Description

HENRY RAUSCH, OF RROOKLY1\I, NEW YORK.
Letters Pazmt'lvo. 95,724, dated october 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRANT STOP-COGK RODS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same. i
To all whom it may concern.-
,I Be it known that I, HENRY RAUsOH, of Brooklyn,
ifn the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydrant and Stop-Cock Rods; and I do hereby declare ,that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willl enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, 'in whichv Figure 1 is aside `View of my improved hydrantrod, attached to astop-cock valve, part being broken away to show the construction. Y
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line a: x, g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved. hydnant and stop-cock rod, which shall be so constructed and arranged as not to be liable to be detached when removing the key, and at the same time stronger and not so liable t0 vbe eaten away by rust, and broken, as when constructed in the ordinary manner; and
' It consists in the hydrant-rod, constructed in the manner hereinafter more fullydescribed.
A represents the head or socket of thev rod, which is cast with a recess or socket to receive the stem of the stop-cock valve.
The lower edge of the socket or headA is recessed in its middle part to receive the shoulder of the valve, to allow the said valve-stem to enter the socket A so far that spring-keys or vother keys may be passed through holes in the said head, below the cross-head of the valve-stem, as shown in figs.- l and 2, to prevent the said head from being accidentally pulled ol said stem in removing the key, or in any other way.
Upon the middle part of the upper edge of the head A is cast an enlargement, a', through which is formed a square hole to receive the squared lower end of the rod B, which is passed through the vsaid hole, `and the lower end of which is headed down, or riveted in the bottom of Vthe cavity or socket that receives the crosshead of the valve-stem, as shown in g. 2. This .coustruction and manner of attachment enable the .lower part of the rod B to be made heavier and stronger than it can be when the rod is constructed in the ordinary manner.
The upperendof the rod B is squared olf in the ordinary manner, to receive the key.
This con struction electually prevents the accidental detaching of the hydrant-rod from the valve-stem, which is the source of such frequent annoyance when the rods are constructed in the ordinary manner, and which so often necessitates the tearing up of the sidewalk to reach and close the stop-cock, and thus stop the escape and waste of the water.
Having thus described my invention, l
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cast-iron head A, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, that is to say, recessed upon -its lower edge to receive the shoulder of the valve-stem, -and with an enlargement or projection, a',
upon its upper edge to receive the squaredv lower' end of the rod B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 11th day of February, 1869. y
HENRYA BAUSGH.
