesses of paper and the bottom thereof with an additional reinforc' ing thickness of fabric, the same will evidently not be readily susceptible to rupture or puncture, because of folding or creasing. rovision of the; I .againstwertical collapsion, also ad itional thereof. Further by the outer casing 5, the cup will e rendere protection for the body 1 will d d thereby provi e While I have shown what I deem to be the longitudinally. c01
preferable form of my device I do not wish to be limited thereto as there mightbe various changes made in the details oi construction and the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention com =rehended within the scope of the appen ed claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A collapsible drinking cup comprising an inner flexible substantiall cylindrical bodysaid body consisting of a bottom, and latera walls formed integral with said bottom, said bottom and lateral walls being formed of two originally flat sheets of flexible waterproof paper and an intermediate sheet of v water-proof fabric interposed between the bottom-forming portions of said paper sheets, the said intermediate sheet being of less size than said other sheets, the per] heral edge portions of said sheets beln crimped to form said lateral walls of sai body; and a longitudinally foldable relatively rigid tubular casing inclosing said body and secured thereto at the upper edge thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAX SHOLL.
